Why your supposedly friendly neighbors became edgy when you bring up anything related to the disappearance? As you reach closer and closer to the truth… the peril becomes apparent. What will happen to you if you found out the truth?
Plotline
Your uncle James heard of your plight and has decided to give you the deed to a run-down house – Number 17, Libertine Heights, Lakeside, which he had won in a poker game, along with 3000 in cash to get the place fixed up. However, he ended his letter with a note that warns you of possible dangers to come…
As you begin your new life in your new home, you started to notice the mystery surrounding the house as told by your Suburbia neighbors. The previous owner of your house is a famous band member of the Dead Heavenly called Kurt Morrison. Everything seems normal despite the mystery that is until you found a gun taped to the bottom of the coffee table and the suspicious behavior of your friendly neighbor, Natalie. The suspense is killing you and you have decided to launch an investigation, a subtle one at that, to find out the truth behind what seems like a boring old suburban. Are you willing to do what it takes to find out the truth?
Gameplay
The first thing you will need to do in Suburbia is to select your character and customize his or her hairstyle, facial features and outfit. Once you’re done, you can enter the game and remove the yellow police tape on the front door of your new home. You will also meet your friendly neighbors, who are more than willing to help you to settle in.
The gameplay is simple – there are 2 main aspects of the game that you need to pay attention to, your energy and your mood. In Suburbia, you’ll need to use energy to perform actions, like unpacking goods that you bought from the store, use the toilet or the sink, sleep, bath, rummage your fridge for snacks and many others. However, in return for spending energy, you will gain mood points.
Sometimes, certain actions will also reward you with materials that you will need later on to craft and unpack items, such as the grill. For example, raw meat that you collect from raiding the fridge can be used along with spice that you can get from your kitchen cupboard to be cooked into a tasty plate of steak at the grill.
Furthermore, you will need to use energy on specific furniture/items to earn skill points as well. Your character has a total of 7 different skills, namely cleverness, technique, charisma, style, fitness, creativity and knowledge. You can buy skill objects from the shop and spend an energy point to use them in order to gain skill points for that particular skill. For instance, you can increase your character’s cleverness by using the Sudoku book while the styling mirror will increase your character’s style. Technical times, instead, increases your character’s technique and there are plenty more skill objects that you can buy to improve your other skills.
These skills are not increased instantly though, you will need to wait a certain period of time for the skill object to generate the skill points for you. The longer the duration needed, the more points you’ll get. Why are these skills important? Well, these skills are vital if you ever plan to get promotions in your career so that you can earn more money to buy more in-game stuff.
Moreover, you can similarly spend your energy at your neighbors house by interacting with your neighbors many energy-consuming objects (furniture, mainly). You will need energy to interact, such as threaten, kiss or talk, with your neighbor as well. Although many aspects of the game uses up energy, your energy will recharge over time, specifically 1 energy point every 5 minutes. However, if you can’t wait, there is also another far quicker option – you can spend real money to buy energy instead!
Since the house you’ve gotten from your Uncle James is rather run-down, you will need to clean the house up a bit before it is fit to live in. You’ll need to use your mood to rid your house of grime and dust, clear wild grasses on your lawn or to scare away pests like rodents and raccoon's. You can also chop down wild-growing trees on your lawn. Every time you use your mood, you will stand a chance of earning materials and experience points as well!
Cleaning up is tough work, it’s perhaps time to put your foot up and relax… but wait! You haven’t furnished your house yet! To do so, you will need some money first. Since you’re a musician by trade, you can earn money by recording a hit music on your rockanrolla guitar. You’ll need both mood and energy to record a song. Similarly to using skill objects, you will then need to wait a period of time before you can collect your money from your work. If you did your job well and that you have improved on your skills, you may even get a promotion! Promotion means that you will unlock a better paying job and you will also gain a title. You will also be one step closer to developing your career in Suburbia!
Once you have enough bills in your pocket, it’s time to finally hit the shop! There are a huge variety of furniture as well as other accessories for you to buy! However, most items are level-locked and some may require rubies (real money currency) to purchase instead. After purchasing a few items, you can then place them in your home. Every item or furniture placed will earn you luxury points. You will need these points in order to allow the story to progress. For example, episode 2 of the game requires 2500 luxury points to unlock.
Soon, you may find yourself running out of space to place your items. Have no worries! In Suburbia, you can buy new rooms (each costing around a thousand or more) to expand your home. What if you ran out of land to build your rooms? You can also purchase more land by spending a sizable amount of money along with some materials.
Suburbia also offers a list of achievements that you can thrive for. Some achievements can be earned by merely cutting down enough trees or getting rid of enough wild grasses. Some, however, will require you to spend in-game money to improve your home. Thus, practically every action in this game can be associated with an achievement.
Community
There are almost 1 million likes on Suburbia’s Facebook fan page and this translates into a very strong base of community. Surely only a good game can get this many people to like it, right? If you need neighbors for your game, this Facebook page is definitely the place you should be posting on (instead of trying to get all your friends to join you in the game). There are also freebies, such as in-game cash or, on the rare occasion, rubies, which you can get from the game moderators from time to time.
Graphics/Sound
The graphics in this game are simplistic yet brilliant! It has an overall polished look and are richly detailed. This is the sort of graphics that are suitable for a life simulation game.
The music on the interface, on the other hand, has birds chirruping endlessly in the background. Although singing birds generally causes a relaxing feeling, excessive bird singing will only cause annoyance. The best part is perhaps the jazz-type music the game uses in its shop. It’s the kind of music that you would probably hear when you are shopping at the mall.
Community
All in all, Suburbia is a game that takes ‘life simulation’ to the next level by having an intriguing, Sherlock-worthy plot in the suburban area in the game. That’s not all; the game features an excellent and easy-to-use decorating function for you to redecorate the run-down house. You will need to clean the house up as well. You can also work on your career for money and then use the money to shop for awesome-looking goods and furniture for your home. The game even offers a ‘crafting’ system whereby you can cook food items using the raw materials you’ve gathered from your kitchen cupboard or the refrigerator. Being a social game, you will need to interact with your fellow neighbors to uncover the truth behind Kurt’s disappearance too. Will you be able to find out the truth after all? Try the game today and find out!
