Summary

Fire Emblem Heroes is a mobile tactical role playing game developed by Nintendo. This is the third mobile created by Nintendo and based on the popular Fire Emblem franchise. The mobile game version still has some of the original gameplay of the popular franchise, now added more aspects of mobile gaming to cater more on the casual audience.

Plotline

The story takes place with an endless conflict between the Emblian Empire and the Kingdom of Askr. The Emblian Empire desires to rule all the worlds while the Askr Kingdom tries to oppose them. You take the role of the legendary summoner who has the ability to summon legendary heroes from different Fire Emblem worlds. You formed the Order of Heroes in order to stop the Emblian Empire from destroying the Askr Kingdom and their plans to conquer worlds.

Gameplay

For a mobile game, Fire Emblem Heroes still feels and plays like a real Fire Emblem, where some of the original mechanics were retained and then some elements that are popular in mobile games were added where it makes it engaging for both casual gamers and long-time fans of the series.

At the start of the game, you will be prompted to a short tutorial that help explain the gameplay mechanics of Fire Emblem Heroes. You have a maximum of four heroes in your team and you will fighting in an 8x6 grid stage against 3 to 5 opponents. The goal is to eliminate all enemy forces and avoid getting wiped out. You select and move your character by dragging them to any blue colored tiles, you can attack any nearby enemies in your turn, and some heroes have longer range where some enemies cannot retaliate.

The game features the triangle weapon system; the popular game mechanic for the franchise, it works like the rock-paper-scissor mechanic where certain weapons have advantages to certain weapons and have weaknesses to another weapon variant. So red weapons are strong against green weapons but are weak to blue weapons, this a layer of strategy when fighting different units, there is also a colorless weapon type that has neutral damage to other weapon types to add a twist to the variety, there are also some damage bonuses to certain unit types, such as heavy armored units are vulnerable to magic users and flying units being weak against archer units.

What was removed from the mechanics was the permadeath, where in the original games whenever a unit gets killed in battle, that unit will stay dead for good. Though a casual mode was added in future games, Fire Emblem Heroes has the permadeath feature removed as it focused on collecting a lot of heroes from other Fire Emblem games, you can only earn new heroes by summoning them or earning them as rewards from bonus missions. You are required to spend Orbs in order to summon heroes, and these heroes come out in rarities, the most common are the one to three stars and the rarest are the five stars, higher rarities means better stats and abilities so summoning more heroes will give you a better chance for a five star hero.

Heroes can be upgraded when they reached level 20, and depending on their rarity, their upgrades can be expensive. You can also unlock new skills with SP, heroes can earn SP when defeating enemies, all unlocked skills can be equipped and it features attack skills, special attack skills, passive skills or defensive skills. So choose a certain skills to match your strategy.

There are a series of story missions that you can complete, adding more plot to the story and earning rewards such as Orbs upon completion, then there are some bonus missions such as special weekly and daily missions that can provide new heroes as rewards. You can also train your newly summoned heroes in training missions to boost their experience, and if you are the competitive type, there is the duel battles that lets you fight against other player’s heroes to earn rank points.

Community

There is a large community for the Fire Emblem franchise, which means you will be encountering a lot of players in the game. You can add them to your friend list and earn Hero Feathers that are used for upgrading heroes, sometimes a hero from your friend list will randomly drop by to your castle and give you gifts, and you can also send Hero Feathers to your friends.

Graphics/ Sound

The game features cutesy cartoonish character sprites during combat and they will show character portraits whenever they attack, some characters were drawn by different artists with different art style that matches well with the hero’s personality. And all characters are voiced by their original voice actors where fans will surely be delighted with the fan service. The music was also amazing as it featured renditions of popular soundtracks of previous Fire Emblem games.

Conclusion

Fire Emblem Heroes is an amazing game that feels like the original Fire Emblem games, but build specifically for mobile gamers. Any fans of gacha-like mobile games or even tactical RPG fans will going to like this game thanks to its easy to learn mechanics and colourful characters, fans of the Fire Emblem series will going to love this as well as it stayed faithful to the original mechanics and characters.
