Gameplay
After signing up on Molehill Empire, you will be asked to follow the advice given by your very own garden gnome as he explains how the game works to you.
Let’s get started in your garden right away! As you can see, weeds have started spreading here lately, so find a free spot and plant your first carrots and lettuce (Don’t worry - as you level up, you’ll have access to more variety of crops)! To do so, click on the respective bottles of carrot and lettuce seeds on the shelf on your left and plant them on a free spot in your garden. Some crops may take up a bit more space than usual, but most of the time, each crop will only take up 1 plot of land.
Do remember to water the growing crops as well! You can do that by clicking on the watering can at the top menu bar and clicking on each plot of crop. Since watering does not cost you anything and will instead provide a nice little duration boost to your crops (meaning that it’ll reduce the duration you’ll need to wait before harvest), it’s always best to keep your plants watered.
Then, all you need to do is to wait till they are in full bloom before harvesting! To harvest, you’ll need to click on the sickle and subsequently, on the mature crops in your garden. The crops you’ve harvested can then be sold to prospective buyers who are queued patiently at the path at the bottom of your screen to buy some veggies or you could use them as seeds and replant them. Keeping a balance between selling and replanting is important to ensure that you can earn a nice income while having enough seeds to plant more (without needing to spend money to buy seeds from the shop).
How to sell your crops? Well, you’ll need to click on each of your customers to find out what he or she would like to buy and fulfill the order by collecting the required amount of crops. These small shoppers are a great way to make money. Serve them and you will get a reward! If you have plenty of extra crops that are not needed by your customers, you can still earn a nice profit by selling your crops to other players at the market place in town. You can usually sell for more money at the market place, but you’ll have to ensure that there’s a demand for it first.
While waiting for your crops to bloom though, you may want to burn those free times you have downtown! There are a few shops, a town hall, a market place as well as several other buildings in the small sleepy town called Green Valley. The shops here include the hardware shop that provides decorative items for you to place or construct at your garden, such as gazebo, fire pit, sandbox, path and fountain, as well as Brandolf’s farm whereby you can purchase more seeds. Although the selection of seeds is rather limited at the beginning, once you level up, you’ll unlock even more crop options. There are also other interesting buildings in Green Valley, including a town hall, whereby you can see the latest stats of your garden.
As you play the game, you’ll eventually run out of space and need to clear new land for planting. Land can be cleared for the in-game currency – plain and simple! Thankfully, there are no hidden ‘costs’, such as requiring you to have X number of neighbors, or anything like that. There are even achievements that you can earn too!
Community
Molehill Empire has a small but tight-knitted community of dedicated virtual gardeners. The players in this game usually band together into guilds, or more accurately, gardeners’ societies, in the game. This is to keep the solitary gardening life interesting! If you like, you could also head over to its forums or Facebook fan page to meet with some of your fellow players too!
Graphics/ Sound
Molehille Empire is a very old game and thus, it has some pretty old-school graphics. The top-down view the game provides doesn’t earn the game any extra points either. The entire game exudes a very rustic feeling. Furthermore, Molehill Empire does not contain any music or any sound effects as well! Thus, you can play your own music in the background or just enjoy the peaceful silence.
Conclusion
All in all, Molehill Empire is the sort of gardening/ farming game that strips games of this genre down to their essence, removing all the unnecessary bloatware, so to speak. This game is a rather refreshing take on the gardening/ farming games. In this game, you’ll be planting, watering and harvesting your vegetables in your garden with the help of your team of garden gnomes. Sell your harvest to customers or to other players alike! With money in your hands, you can then purchase decorative items to spruce up your garden! However, due to its top-down view as well as it very old-school appearance, many players may be deterred from playing the game. So, if you’re looking for a simple gardening or farming game and you don’t mind getting beautiful graphics as much, then Molehill Empire is a game you can try out! Play it today!
