Summary
Over the years, platformers have evolved from simple sidescrolling games where all you have to do is jump across spaces and reach a certain point to rather extensive 3D experiences. However, the charm of retro-style titles never ceases to impress, and they continue to be a part of everyone’s gaming library. Moreover, they continued to evolve by incorporating exciting combat mechanics, RPG elements, and good stories.
Cloaks and Capes is a great example of the growth of the genre. Though it prides itself as a platformer, it is essentially a rogue-like sidescrolling shooter with RPG elements. It’s not the most popular game out there, but we all know that being under the radar doesn’t say anything about the quality, right? We can safely say it’s one of the most underrated hidden gems we’ve ever encountered on Steam.
With that said, should you give Cloaks and Capes a shot? Before you start shooting fireballs, let’s check out what it has to offer:
Plotline
Your son is dead, and although we cannot relate to nor share the sadness, we know what every father would want: bring their son back.
Of course, this won’t work in real life, but this is the case in Cloaks and Capes. You’ll take the mantle of a man known as the Caster, who lost his son after the rampage of a demon known as Azazel in the town of Castriel. After retrieving his son’s spirit from the Elder, he’ll go on a quest to drown the demon and his underlings in the flames of vengeance and anguish.
The story isn’t told much in-game, but it remains compelling and stays in the background as you play. This is all right, considering the plot isn’t exactly its focal point.
Gameplay
Cloaks and Capes’ gameplay is a hodgepodge of several genres. Primarily, it prides itself as a platformer, though it is essentially a sidescrolling twin-stick shooter with roguelike and RPG elements. It’s a mouthful, we know, but if Celeste and Cuphead had a baby, this would be it. It provides a tight platforming experience while keeping you preoccupied with shooting down enemies that come your way.
With this in mind, Cloaks and Capes plays like a typical retro platformer. There are multiple levels you need to go through, each with a boss at the end and an assortment of challenges you need to face. Enemies range from tiny shadow-wielding swords that deflect your arsenal of fireballs, shadow knights, skeletons, and various monstrosities that look like monsters straight out of your nightmares.
Dealing with these enemies is quite fun, considering they have different attack patterns, and they don’t shy away from massing toward you with no regard for self-preservation. The bosses are ridiculously difficult to deal with, mostly because they specialize in AoE attacks, making you jump and dodge while you shoot.
Speaking of shooting, your primary weapon in Cloaks and Capes is your ability to shoot fireballs. At first, you’ll only be able to fire off normal ones, but as you progress, you’ll be able to purchase powerups from the Elder’s store that you can access at any time on the menus. These can dramatically change how you play, and they can give you an advantage in battle. These include turning your fireballs into piercing rounds, making them “fatter”, while some change the trajectory. Apart from changing the way you fight, you can also change the way you move, like adding in a triple jump and more nuances to how you dash. This part of the game is reasonably refined and gives you many options in picking a play style.
Community
Cloaks and Capes is a single-player game. However, the devs have a Discord server, which is perfect if you’d like to get in touch with them and your fellow players.
Graphics/Sound
In terms of presentation, Cloaks and Capes captures that retro and outdated feel without looking clunky or unpleasant. The background art and overall presentation remind me of mid-90s arcade games, giving a pinch of nostalgia. The developers nailed the aesthetic and the dark fantasy theme they're going for. The same can be said about the sound design, which sounds dated, making it sync well with the visuals.
Conclusion
Cloaks and Capes is a fantastic game, delivering an action-packed roguelike platforming experience. Though it’s a relatively straightforward game, it provides a lot of depth thanks to its robust upgrade system and multifaceted gameplay. Don’t be put off by the tiny number of reviews on Steam - it deserves a place in your gaming library, and even if it is relatively short, the time you’ll spend with it will be worthwhile.
