Plotline
Beauties Battle has a pretty whimsical storyline. It begins with a funny introduction where a hot-blooded guy was sucked into a scroll called the Red Mansion which contains a painting of the legendary and beautiful maidens from ancient China as well as from Chinese mythologies.
He landed in a beautiful world and met the lady of his dreams, Daji. However, the evil Black Witch wanted the guy gone from the world. Apparently, legend has it that the person with the scroll can conquer all Beauties and the Black Witch wanted all the Beauties for herself.
You play as the heroic guy, who is freeing these beautiful ladies from the witch’s grasp, in this game. Will you be successful?
Gameplay
The game is available in 3 different languages and you’ll get to choose the language you want to play the game in at the very beginning of the game. Once you’re done, you’ll be shown a pretty amusing short clip depicting the storyline of the game, and later, you’ll be guided through the game’s pretty lengthy tutorial. The bulk of the tutorial cannot be skipped either so it may feel a bit restrictive to some players. However, due to the complexity of the game features in Beauties Battle, it’s best to pay close attention so you could learn how the game work.
To begin, you’ll need to have a team of Beauties to fight for you first. You can summon new Beauties or at least get their shards from the Treasury. You’ll get a couple of free summons per day but if you want to summon more Beauties, you can spend money (both in-game or premium cash called Bullions). Naturally, by spending premium, you’ll get higher quality Beauties (higher Star levels) who are far more powerful than any mere Beauties.
You can improve your Beauties further and subsequently increasing your Beauties’ combat rating by leveling them up and upgrading their skills. Besides deploying them in battle, you could also use EXP books you looted to level them up. For skills, you simply need to have enough game cash to upgrade them, but when it comes to unlocking new skills, you’ll need to spend the relatively rarer Souls to improve the quality level of your Beauties, and hence, unlock new skills. Each Beauty can equip up to 5 different skills.
Need more Souls? Well, you can “Love” your Beauties (up to 10 times per day) to not only get yourself some bonus Souls but also win other valuable stuff as rewards. After leveling up, you could Entertain your Beauties as well.
Once you reached a certain level, you’ll gain access to your pet. Pets in this game are not only incredibly adorable; they are also very useful during combat since they have their own abilities out of which you can pick one to use. Not to forget that like any MMORPG, your Beauties can also be equipped with the best gear you can find. You can usually win some nice starter equipment by participating in the many stages of Challenges. These items can also be upgraded to increase their combat efficiency.
Challenges are basically the “PvE campaign” in Beauties Battle. Here, you can take on various enemies in the Normal Dungeon, or if you’re looking for a tougher challenge, the Elite Dungeon. Each stage in a Chapter within the campaign, be it normal or elite, will offer 3 side objectives for you to achieve. Only by completing all of them will you be on track to accumulate enough Stars to win additional rewards.
Interestingly, each Chapter will provide you with some opportunity to recruit a specific Beauty to your team too. But, before you can do so, you’ll need to play a mini-game. The mini-game varies from Chapter to Chapter, but generally they include games like Paper-Scissors-Stone and a “Clicker” game (though, it is more of a tapping game).
As you advance in Beauties Battle you’ll also unlock new PvE dungeons like the daily event dungeons whereby you can earn special materials via specific dungeons. There is even a plethora of quests that you can complete to progress the storyline and/or to earn more loot.
Unlike most traditional MMORPGs, Beauties Battle utilizes a match-3-based combat system with plenty of power-ups as well as placing an emphasis on heroine formation and elements. Before starting any battles, you’re given the chance to restructure your formation so you could counter whatever your opponent has in store for you.
The formation itself seems simple enough – you only need to fill 3 slots up with all the Beauties you have. Of course, the more crucial aspect of this is the arrangement of the Beauties you dispatch. To decide the arrangement, you’ll first need to look at the element of both your Beauties and your enemies. Use the Beauty with the correct counter-element and you’ll gain huge advantages over your opponents. Of course, if you’re unsure how to arrange your Beauties, you can simply use the auto-arrange function and the game will do it for you.
The combat itself is pretty interesting as well. In this game, you’ll need to match up the various pieces on the board to perform an action. What action your Beauty will take depends on which type of pieces you match. For instance, by matching up swords, your Beauty will deal some damage; by matching hearts, your Beauty will drain some life from her opponent; while by matching up enough shields, you may be able to reduce or completely negate any damage that your Beauty will suffer for that round. Admittedly, the shield comes in handy when you know for certain that the enemy will attack on that round. This is prominently indicated on a small red banner right beside the name of the enemy.
If you recall, your Beauties also have their own abilities too. So, to unleash their abilities, you’ll need to match up any 15 pieces to get a special “ability tile”. Then, all you need to do is to match up that ability tile to rain havoc on your enemy. Sometimes, purple chests will also appear on your board as you play. If you could get it to the bottom of the board before the timer (as indicated by the number right beside the chest) is up, you can win yourself some extra rewards to boot.
With this combat system in mind, players should know that there are quite a number of different combat strategies and techniques that they could use, especially during tough boss fights. Bosses themselves can use their skills so you’ll need to be really prepared if you plan on getting your team through the fight without any unfortunate deaths. Of course, for players who want to enjoy a more casual combat experience, they could simply turn on auto-battle and leave it at that.
Perhaps the only downside of this combat system is that you aren’t allowed to swap between the Beauties you dispatch, much like how you can swap Pokemons you bring into battle with you. This is a feature that will really help you make full use of the elemental aspect of your Beauties so you can use the correct Beauty to counter the element of the enemy.
Aside from PvE, Beauties Battle also offer a ton of fun PvP games for you to test your skills in, such as Point Match, War of Gods, and the usual Arena with ranked matches. You can earn merits by winning PvP matches and then spend them at the Merits Store.
Community
Guild is a rather important aspect of community building in Beauties Battle. By being part of a guild, you can participate in fun guild-only events like the guild war, guild dungeon, and even mine battles where you need to protect your guild’s mine while raiding others. You’ll also be expected to contribute to the guild by worshipping the Divine Beast and in return, you could “shake” the Money Tree to collect free copper by playing a Bejeweled Blitz-like mini game. If you managed to match up a ton of gems, you could win quite a huge sum of coppers at the Money Tree.
Graphics/ Sound
From the very start, you’ll notice that Beauties Battle has some really nice, high quality graphics. The scenes and their various Beauties are all intricately drawn and the details added to each of them are simply amazing. The game also managed to nail it when it comes to providing a nice selection of soothing oriental music as well as adding in voice acting which I’m prepared to bet the male gamers would enjoy.
Conclusion
To sum up, Beauties Battle is a fun and addictive MMORPG that features a ton of beautiful female characters for you to recruit and a large world to explore. The gameplay is not as demanding as a real-time match-3 battle game (that has a time limit for every round) and there is always something for you to do in this game. The only thing is, the game is designed almost exclusively for male gamers, and hence, the game may have effectively alienated the huge portion of female casual MMO gamers out there. That said, Beauties Battle is still a solid and entertaining MMORPG that you can play on your mobile for free. Do give it a try today!
