Summary
In this modern day and age, the gaming industry is filled with triple-A-styled MMORPGs with amazing 3D graphics run on powerful game engines and “easy” gameplay. However, Tibia is here to break those rules. With amazing pixel art, hardcore gameplay, and the ability to be whichever character you want, Tibia embodies the core of an old-school MMORPG, the type that popular MMORPG, Runescape, was based on. Couple that with amazing landscapes to explore, secret hideouts to find, and adventures to go on, Tibia is as good as it gets. After all, it has close to 2 decades worth of experience in the MMO genre! So, if you longed for the nostalgic feel of old school MMORPGs, Tibia is definitely a game you should play. Give it a try today!
Plotline
The game doesn’t really impose a storyline for you to follow. Instead, you are encouraged to actually role-play and craft your character’s own stories. This is a really refreshing change from the usual MMORPGs that often force their storylines down their players’ throats despite using cliché stories and putting very little thought into actually innovating the game’s lore.
Gameplay
To start, you’ll first need to sign up and pick a gender to play. Aside from gender, there isn’t any character customization per se in Tibia since the features of the characters became pretty much insignificant once you realized that Tibia is a top-down game.
That said, in this game, you’ll have up to 4 different archetype character classes or vocations, as the game calls them, to choose from. These classes include the brawny and well-armored Knight, the magic-wielding Sorcerer, the nature-loving Druids, and oddly, a ranged, archer-like class that can call upon holy magics, called the Paladins. Unlike most MMOs, you are free to try out each of these classes prior to committing to a class.
Since the game’s an old-school MMO, as evident from its top-down view and pixel-like looks, the controls in this game is oddly “modern-like”. In this game, you can use the arrow keys or the WASD keys to move your character. If you like, you could even use the classic point-and-click as well. It’s also interesting to note the looting method in this game. Unlike the auto-loot that most games implement one way or the other, you’ll actually need to drag and drop loot from the slain enemy’s loot box into your own backpack.
Not to mention, the dialogues in this game is even pretty old-fashioned. Instead of having a dialogue box popping up in the game screen itself, the game’s interactive dialogues, the ones where you can pick a further action for, are displayed in the game’s chat box at the bottom of the game screen. There will be links within the texts that you can click on to further advance the conversation and possibly reveal a quest which you can then promptly pick up. If you ask me, a game definitely doesn’t get any more old school than that!
One of the main foci in Tibia is its exploration aspect. Unlike modern MMOs where you simply need to head to the quest location and grind away, there are no such “locations” in Tibia. In fact, you are completely free to explore the various areas and cities in the game world, including places that are underwater or on the tops of mountains, and to seek out quests on your own by interacting with various NPCs you’ll encounter along the way. There is also a ton – and I do mean a whole lot – of secret locations for you to find as well. Most of these secret locations may require some form of tool to uncover or access, such as a shovel or a rope, and they usually contain something interesting at the end like a boss fight that ends with an amazing loot drop.
Talking about loot, Tibia follows the tried-and-true tradition of old-school MMOs and offers a huge variety of loot items for you to hunt for and use, especially equipments that have really distinctive visuals. However, you can’t exactly collect every weapon you find interesting in this game due to the limited inventory capacity. You can easily refer to your character’s capacity by looking at the value right beneath the torch in your inventory. This value will be reduced whenever you pick up an item with weight. Naturally, you won’t be able to carry anymore once you’ve reached the capacity limit. Besides picking up and using better equipments, you can also enhance your equipments through various means in an attempt to give your character any extra help it can get.
Why the need for the help though? Well, being old-school means the game doesn’t really have any training wheels on. Aside from the infrequent tutorials (that are more frequent at the beginning of the game), you’ll need to figure out a lot of stuff on your own. Trial and error is pretty common and so is character death. Dying can be pretty costly in this game as you’ll lose a small portion, but a portion nonetheless, of your accumulated experience points, making leveling up quite a chore if you keep dying in Tibia.
In addition, Tibia provides its players with exciting PvE raids, mainly monster hunts and boss fights, as well as a PvP duel feature. You can also rent a house in this game, and decorate it with furniture and collected items, organize a virtual wedding ceremony with a fellow player with Lynda presiding over the event in the church of Thais, and more!
If you enjoyed the game, you should definitely consider buying something extra for your character via the in-game shop, such as blessings, potions, runes, mounts, outfits, more house equipments as well as transportation (a.k.a. teleportation) items. There’s also a VIP-like Premium Time feature to improve your gaming experience. Premium players will get access to premium areas; use certain transportation devices like ships and magic carpets, larger storage, or to found a guild. You’ll be showing some support to the developers behind the game you love as well!
Community
Similar to most MMORPGs, Tibia provides players with the opportunity to play together through various guilds. By being in one, you’ll get access to the guild’s hall, and can chill out with your fellow guild mates there. However, the population of new players in this game can be a tad bit small at the moment, so the “newbie” areas are usually pretty empty.
Graphics/ Sound
Tibia may not win any prizes for having breathtaking graphics, but its’ pixel-like visuals are good enough and definitely brings out the nostalgic old-school look of the game. Not to mention, the details (and in essence, the love) being put into each and every one of the models in the game is very apparent. However, the game doesn’t exactly contain any sound or music.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, Tibia is a fun old-school MMORPG that rivals that of Runescape and yet adds its own charm to the mix. The game contains crevices of secret stashes and locations, spread across various differently themed zones, for you to find and explore in addition to the usual MMO stuff like raiding and PvPing. So, if you enjoy playing old-school MMOs or if you want to relive the nostalgic “good ol’ times”, Tibia is the game for you. Be sure to drop by and experience the game for yourself now!
