Summary

Someone kidnapped a poor young girl named Charlotte May… and in your very own neighborhood too! In Conway: Disappearance at Dahlia View, you, playing as a wheelchair-bound retired private eye, decided to dust off your coat so to speak, and investigate the disappearance of the little girl. Talk to neighbors, observe their behavior, and conduct some sleuthing of your own, all in hopes of tracking down the missing girl before it’s too late!

Plotline

In this game, you play as Conway himself, a wheelchair-bound retired private investigator who’s living out his golden years in the relatively quiet and sleepy neighborhood of Dahlia View… that is until a young girl named Charlotte May was whisked away by some mysterious abductor, most likely by someone she knew, in the middle of the night.

After meeting with the distraught single father, you’ve decided to take it upon yourself to investigate the matter and hopefully, rescue her before it is too late.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Conway: Disappearance at Dahlia View can be likened to a point-and-click adventure namely because the game will have you scour various locations for clues that might help with your case. You may need to move items away to reveal hidden objects that serve as important clues to solving the mystery.

From time to time, you’ll also need to use Conway’s trusty camera to capture pieces of evidence or to use as binoculars to spy on neighbors showing suspicious behaviors. With the photos in hand, you can then put them up on the evidence board and try to connect them together to form a clearer picture of the case.

In the event where you need a refresher as to what to do next, the game offers a notepad where you can track your objectives.

As a private investigator, you’ll be expected to talk to people and conduct your investigation discretely. However, the game is a bit linear here since you don’t get to choose what Conway says. Instead, whenever the characters are talking, you can simply just sit back and relax, and just enjoy the story.

If you’re into collecting things, you’ll be delighted to know that there are vintage stamps cleverly hidden around each area for you to find and add to your collection. They aren’t necessary for the story and only function as fun collectibles.

There’s also a little bonus here that I’ve noticed. While you’re watching your neighbors through the lens of your camera, you can actually move away from the obvious focus of the story to look at other stuff, such as - spoiler alert! - seeing the landlord post an eviction notice on another person’s door and having Conway comment something about it.

Unfortunately, the game has some bugs which can be sometimes game-breaking considering that the game only has one save file. If the part with the bug had overwritten the previously saved file, then your saved file is useless.

Not to mention, due to the camera angle used here and perhaps the fact that Conway is using a wheelchair, the controls can end up feeling a bit awkward as you keep bumping Conway into stationary objects. It’s not a huge issue but I thought it’s enough of a bother sometimes to mention it here.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics here are fantastic, though I’m not a huge fan of its isometric-like design despite completely seeing how well it plays into the gameplay. However, the best part about the game is definitely its incredible voice acting which helps a lot in conveying its story across and providing the game with much-needed immersion. Conway’s voice is just so soothing to listen to as well.

Conclusion

If you’re into investigative point-and-clicks with a great mystery to solve, Conway: Disappearance at Dahlia View is one game you’ll want to check out. In this game, you’ll be expected to scour various locations for clues, besides talking to them in hopes that they might slip up, and taking photos of potential pieces of evidence along the way. Although the cost of the game can be a bit on the higher end especially when the game offers no replayability, its captivating storytelling and immersive gameplay might just be enough to justify the price tag.
