Summary
FreeStyle2: Street Basketball is a virtual basketball game with a third person view, with each team comprising of 3 members, making each match a 3 on 3 competition. You can customize your character’s appearance and outfit, upgrade his/her skills and attributes and purchase power-ups to help him win matches. You can also obtain increased attributes by buying clothes and unlocking toys. Players can fight with other random players, or team up against AI teams.
Gameplay
FreeStyle2 is an MMO basketball game that allows you to control only one player with a dedicated position in the team. This is different as compared to most other basketball games. When you first load the game, it will prompt you to select a position in the team. The positions are Center, Power Forward, Small Forward, Point Guard and Shooting Guard. There are short descriptions of each positions as you click on them, so take note of which one you’d most likely succeed in playing and make the selection.
You’ll then be able to customize your character. You can choose a gender and select from the many characters that appear on the left side of the screen. Click on a character and you’ll see their customizable attributes on the right side. You can change the character’s height, voice and specialty. When you’re done customizing, give a name for the Character and click the Plus sign on the lower right corner. Note that you can’t change these attributes unless you buy a special item later on in the game.
After you create your character, you are then offered a brief tutorial. This will teach you about the two game modes for Freestyle2: Competition Mode and Co-op Mode. Competition Mode can be a Team Match, Individual Mode, Tournament or Event Mode. Team Match will get other players to team up with you and go against another team of players. Individual Mode will be a game which will add 2 AIs to complete your team and you’ll be going against another team of a player in the same game mode. Tournament and Event Modes are specialized matches that are organized by the game developers and are usually announced in game updates and notifications.
The Co-op Mode has two kinds: Free match mode and VS Com mode. Free match mode lets you join random matches of teams with two, four or six players. VS Com mode lets you play against AIs from different countries around the world. As a beginner, you can start with Individual Mode, then if you think you’re ready, move to Team Match Mode. You can then level up and see if you’re good enough to compete in Co-op Mode.
Once you select a game mode, you can then go to the Game waiting area, where you get to see information about the players on your team, their level and connection status. Click the Start button when you’re ready to start the match. You can use you the arrow keys to move your character around the court. There are different key controls for defense and offense actions and you can see them on the right side of the screen as you’re playing the game. When on offense mode, you can dribble, dash, pass, shoot and fake shoot. In defense mode, you can steal, block or face up. You can also do a dash dribble (fast dribbling while dashing) by holding down the Shift key and the arrow key to whichever direction you’d like to go. This is useful for Power Forwards to execute a successful and quick shot. Your opponents will appear in black and white during a match, to distinguish them from your teammates.
As you level up, you’ll be able to unlock Skills, which can add more actions for your character. Most skills require a certain level and some Points, which is the in-game currency. Winning matches, scoring points and assisting your teammates are all essential for you to level up. Leveling up will help you achieve Attribute Points as well as the in-game currency, Points. Attribute Points are rewarded starting at Level 3 and can be used to increase character attributes like Stamina, Rebound, 3-point Shot and Steal.
There are two currencies in this game: P for Points and M for Mileage. Points are what you earn when you complete matches, achievements and earn rewards. Mileage are bonus points you can spend and you get it by buying some items from the Shop with GKash, which is the game’s premium currency. Most items in the Shop require Points, but some exclusive and rare items require either GKash or Mileage.
When you reach Level 50, you get one of the many Special Characters of the game. You’ll be given your free Special Character from the crew called Buzzer Beater. Other crews are The West, Naughty Kitties, Noble, Black Lightning, Team Slam and Ace of Wulin. Each character from these crews have 40 Attribute Points that you can add to whichever attributes you want. They also have their own animations and voices that make them stand out from basic characters.
In addition to Special Characters, you can also unlock Toys for your character. Toys grant your character attribute bonuses and will help you pass a ball during a game. You need Toy Coins to buy Toys, or you can buy Toy Coupons from the Shop for 1400 Points. Toys need batteries to perform optimally, and you can buy these from the Shop or get it as a reward for achievements.
Community
FreeStyle2 has over 27 thousand followers on its Facebook page. Basketball fans are obviously avid players of this game, and you can connect to three servers (America, Europe and Asia) to find players in your location. There are also lots of forums, game guides and discussions from Gamekiss (developer) and Steam, so you’re sure to find useful tips and tricks to enjoy the game.
Graphics/Sound
Just like its name, FreeStyle2 employs street art graphics in its game environment, as well as its many characters. The animations may look basic at first, but as you achieve more moves, you’ll see exciting animations for defense and offense. There’s a soundtrack found under Jukebox in the Settings menu, and you can edit the tracks if you wish. True to its theme, hip-hop music is the main genre of the songs in this game.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for a basic basketball game that’s free to play, starts with simple matches and allows you to upgrade and get more characters along the way, then FreeStyle2: Street Basketball can provide all these for you. It’s simple enough for new players, but can be as intricate as it can be for more advanced players. This game has a little bit for everyone, and with lots of characters, moves and upgrades to select, this game is worth every second of your time.
