Summary

Dreamfields is a unique farming simulation game that happens inside a dream world of a magical forest. Inside your dream, you can plant different crops on your farm and ask the bears for help. Your harvest can make many things to sell in the market or collect to build different structures that grant you more resources. A farming game with an imaginative gameplay, Dreamfields might just be what dreams are made of.

Gameplay

When the game starts, you can select your character’s gender. You will have the option to change your character’s clothes later on. Once done, a brief walkthrough will provide you with your first bear to help you with your work. Bears come to your farm when you place a jar of raspberry jam on the ground. The jam is made from the cauldron, which needs a combination of raspberries, water and sugar to create the jam. Once the jam is created, it is added to your stock and will be ready to feed the bears again should they get hungry.

The bear can chop wood, mine rocks or collect harvest, but you’ll need to build certain structures first to unlock the last two tasks. For instance, for the bears to collect resources, you must first build a storage for those resources, such as a Forester’s Hut for storing harvest and other perishable resources. A Forester’s Hut is unlocked when you reach a certain level and you need to buy with gold. So during the first few stages of the game, your bears can only chop down trees to produce chopped wood or pine needles.

Now for the fun part: you can plant crops on a small area. The first plants that are available to you are raspberries, onions and rye. Planting raspberries first would be best since it’s needed to make raspberry jam which is what the bears eat. Each crop in the shop becomes available as you level up.
To learn which crop you need to plant, check out the Kitchen for recipes. The Kitchen provides you with various recipes that combine several crops and resources to create one piece of material. These materials can be sold or used to build other structures.

Other than selling crops, there are two things which generate gold: the Well, which also provides water and the Dragon. Click on them occasionally to collect the gold. These structures are already built when you start the game. The more precious currency in this game are called Lunar crystals, and these are awarded to you when you accomplish certain tasks. If you’re lucky, you’ll be rewarded with a deer, which grants you these crystals for a limited amount of time. Lunar crystals can also be used to speed up almost any work that’s in progress.

Your character’s energy comes from a material called Fantasy, and without this your character can’t accomplish a task. To keep getting Fantasy, you need to level up or check tasks that grant more Fantasy. You can also click on the floating yellow lanterns that pass over your farm to get a few units of Fantasy, along with a few gold coins and random items.

In addition to tasks that are listed on the left side of your screen, you can also get Lunar crystals and other rewards when completing Achievements. Achievements are milestones you’ve accomplished in your farm, such as planting 100 crops, collecting 50 grass, and so on. When you have enough gold, you can buy income-generating structures to help you earn more gold. The most basic one is the Red House, which will generate a modest amount of gold within 20 minutes.

There are dozens of structures that you can build from the Shop, and some are bought with gold and some with Lunar crystals. Some rare structures need to be found in another location before you can build it in your farm. To know more about each structure, hover your mouse over its image in the Shop. The descriptions can be a bit vague, so use your best judgment before making a purchase.
Your farm’s space is a bit crowded when you start, so you’ll need to clear a lot of trees and plants to make room for planting new crops. Making your character do this can easily wear down and empty his Fantasy, so it’s best to buy a resource building, like a Forester’s Hut so the bears can do all the work. When you have more empty land, you can plant more crops.

If you don’t know what to do while you wait for your crops to grow or your resources to generate, you can click on the lantern or any icon on the left to find a task that you can do in exchange for Lunar crystals, gold or Fantasy. These tasks are relatively easy to do and will prepare you for the next steps you need to take to grow your farm.

Ultimately, you will need to expand your land. You can do this by gathering a substantial amount of materials (and some friends to help), so it will take some time for you to do this. Also, you need to be in an advanced level to buy an expansion. If you don’t want to gather all materials, you can unlock the expansion with a sizable number of Lunar crystals. So you can either focus on getting each material needed, or earning enough Lunar crystals to buy more land.

Community

There is a social aspect to Dreamfields in a sense that you can add friends who play the game. You can send or ask for gifts and visit each other’s homes and collect gold from income-bearing structures.

Graphics/Sound

One of the best things about this game is its dedication to deliver stunningly beautiful graphics. The artwork comes straight out of a storybook, making it perfect for its surreal environment. The sound is nothing to write home about and could be better, but the images more than make up for it.

Conclusion

Dreamfields is one of the most unique farm simulation games of its time. Its artful presentation and creative twists to a simple farming game makes it an interesting world of endless discovery and possibilities. With dozens of crops, a long list of resources and the ability to combine them, this game makes anything possible. It truly is a dream to play, and you’ll soon be lost in this mesmerizing world of wonders.
