Gameplay
After you start up the game, you’ll be sent straight into your first game against another player. There’s a very simple tutorial provided, which may be insufficient for players who have never played games like this before. Don’t worry though – let’s figure out how the game works together in this review!
To start bowling, you’ll need to know how to bowl, virtually, first! To do so, you have to click and hold on the bowling ball. Then, adjust the position of the ball so that it’ll be pointing towards the pins that you want to hit. Drag the ball back as much as you want, depending on how much strength you’d want to use, and get your armswing right! Release the bowling ball to get it rolling! The trick in releasing is, similarly to real life bowling, to release your hold on the ball only when the ball is almost touching down on the lane. Sounds simple enough, but you may need some time to get used to it before you can dish out strikes in a chain!
Furthermore, there are several game modes that you can enjoy, including 1-on-1 with other players, playing with friends, single games where you have to perform trick shots to win and mini games like roulette and slot machine. In 1-on-1, you’ll need to pay a sum for as the entrance fee before you can play. The winner of the game will take all. You will also be able to play in different locations from, not only in the US, but also from around the world! This includes Los Angeles, Hawaii, New York, the Carribean, Moscow, Paris, and Las Vegas. The higher class locations you go, the higher the entrance fee though!
Anyway, in this game mode, the standard rules of bowling apply. This means that if you managed to hit any of the pins in your first go, you’ll earn a second chance to bowl. However, if your ball went down the gutter, your turn will be over and your opponent will take his/ her turn. It’s of course always best to get a strike and earn the maximum score of 10 points per frame. Oh and if you get a strike in the last frame, you will get another bonus shot to earn yourself more points. This bonus shot may sometimes be the determining factor between a lost and a win!
“What is a frame?” you may wonder. Well, in each game initially, you’ll be playing 5 frames or rounds per game. This number will gradually increase as you reached higher level locations and it can go up to 10 frames in total. Moreover, the game offers realistic in-game physics, so it is possible for your ball to get a sudden hook due to friction between the ball and the lane. Sometimes, random crates of free power-ups may appear on the lane. You can roll your ball over it to collect the item.
There are also different missions that you can complete in every game you play. By completing it, you will earn extra 1 premium cash, which you can then use to play the single player mode. In addition, if you get on a winning streak, you will earn bonus experience points as well!
Bowling King is definitely a fun game to play, but its best feature is undoubtedly its single player (trick shot) game mode! In this game mode, you’ll be playing on lanes that are filled with various creative obstacles. For instance, there are ramps that you’ll have to use to “jump” your ball over obstacles and also short pillars that you have to dodge. Each game consists of 10 frames and each frame has its own trick shot challenge. Unlike the 1-on-1 mode, you will get two chances to bowl for every frame even if you hit the gutter the first time.
To make things much more interesting, some of these obstacles are moving and some aren’t... and at times, all of them are moving constantly. There are even “gates” that will open and close in a certain order, so you need to time your roll perfectly so it can get pass the gate. Not to mention, you’ll need to position your ball perfectly as well or it will hit the sides of the gate and veer off into the gutter. The single player game mode is truly challenging and it’s not only about getting the timing right for all the moving obstacles, but also the positioning of your ball and a dash of luck.
By bowling and winning in Bowling King, you will earn special yet randomly given themed bowling pins as well. There are many different themes in this game and all of them are based on different shades of colors. Collect all 10 of them to be able to complete the collection and use them in your games!
Furthermore, the shop in Bowling King also provides some interesting virtual merchandises that you can buy using the various types of premium currency in the game. This includes power-ups, special bowling equipments, and of course, plenty of cash-for-virtual-currency exchanges. There are only 2 types of power-ups in Bowling King, namely “no gutter”, whereby your ball will not go into the gutter no matter how badly you bowl in your next round as well as “size-up”, in which your bowling ball will turn into a bigger sized version of itself when it is near to the pins. These power-ups can be used to give yourself an advantage over your opponent, and thankfully for free-to-play players, you are given 5 of each power-ups for free to have fun with!
In terms of bowling equipments, all of them will cost you premium currencies in this game though you will need to level up to unlock these items first. There are special bowling balls that you can buy to gain certain advantages. For example, the Star-Tech has a higher hook chance than the normal balls. There are also other special balls, like the “Troll”-themed balls that can only be won via roulette, which, of course, will cost you premium cash to play. There are even special bowling lanes, such as vintage lane, ghost lane, penguin-themed lane, casino lane and many more, that you can buy to spruce up your gameplay a bit! These lanes do not provide any advantage besides their more appealing visuals.

Graphics/ Sound
The 3D graphics in the game are very nicely designed and rendered, particularly the bowling balls and pins. In terms of sound, the game provides background music in the lobby that sounds like the sort of music you’d hear in a casino. Interestingly, the game also provides commentary while you’re playing.
