Summary
Along with the announcement that Days Gone is heading to Steam, and Epic Games came the news that it’ll be part of the PlayStation Plus free games lineup. Having played the game before, I was stoked to try it out again and go through Deacon St. John’s journey.
Days Gone is a flawed, yet fun and emotional experience made with a lot of love by Sony’s Bend Studio. As Deacon, you’ll get to explore the Freaker-infested rural areas of the devastated state of Oregon filled with lush forests, abandoned towns, and rocky mountains. It felt like a diamond in the rough due to the many bugs and issues when it first came out. However, with constant improvements and free updates, it’s undoubtedly one of PlayStation’s must-play creations.
So, is Days Gone worth a shot, and should you hop on a bike as Deacon? Let’s check out if it’s worth downloading?
Plotline
Without diving deep into spoilers, the world in Days Gone is entirely ravaged by the Freaker Virus, a pathogen capable of causing mutations to humans, turning them into rabid beings with enhanced strength and speed. So yes, these aren’t the slow undead beings like in Resident Evil: Freakers are fully alive and aggressively sprint towards you. You’ll strap on the dirt-covered boots of Deacon St. John, a biker doing runs and bounty hunts for several camps with his friend, Boozer. Though Deek is just trying to get by, his ultimate goal is to find out what happened to his wife on the night of a significant outbreak.
Gameplay
There’s a lot to dive into in Days Gone, although the main appeal is, of course, fighting Freakers. To aid in this endeavor, you’ll have weapons ranging from the unbreakable boot knife to assault rifles, LMGs, crossbows, and snipers. Meanwhile, you can also pick up baseball bats and 2x4s and craft them to make them more lethal. Most importantly, you can utilize Molotov cocktails and use explosives like frag grenades and elements in the environment like fuel trucks and tanks full of gas. Plus, flashbangs can momentarily stun enemies, and attractors (audio devices) can lead Freakers to areas you’d want them to be. Apart from the infected, you have to deal with random bandits and drifters and the fearsome Rippers, who somehow worship the infected.
The gameplay revolves around performing and finishing quests for various camps scattered in the countryside, like Copeland’s camp and Tucker’s. These quests involve hunting for bounties which will include frantic motorcycle chases or storming a bandit stronghold. Completing these quests (and those in the overworld) earn you credits and trust, which will enable Deacon to purchase higher-tier gear and supplies. There’s also an RPG mechanic involving skill points you can spend to give Deacon more abilities that will provide him an edge in combat.
An integral part of the gameplay involves riding and taking care of your motorbike. You’ll need to upgrade it in various camps to increase speed, durability and add in a nitrous function. Moreover, fuel is in the equation: you need to fill the tank to fast travel and get out of dangerous situations. Plus, you need to watch its condition and repair it with scrap if you have to.
Now for the main event: the Freakers. Days Gone’s infected beings are incredibly lethal, especially in large groups and even more so when dealing with a horde. This is why you need to have enough gear, bullets, explosives, and other necessities before you visit one of the mass grave sites and caves. One of the best parts is planning your approach. Usually, the sites hosting these hordes have explosive barrels, traps, and chokepoints you can use to slow Freakers down as you’re being chased. You can then unleash a hail of bullets from your LMG or burn them with a Molotov. Finally, note that there other types of Freakers, from a powerful Breaker to an infected bear known as a Rager.
Graphics/Sound
Days Gone’s visuals and voice acting does not get enough love. Sam Witwer was fantastic as Deacon, and his rendition, especially when commenting after every Oregon Free Radio program. He, and the rest of the cast, from Boozer, Iron Mike, Rikki, and the militia guys, gave fantastic performances.
Days Gone’s world is fantastic. Roads are full of abandoned cars, while uninhabited buildings, and those infested with Freakers, are full of detail. Everything checks out and screams “post-apocalyptic”: everything is in disarray, from Nero checkpoints to abandoned homes. However, the game also showcased Oregon’s beauty. It’s a beautiful world, which would have been a joy to explore if not for the countless Freakers, animals, and drifters wanting to take you out.
The game runs pretty well on a base PS4, and I’m sure it’ll do so even better if you buy the PC version.
Conclusion
Overall, Days Gone is one of the most underrated games today, and its current state is exponentially better than in release. Deacon’s adventure and quest to reunite with his wife is one that you have to undertake, and its dangerous world is undoubtedly a place you have to be in.
