Summary
Featuring an adorable virtual pet called Bloom, Bloomberry is a match-3 puzzle-adventure where you can not only take care of Bloom but also decorate your pet’s home with a plethora of fantastic décor. As you progress, you’ll get to unlock new locations to break evil spells on and clean up in hopes of restoring the planet’s dwindling magical energy.
Plotline
It is uncertain as to why the world was completely shrouded in evil spells which had caused thorny weeds and vines to overgrow and envelope entire buildings. However, what matters is that you are the one who’s going to fix everything. From clearing away the weeds to restoring the planet’s dwindling magical energy, you can gradually bring the world back to life simply by playing match-3 games!
Gameplay
Although most of the game is pretty familiar and hence, “standard” for a game in the match-3 genre, Bloomberry manages to bring a few fresh new twists to the gameplay. Like other similar games, you simply need to match 3 or more of the same fruit type together to collect them from the playing area. If you managed to match 4 fruits together, you’ll get special fruits with halos which will either clear away an entire row or column (or even both if you use two of them in combination) when matched.
Match-5s will, in turn, reward you with an explosive magic charge. Unlike the fruits with halos, a magic charge doesn’t need to be matched to be activated. You can either swipe it with a neighboring fruit piece to trigger the explosion, or you can double tap the bomb to make it go off.
Every explosion you trigger will slowly fill up the rune orb located at the bottom left corner of the screen. When full, a rune orb will then be added to the board. If you match it with a neighboring piece, it will collect all other fruits of the same type of that said piece. You can even use it in tandem with another special fruit or magic charge for an even more astounding effect!
All of these special fruits and bombs are important especially when you encounter a puzzle that has a really tricky grid or obstacles that just won’t go away. There are several types of obstacles in this game which may be familiar to you, such as the marmalade tiles which you can get rid of by matching over them, spider webs that can be removed by using the fruit underneath it in a match, and ladybugs and grasses which can be cleared by matching next to them.
There are also corrupted treasure chests that you can open by matching next to the chest until its health dropped to zero, and the snail which you’ll need to drop to the bottom of the board just to collect it. Overall, in terms of gameplay, Bloomberry tries its hardest to keep its gameplay fun, exciting and fresh by introducing new gameplay elements, namely obstacles and challenges, on a pretty constant basis. It keeps you on your toes and is criterion that I’ve always look for in a quality match-3 game.
Now, your game objectives don’t always require you to only clear away a certain obstacle, like the marmalade or the treasure chest. From time to time, you may need to collect a specific number of a specific fruit type as well. However, you only have a limited number of moves to do so, thus it’s important to plan your moves and keep your main objectives in mind. However, when worst comes to worst, you can choose to spend 8 gems (premium currency) to buy 5 more moves just so you can get a level done.
Need some help with your game? Bloomberry has a nice selection of power-ups that you can use. There are two types of power-ups mainly – one of which will need to be brought to a level prior to entering said level (since these power-ups usually add special fruits, rune charges or bombs to the board right at the start) while the other type of power-up, such as the firefly (clears away any piece of your choice), can be purchased and used directly during a game.
You only have 5 lives in the game, and although they do regenerate over time, they do so pretty slowly. Hence, it’s best if you can avoid failing a level, be it by buying 5 more moves or using a power-up you’ve zealously hoarded.
The nuts, a.k.a. acorns, that you earn from playing these match-3 puzzles can then be used to buy amazing decorations from the store. Each decoration will contribute some magical energy which the planet will then, assumingly, absorb. The more energy you give it, the stronger the world will be to fight against the blanket of evil spells that beleaguered it.
You can also buy treats for your Bloom now and then – there are quite a variety of foodstuff available to purchase. Purportedly, you can customize your pet’s appearance as well but I have yet to unlock this feature even after level 20.
In Bloomberry, you can complete quests to earn some free gems, or watch video ads for free nuts (or if you’re lucky, a free gem). However, you could also show the developers some love by purchasing nuts and gems using real cash. These game currencies can then be used to buy more power-ups, lives, exclusive décor, and more.
Community
Similar to most match-3 games, Bloomberry is a social game and as such, you can add friends, by linking your game to your Facebook account and get them to send you free lives.
Graphics/ Sound
The graphics in Bloomberry is very colorful and bright. I like how everything looks so well-defined in the game. The various expressions and sounds that your Bloom makes is just so cute as well. In terms of sound, the music in this game is very nice to listen to – it’s a bit mellow - and has a sort of modern-tribal theme that I can see myself getting behind.
The only bone to pick about this game is its cascade effects. It’s just a bit too slow for my taste and I believe it would be better if the effect can be quickened. Cascades are possibly the most exciting part of any match-3 game since it can a sort of rush, but if it’s too slow, it doesn’t get that feeling; that rush across all that well.
Conclusion
All in all, Bloomberry is a casual match-3 puzzle/building/pet simulation game that’s really fun to play. Aside from challenging match-3 games that will keep you on your toes, the game has a cute little virtual pet for you to rear and plenty of beautiful decorations to spruce up the place with.
