Summary
Call of Roma is a Real-Time Strategy (RTS) city management web browser game. It is set in the times of the post-republican phase of the ancient Roman civilization, which is started from the ruling time of Emperor Augustus. In Call of Roma, you play as a consul of the Roman Empire. Gather resources, build your city and army, preach religion and go to war to expand your empire. This game brings you back to the ancient times of the Great Roman Empire to write the glorious chapters of your life!
Plotline
The Roman Republic is being weakened by civil wars and rebel uprisings. These have threatened the stability of the government, so seigneurs were forced to gain political dominance and land ownership through extreme violence. Call of Roma is set in this era of political turmoil, where you are assigned as a consul to rebuild a great empire. The power of change now lies in your hands!
Gameplay
In Call of Roma, you are tasked to build a city to attract citizens to move in and develop an army. The goal of the game is to keep the balance between production and expansion of facilities and armed forces. To achieve that, you need to grow the population of your city as they are the foundation of everything. Citizens are the workers that gather resources, make products and construct facilities to boost the economy of your city. They are also the loyal troops that conquer other lands or protect your empire.
All resources in Call of Roma come from the farm, quarry, iron mine, and sawmill production. They produce the needed materials for construction, technology study, troops training, manufacturing, and expedition. With the construction of these production sites, you create jobs for your citizens and you can assign them to work in these sites. The number of people working in a production site determines the rate of the product output. Farm produces crops that become the main food source for your citizens and army. Quarry produces stone for construction and building upgrades. Iron mine produces iron which is used for arming your troops. Sawmill produces lumber which is used for training sagittarii or Archers, and building siege weapons.
In addition to resource gathering, facilities are vital in the game too. There are a few Indispensable buildings such as cottage, warehouse, and amphitheater. Cottages house your citizens, so the higher the level of the cottages, the more people that will come to live in your city. The warehouse is where you store and protect your resources from marauders. The amphitheater is where you recruit and train heroes. You can assign your heroes to various exercise modes so that they can gain experience and level up. In the amphitheater, you can convert heroes that you have captured during an expedition to join your army too. You can give luxury items to increase the loyalty of your heroes and reduce the chance of them being captured when they are defeated. Recruited heroes can lead your troops to conquer other empires or defend your city from invasion. Another two important buildings in this game are the barrack and the plaza. The barrack allows you to train your people into soldiers and the plaza is used to recover your lost soldiers after an expedition.
The influence of religion is very powerful in Call of Roma. Worship impacts the strength of your empire greatly. Different gods grant different blessings to the people. The blessings can boost your resource production, the training speed of soldiers, and increase the population growth of the city. When you have too many resources, you can trade them through the market. The progress of your technology is also determined by the knowledge of the people. You build universities and academies to increase the knowledge level of your citizens.
As a city management game, Call of Roma could be overwhelming for beginners as there are many things to manage. Luckily it has a very systematic quest system. You can follow the growth and daily quests to develop and enhance your city in a sequential manner. The quest will guild you in basic infrastructure, city management, city planning, resource production, and many more. The daily login quest will give you a Zodiac Goat daily for you to do a pull from the Zodiac Ceremony. You can get a free random item from the Zodiac ceremony for each round.
Other than city management, the essence of Call of Roma is to expand territory with your army. You can launch expeditions to conquer other cities or wilderness to acquire more resources. Send your Hero to colonize, raid or scout your enemies and wilderness. The number of expeditions you can launch simultaneously is depending on the level of your plaza. You can check your troop's movement, battle status, and expedition results in battle reports.
Community
Conquering other lands alone can be hard, so Call of Roma features a multiplayer guild system, called Leagues, as well. Join a League or create one to invite your friends to join you as allies. You can battle other Leagues together with your friends to have a higher chance of winning. Creating a League is easy, you only need to pay 10,000 Sesterces. You can upgrade your League with more Sesterces to increase the member capacity as you can only have 10 members in a level 1 League. There is also a global chat function that allows you to make friends (and foes) with players around the world.
Graphics/ Sound
Since Call of Roma is a browser-based game, the graphics are quite limited. However, the artwork is still good and reminisce old strategy games like Age of Empires. The interface could be quite overwhelming as there are many functionalities in the game. Nonetheless, the animation in the game is quite smooth for a browser game. The music and sound effects are basic, and could get dull very soon due to lack of variety.
