Summary
Anarchy Online is one of the first science fiction-theme Massively Multiplayer Online RPG at its time when it was introduced in 2001. Originally a subscription-based game, it was one of the first games to introduce free trials to players who wanted to give the game a try. It features deep character interaction and development and has a wide range of classes to choose from.
Plotline
The game features a futuristic timeline where the story focuses on the fictional desert planet called Rubi-Ka, where the influence of politics and military have tarnished the planet to win over the valuable mineral called Notum which is abundant in Rubi-Ka. Players will be involved in the conflict especially interacting and coordinating with other clans such as separatists, terrorists, aliens and ancient beings.
Gameplay
Anarchy was released in 2001, so majority of its gameplay were still experimental and will have mixed reactions to both veterans and newbie players. It is one of the games that featured new gameplay systems that are new at that time, some of them include instance missions, dynamic quests and more.
At the start of the game, players will have to choose from the four races available. Each of them are unique from each other and offers different stats. For example the Atrox is specialized in warrior and tank classes as they have higher strength and stamina stats, but poor in intelligence and psychic. The Nanomage is the caster specialized race with high intelligence but lower strength. Opifex are the agile race with higher agility but has lower stamina. Solitus are your basic race with a well-balanced stats.
Character customization is rather limited in Anarchy, you can get to pick your gender and your desired height and weight, and then you will be picking from a series of face templates then that is it. You can customize the outfit from the equipment as well as some accessories in-game that can also provide stat enhancements.
There are fourteen classes or known as professions in Anarchy Online, these are Adventurer, Agent, Bureaucrat, Doctor, Enforcer, Engineer, Fixer, Keeper, Martial Artist, Meta-Physicist, Nano Technician, Shade and Soldier. Each of them plays differently, some may be effective in combat while the others are for trading or diplomacy.
Combat is similar with traditional games where you must point to the target enemy and give a command to attack. In the case for Anarchy Online, the system is still clunky as you still need to click on the engage button when you target an enemy. The pacing is slower as the game is not focused much in pure action but rather in tactics.
The skills system is so far complex but rewarding. You earn skills points from the start of the game and when you level up your character, you can improve your proficiency in your weaponry, from melee, ranged or psychic abilities, it also include improvements in trading, interacting with other races and so on. Allocating your skill points depending on your profession will give you an advantage.
The problem with the game is the user interface, it can be difficult to navigate around the interface as some functions are sorted in hard to see areas that players might missed out. Though the button shortcuts are available to provide ease of access, some navigation features, such as quest tracking are difficult to use as you need to activate it so you can follow its location.
There are dynamic quests found in the game, these are different from standard quests as they are created by players where they can also adjust the difficulty that the participants desires and will enter in an instanced room. Instanced missions are only available to players who created it and there will be no interference from other third parties.
Community
Despite being an old game, there are still active players in Anarchy Online. Since the game has shifted to a free-to-play business model, more players are participating in the game that still maintains the community alive. There are also player versus player encounters in the game where it is highly encourage. Those who participate can earn rewards depending on the number of kills. There are also raid missions where other players can participate in groups.
Graphics/ Sound
Visuals are very outdated, as it was released in 2001. Though even with the game being still online up to now, there were no visual upgrades that were added for the game, some players who are into graphics may ignore the game due to the dated visuals. As for the music, the game has a lot of tracks that provides good emotions depending on the area, some provide epic tune similar to sci-fi movies while some feature techno music to heighten up the mood.
Conclusion
Anarchy Online is more than 15 years old but still managed to compete with other current online games. Despite the dated graphics, the gameplay is still great as well as its deep lore. Though the user interface may require some improvements, its deep skill development system is one of the best. Players who like to play classic games might give this a try.
