Your goal is to expand, build and develop your kingdom until you vanquish all of your enemies, but your rivals will be doing the same thing, so ready your best strategies and outsmart your enemies in 75 different levels with pre-generated maps in the game.
Plotline
There are no major story plots found in Crown and Council, as the game was originally a Game Jam project; an annual game making contest where participants are task to create a game from scratch within two days. The only plot that described the game is that is it more of a geopolitical drama where you have a goal to conquer the entire region and vanquish any rival kingdoms.
Gameplay
Crown and Council has a traditional strategy board game element where players will take turns against AI opponents on performing their tasks. Each turn lets players spend gold to perform actions, from capturing adjacent lands to fortifying a fortress or settling an establishment, players will be able to earn gold based on the number of occupied lands in the map, so the more lands you occupied, the bigger your gold earning will become. You can find Mines scattered around the map where it has a chance of giving 8 gold when you occupy any land with a Mine.
There are different actions found in the game, and each has different gold costs. Occupying an adjacent space will require you to create an army with a 1 gold cost, all lands that you captured will also be open for any invaders. Occupied areas can be fortified with a Keep that will cost you 2 gold, but this will increase the defense of your occupied lands from invaders. Creating a Fleet will let you capture lands that are outside of your continent or island and will cost 4 gold and creating a Town for 2 gold lets you earn double the amount from the occupied space.
Depending on the available you have at the start of your turn, you may need to prepare a better approach in choosing which action you should prioritize, as you may skip on occupying lands from other islands and focusing on nearby lands might be a better strategy. Because one wrong approach may affect the flow of your gold once enemies take their turns and prepared a better course of action.
Occupying lands can be complicated, as not all areas can be captured successfully. There are some probabilities where certain lands will have a higher chance of being capture, most of these are found on neutral lands, however lands within the enemy territory has a probability of failing when capturing, while lands with Fort have a lower success rate as it will require more attempts to successfully topple the Fort down. But upgrading your attack units will increase its success rate.
Another interesting feature in Crown and Council is the map events. There are two known map events; Plague and Rebellion, at the start of every turn, there is a high chance for a map event to be triggered. The Plague events will affect a certain land with a town being established, what happened is that once a Plague event is triggered, the affected Town unit will be destroyed, leaving the occupied land open for any potential attacks. The Rebellion event is somewhat complicated as it will be triggered if the affected player occupied more than 20% of the total lands in the map. Once it gets triggered a random occupied land will become neutral regardless of what unit was constructed on it.
Community
The game is purely an offline game, so there are no ways of playing the game with other players online. Crown and Council can be played as a local multiplayer, however unlocking this feature will be tricky, as you will need to access the debug mode by typing ‘wow’ in the game. With the lack of an online feature, there are few players who are dedicated on building a community for Crown and Council, but since this was just a Game Jam project, the community is very small as there are no expected game updates for this game.
Graphics/ Sounds
Crown and Council has created with a simpler art design, focusing on an 8-bit-esque design that is both simple and eye candy. It is also possible that since this is a Game Jam project, the team that developed the project focused on simplified visuals to give them more time to complete the project. Sound effects also has that 8-bit feel. Unfortunately the background only has one track and it seems to be looping nonstop after a minute of playing.
Conclusion
Crown and Council is merely a simple yet fun strategy game, it has a potential to become a better game if the developers decided to continue enhancing it. The mechanics are simple enough for everyone to enjoy and it would have been nice if there is an online multiplayer feature added for a longer game lifespan. If you want something simple just to pass some time, you may want to try out Crown and Council.
