Gameplay
Once you get the game ready, you can straightaway head into battle by checking out the server browser for a game you’d like to join. Counter Strike Nexon: Zombies offers plenty of game modes for you to enjoy, some of which are ranked while others aren’t. There are the usual game modes, such as team deathmatch, bomb planting and defusing, and co-op games where you get to train with bots, but what’s unique about this game is its thrilling zombie-inclusive game modes, like zombie scenario, zombie shelter, and zombie hero.
In zombie hero for example, a random player will be selected to be the first zombie once the game starts in earnest. The objective of the game is for the zombie to infect all the human players while the humans should do their very best to not get infected by the zombies. If the human team has a minimum of 1 surviving member, the zombies will lose and the humans will win.
The fun part about zombies in this game is due to the zombie variation available. Different zombies have different abilities and each zombie can have up to 4 different abilities at a time. For instance, light zombies usually have the sprint ability or invisibility (for a short period of time) while heavier and bulkier zombies may have the charge ability instead. There is even a game mode where you’ll face down a team of zombies with your fellow players... a lot like Left for Dead but in a Counter-Strike setting.
You can also create your own ideal match via custom game modes that allow you to tweak the many parameters of a game to your liking. You can choose to restrict the weapons players can use in your match, a maximum number of players, the win objective, maximum game time, round time and many more. Creating new matches is free in Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies, unlike some other MMOFPS games, so do feel free to utilize these match customization tools to design and create your own matches!
Maps, as mentioned, are similar to what Counter-Strike has. However, there are certain maps where there are areas that are absolutely pitch-black. In these places, having a weapon that has a flashlight attached would be beneficial. This is because zombies, unlike humans, have some form of night vision. In fact, even if you do have a flashlight, it is a very bad idea to hide in the dark and hoping no passing zombie will spot you.
The core element of MMO shooter games like Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies is, without a doubt, your loadouts. In this game, you are allowed to bring along a primary weapon, which can range from shotguns to SMGs, a secondary weapon or pistol, a melee weapon, and a grenade. You can save multiple loadouts and you can switch between these loadouts at the respawn screen.
In terms of weapon variety, Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies has quite a lot to offer. Besides the shotguns, pistols, and SMGs, there are also assault rifles, like AK-47, FAMAS, and Galil; sniper rifles, machine guns like K3. The costs for the guns are pretty reasonable, but only for the temporary versions. Temporary guns have expiry dates and will disappear from your inventory after that specified date.
In addition to getting guns from the shop, you can also craft your own weapons via this game’s unique crafting system. To craft a weapon, you’ll need 2 types of materials – combat blueprints and durables (durability metals). Combat blueprints will determine what kind of weapon you get from crafting while the durables will indicate how long your crafted weapon will stay in your inventory. Blueprints and durables are separated into 6 different grades, and by using higher grade materials, you’ll have a higher success rate of getting a weapon with a longer durability crafted.
To get a higher grade material, you can run 3 of the same grade material through the synthesis machine. You can use fewer materials (instead of 3) or use different grade materials but by doing so, you’ll be harming your chances of getting a good grade material. You can also attempt to boost your chances by adding in a “lucky craft” recipe. There is even a recyclable craft recipe that you can use to give you a chance to get back 1 of the 2 crafting materials if you fail. You can generally obtain blueprints, durables and recipes via completed special or daily missions, from zombie loot boxes or from disassembling unneeded items.
Interestingly, you can also enhance your weapons by buying enhancement materials from the shop and placing them into the enhancement machine. There’s a 50% of success and failure, but if you succeed, your weapon’s level will increase by 1, which in turn boosts up your weapon’s attributes, including damage, the rate of fire, recoil, accuracy, ammo, and portability. In addition to weapon skins and enhancement, there are even plenty of customization options for your character in Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies such as tattoo, costumes, and character classes (a.k.a. character skins).
Community
The players in Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies band together into groups of “families” (clans). Some families are pretty active in the game and frequently organize clan vs clan matches. The Steam community for this game is very friendly and helpful to the newbies. They have written plenty of guides to help new players out and if you have any questions, they are more than happy to be of assistance.
Graphics/ Sound
The graphics in Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies are of similar quality as to other MMO shooter games like Combat Arms or S.K.I.L.L. 2. It is not great but it’s not too bad either. The animations may seem a bit on the low end as well, but due to this, the game is not at all taxing on your computer. In terms of sound, there isn’t any background music, but there are plenty of audio cues in-game, such as the sounds of gunfire, footsteps or the endless zombie moaning. These cues do play their role in helping you being situationally-aware of your surroundings.
Conclusion
All in all, Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies is pretty fun and exciting MMOFPS game that has successfully merged the popular MMOFPS game, Counter-Strike, with zombies. The game offers plenty of game modes and maps for you to enjoy. There are a lot of weapons for you to buy and use as well, and that’s not including those weapons that you can craft. Don’t forget to add enhancements to your weapons to give yourself an advantage in combat. If you can’t get enough of Counter-Strike or zombie games, Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies is definitely a game you should try! Play it now!
