Summary

Digimon Master Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that is also based on the popular Digimon anime and game franchise. Though it features a lot of the creatures from the franchise, it features an original story with new characters, it also uses a gameplay mechanic that is inspired in the recent Digimon games where you can collect other Digimons and evolve it into better creatures.

Plotline

Featuring a new story with new characters, Digimon Masters Online tells the world where it is overrun by digital beings called Digimon, and they all came from the Digital World parallel to the planet earth by exists on human computer networks. To control the rampant population of the Digimons on earth, a group called Digimon Data Squad was created to help control the Digimons and prevent any renegade Digimons from harming civilians.

Gameplay

Playing Digimon Masters Online feels like your standard MMORPG, but instead of your avatar becoming powerful, your pets or called Digimons in the game will progress as you train them further. It has the standard game mechanics of a standard MMORPG but added with evolution elements where you are encouraged to collect more Digimons.

Starting the game will let choose from the four protagonists, each of them features different appearances but does not have any significant changes to the gameplay or storyline. Unfortunately, there is no cosmetic options to change their appearance, but you can change their costumes from items found in quest rewards or in the item mall.

The controls are similar to popular MMORPGs, you control your avatar with the WASD keys, there will be no option to use the mouse in pointing your avatar to the selected direction like in some MMORPG and there is also no jump function. Shortcuts on the other stat windows are easy to remember, such as ‘I’ for inventory and ‘C’ for the Tamer character sheet. The interface feels flat as the design and colors are very bright, the fonts used on the system message screen can be difficult to read especially when the game is set on a higher resolution.

Combat works like any standard game but with some few exceptions, instead of your avatar attacking, it will be your Digimon who does all the battle for you. You issue a command to your digital companion by selecting an enemy Digimon and engage it, you can order your Digimon to use its special abilities with the hotkeys on screen. As your Digimon increases its level, it can unlock new skills to dish off massive damage. There are different attributes for each Digimon and all of them have their strengths and weaknesses, it can be compared that of a rock-paper-scissors method by with more varieties so be sure to bring a well-balanced Digimon line-up when adventuring.

You can collect more Digimons by obtaining eggs throughout your journey, you can hatch these eggs at the incubator and combined with some DATA chips, the more DATA chips you provided, and the more chances the new Digimon will be powerful. But do take note that you can only give a maximum of 5 DATA chips and a minimum of 3, however there are chances that the egg might break at the third instalment of the DATA chip and you lose the egg.

You can enhance your Digimons by using special chips on them to increase their stats, as you cannot increase stats from the get go when they level up. Evolving your Digimons that can be done once they reached certain levels and other Digimons may require key items to activate its evolution. Evolved forms are only temporary but these provide your Digimon with increased stats and powerful skills, their evolved form will disappear when your Soul points has depleted.

Quests are similar to standard MMORPGs. You take on main quests to progress through the story or complete side quests and errands to quickly level up and earn other useful items. The objectives are very standard, from the usual defeat a number of enemies or pick up a certain amount of quest items up to the talk to NPC A and B. But once you reached higher levels, the quest objectives will be larger and could take more time to complete it, but in return this also means better rewards.

Community

There are some active players roaming around Digimon Master Online and that is a good thing as it helps new players to get around the game and meet. You can form guilds with other players and help each other in completing quests or beating tough bosses in later levels, and this is also the best method to socialize with fellow players.

Graphics/ Sound

The game uses cell-shaded graphics to mimic that anime feel of the Digimon anime series, though the graphics may be dated, the cell-shaded visuals help make it look appealing even at this age. The music features a lot of upbeat tunes, as majority of it are more into pop and jpop tunes that is welcome to younger audiences.

Conclusion

Digimon Masters Online is a fun game but it feels like any typical MMORPGs... except with loads of digimon which you can tame, making the game more engaging as players will get hooked into collecting as many as they can (much like in Pokemon Go). So, if you are into classic MMORPGs with digital monster-collecting aspect, you are going to enjoy Digimon Masters Online. Try it now!
