Horror games are hit-or-miss. Over-reliance on jump scares and special effects may mean sacrificing story quality and character development - or vice-versa. You've come to the right article to find out what we think are the best games to satisfy the need for a few frights.

WWGDB - 5 of the Scariest Horror Games of All Time

Halloween is the perfect day to start up a gaming machine to awaken the need for a good fright. In case you haven’t made up your mind on what to play, read below to find out what we think are the scariest horror games of all time.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

When it comes to survival horror games, it's almost a given that one recommends Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Dark and claustrophobic environments, an unsettling ambiance, and nightmarish creatures build a terrifying atmosphere - making it ideal to play in the dark with surround sound.

You play using Daniel's perspective, exploring Castle Brennenburg and piecing together a hidden past. You'll be constantly vulnerable to the entities that crawl all over the place.

There's no slacking off on the story, either. there are guaranteed memorable moments for you as you work your way into the heart of the doomed estate. There's no debate: Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a terrific masterpiece that lingers in you even after completing the game.

Slender: The Eight Pages

If you’re the type to play horror without having to slog through loads of backstory, Slender: The Eight Pages may be the game for you.

You explore with knowledge that the Slender Man could pop out of anywhere, anytime. There’s one objective: collect the eight pages. It’s simple, yet the game will find ways to hamper your progress. One, you’ve got a suited-up horror on a task to hunt you down. The other part is the forest becoming more disorienting as you grab more of those cursed pages.

You won’t be left in the dark though. A slow introduction is handed to you, and the Slender Man takes a while before it gets serious with your meddling. You’ll be well-adjusted to moving around before everything gets terrifying. Expect some jump scares along the way, but the game doesn’t rely on that to put you out of your a-game.

Silent Hill 3

Konami’s 2003 psychological horror puts you in the shoes of Heather Mason, a normal teenager experiencing strange visions after her father’s death. You’ll then help her navigate through the town of Silent Hill to confront the past – and hopefully, put a stop to the hallucinations bothering her.

The game may be around two decades old, but its presentation is highly regarded even by today’s standards. It deals with themes of trauma, loss, and identity in still-relevant ways. You’re also going to be accompanied by an ensemble of well-made characters.

Its gameplay does show its age. Horror titles don’t particularly invest much in combat, so expect the worst when working your way out of tense situations. You’ll also need to spend a bit of thought power to figure out some of the game’s puzzles. These mechanics won’t ruin the fun, and you get to see and feel why this made it to the list.

The Evil Within

2014’s The Evil Within features Sebastian Castellanos, a detective assigned to investigate a mass murder at a psychiatric hospital. He would find out upon arrival that the place is actually a realm where nightmarish creatures and twisted traps are part of the community.

You’ll rely on taking advantage of terrain and some puzzle-solving logic to survive in this little hell world. The game’s impressive level design achieves a balance of being challenging enough to traverse without becoming frustrating. Take time to immerse yourself in the dire situation your detective is in while solving whatever puzzle stands in your way. Just make sure there are no enemies to spoil the fun. While hospitals are supposedly places of healing, what you get here is a haven of madness, with a sliver of redemption waiting near the game’s end.

You won’t be completely helpless while facing many of the game’s hostile horrors though. It’s simply a matter of when to fall back and when to fight the fright.

Resident Evil 7

Fans of the well-loved third-person perspective of the previous Resident Evil games found the shift to first-person baffling when RE7: Biohazard came out in 2017. It was also an entry that slightly departed from the action-heavy gaming franchise.

What you now get is a tense exploration in a setting filled with macabre scenes, dilapidated habitats, and cannibalistic horrors crawling out of just about anywhere. You partake in a dangerous mission as Ethan, who received an email from his missing wife.

This is less sci-fi and more horror, as shown by what was left of supposed living spaces and the traces of its inhabitants before the Dulvey Plantation fell into madness and savagery. You’re still given the fight or flight choices with every battle – including boss encounters. Expect a bit of resource management as you simply don’t find what you need lying around everywhere at once.

And this wraps our list of 5 of the scariest horror games of all time. Do you have other horrific, ornery, and terrifying games in mind?
