Most Anticipated F2P MMOs in 2016: Part 1
Dec 29, 2015 | 1 Votes

2016 is going to be a very good year it seems as plenty of amazing free-to-play games are going to be launched, in spite of the news that Overwatch is going to be pay-once-to-play (Why, Blizzard... why?). Anyhow, from all the games that are reportedly going to be released in 2016, we have compiled a very nice list of the top 10 most anticipated MMOs for you! Let’s check it out!
1. Paladins: Champions of the Realm
At the top part of the list rests this incredible-looking MMO game; a game that combines the exhilaration of shooter games with the randomness of collectible card games - Paladins: Champions of the Realm by Hi-Rez Studios. Somewhat similar to Dirty Bomb, players will head into the battle arena or map with a character of their choice. Of course, the game will be providing a nice range of characters, each with their own unique abilities and skills, for you to choose from.
However, even if you could choose your character, you won’t be able to choose your character’s loadout as the loadout you get depends mainly on which random cards you are given from your deck. Not to mention, you’ll also need to learn how to make the most out of the cards you’ve drawn. Due to this, every match you play in will provide an entirely different experience!
Currently, Paladins: Champions of the Realm is in closed beta, and if everything’s moving along just fine, you should be able to hop in and participate in the game’s open beta testing around early 2016.
2. Blade and Soul
Up next, the runner-up to the title of Most Anticipated MMOs of 2016 goes to this amazing-looking, martial arts-based MMORPG, Blade and Soul. Published by NCSoft, the game will feature an exciting action-based combat system. There will also be plenty of races, which includes the deliberate Gon, the mischevious Lyn, the elegant Yun, and the industrious Jin, for you to choose from, as well as up to 7 unique classes (Blade master, destroyer, summoner, force master, Kung Fu master, assassin, and blade dancer) that you can select. As a rising martial artist, you will be asked to join one of the elite Factions - the Cerulean Order and the Crimson Legion, as well!
From the astonishing graphics and the immersive storyline, Blade and Soul is set to captivate the hearts and minds of MMO players worldwide! Best yet - the game will be officially launched in North America and in Europe on the 19th of January 2016!
3. Black Desert
Snagging the third position on this list is another highly-anticipated MMORPG, Black Desert! This game will be set in an open world where free roaming is not only possible but actually encouraged. Furthermore, the game features a very fast-paced, action-based combat that will definitely get its players’ blood rushing like white water rapids. This is not even the best part of the game!
The most interesting part of Black Desert is its horseback combat. Horses used to be merely a creature of transportation, but in this game, horses will actually participate in combat by stomping their hooves to stagger enemies, or kicking any poor hostile creature that tried to creep up from behind you. You can control how your horse attacks your enemies, in addition to selecting your own character’s skills to use. This amazing blend of 2 separate combat mechanisms will definitely attract players to give Black Desert a try once it is released in early 2016 (tentative release date).
4. Supernova
Our 4th most anticipated MMO for the year 2016 is an awesome-looking sci-fi-themed MOBA game, developed and published by Bandai Namco, called Supernova. Although the game looks and feels a lot like a Starcraft-themed MOBA game, Supernova is set to take the MOBA by storm with its fantastic storyline and setting, as well as its unique feature – minion command!
Yes, you have not heard wrongly – in this game, players will not only be able to play their own hero characters (or Commanders as the game calls them), you’ll be in charge of strategically deploying lane units (a.k.a. creeps) that will advance toward the enemy territory. In some way, the game merges traditional MOBA with a few elements from some of the more modern tower defense games, like CastleStorm. Throw in various technologies (including alien tech), upgrades, and build order, and you’ll end up with this highly strategic MOBA game!
Supernova doesn’t have an official release date as of yet, but the game is currently in closed beta, so I reckon the game will be fully released around the middle of 2016. However, it might be quite awhile before you all will be able to enjoy playing this surely-impressive MOBA game... unless you are one of the lucky ones who obtained a golden ticket to participate in its closed beta testing, of course!
5. Chronicle: Runescape Legends
Smack-dab in the middle of this list of the most anticipated MMOs in 2016 is this cartoony-looking, yet intriguingly in-depth and absolutely unique MMOCCG, Chronicle: Runescape Legends. Developed and published by Jagex, the company behind the timeless and somewhat legendary MMORPG, Runescape, Chronicles will revolutionize how MMOCCGs will be played. Instead of a flat 2D playing field, the game will feature a 3D map that rises up from the magical book.
This map will have several fixed positions that you can place your cards on. The fixed positions on your lane are filled with your cards while the positions in your opponent’s lane are filled with his or her own set of starting cards. In other words, you’ll be playing against your own cards. The cards in this game are pretty special as well. There are cards that will help you deal damage to your opponent, or gain bonuses to armor or attack power, provided that your hero managed to defeat the unit in question.
After 4 rounds, the 5th round will pit both heroes against each other in an epic showdown. Naturally, if you played your cards right, your hero may have some advantage over your opponent by having, say, more armor, damage or even health. Due to this special game mechanism, strategy and being able to think ahead are as important as ever in this game.
But wait, that’s not all! Every unit card you play, 3D models of the units will leap from the cards themselves into the battlefield. It’s almost like playing chess pieces but with cards. Amazing, isn’t it? Chronicle: Runescape Legends has only recently (Nov 2015) launched its closed beta phase and it is expected that the game will at least need until the middle of the year 2016 before it can be released.
Well, that’s about it for the part 1 of our Most Anticipated MMOs in 2016 article. Be sure to stay tuned to WWGDB to catch the second half of this article!
