Gameplay
Cradle of Rome 2 provides 3 different game modes for you to choose from, namely adventure mode (the default mode), tourney mode and blitz mode. In adventure mode, you’ll be gathering resources by playing match-3 games in order to establish the city of Rome. For tourney mode, you’ll be attempting to surpass the best scores on each of the leaderboards for all 40 levels of match-3 games available to earn awesome medals. Depending on how you perform, you’ll earn a bronze, silver or a gold medal. To unlock this game mode though, you’ll first need to obtain at least 500 thousand accumulative points in adventure mode.
To unlock the blitz mode, you’ll need to complete the adventure mode first. For this game mode, you’ll be playing match-3 games after match-3 games starting from level 1. The games are timed and the timer will only decrease when you hesitate. How many levels do you think can you complete before the timer goes out? As you may have noticed, all of the games in Cradle of Rome 2 are timed, which is perfect for players who crave the rush of a fast-paced game. Unfortunately though, the game doesn’t provide a more relaxative game mode.
That being said, are you ready to start the construction process? Awesome! To begin, you’ll need to gather some resources first. Resources in this game generally consist of gold, food, and supplies. To get them, you’ll need to swap to match 3 or more adjacent specific tiles together. For instance, to obtain gold, you’ll need to match up gold or silver coins. Naturally, gold coins will earn you more gold than silver coins (5 times as much), thus, if you have to choose between matching a row of 3 gold or silver coins, you should always go with the gold option.
Food, on the other hand, can be gathered by matching up water buckets. Each water bucket provides 3 units of food, but as you progress in the game (and have set up your hunting lodge), you’ll gain access to a much better “food source”, namely meat, which will give you 4 units of food per match. For supplies, you can get them by matching lumber or stone. Stones provide more supplies than lumber though. There is also a special tile, named the super arrow, which you can obtain by matching 5 tiles together. When swapped, this special tile will explode, resulting in the removal of nearby tiles.
The match-3 games in Cradle of Rome 2 are timed. You are given 5 minutes to complete the tasks assigned in the game and this may sound simple enough as 5 minutes is a rather long period of time. However, as you move on to the much tougher levels, the time limit doesn’t change, making the subsequent games a lot harder than they look. Not to mention, the game also spices things up with a variety of obstacles such as chains and marble tiles. To clear chains which lock the tiles in place, you’ll need to match the resources underneath them. For blue marble tiles, you’ll need to match over them to clear them off the board. There are also green marble tiles that will require two matches to remove.
Sad but true, there will be times when you are not at your best and due to this, you’ve failed a level. Every unsuccessful level will cost you 1 life, and to begin with, you have 3 of them. They will recharge themselves over time though, so don’t worry. You can increase the maximum number of lives you get by reaching the accumulative score points milestones set by the game.
Naturally, you would want to avoid losing any lives if possible and thus, the game provides you with a nice range of power-ups, such as the hammer and the bomb. However, uniquely, to obtain these power-ups, you don’t need to spend your hard-earned gold or any of your other resources to purchase them. Instead, you can earn it by matching up hammer or bomb tiles. Each match will fill up the power-up meter of the respective power-ups and once filled, you can then use it whenever you wish. The hammer allows you to remove a tile from the board while the bomb will vaporize all tiles within a 4x4 radius around it.
With sufficient resources at hand, you can then obtain the necessary blueprints to start the construction process. Blueprints can be purchased with resources, and once bought, you’ll need to solve a mini-puzzle before you can actually get the blueprint itself. Most puzzles are logic-based puzzles, such as combining pieces of the blueprint together like a jigsaw puzzle, match-2/ pairs games, and rearranging tiles by moving them around to form the complete blueprint. If puzzles aren’t your thing, don’t worry! You can choose to skip them once the skip button is fully charged up.

Graphics/ Sound
The graphics in the game is acceptable but not particularly colorful or beautiful unlike the other much more cartoony and brightly-colored games. It may look a bit dated for some. Music-wise, the game has a selection of very pleasant and soothing music that accompanies you as you play.
