Summary
Eternal Threads is a pretty incredible narrative adventure that is based on timeline manipulation. In this game, the timeline itself was corrupted at various critical points, resulting in the desolate world you live in today. One of these time points includes a tragic event that took the lives of six housemates at 14 West Park Road, Alderbeck. As one of the fixers sent to fix the corrupted time points, you are sent to this every location to alter the decisions of the inhabitants and hopefully make it so that everyone could survive the fire.
Plotline
The future is a bleak and dreary place, and the fate (and survival) of humanity is at stake.
Thankfully the scientists of that time period managed to identify the problem – corrupted points along the timeline - and invented the means to solve it – that’s right, time travel!
In this game, you are one of the trained “fixers” who are sent out to various corrupted time points along the timeline to hopefully identify specific corrupted events and change them, and your task? To alter the events at a house on 14 West Park Road, Alderbeck where the six housemates who lived there died (erroneously) due to a tragic fire.
With only 7 days’ worth of time on the clock to sift through, you’ll need to dive into the lives of Raquel, Tom, Neil, Linda, Ben, and Jenny, and help nudge them into the correct timeline that would save their lives whether by changing their decisions in potentially corrupted moments in time, or not.
Gameplay
Now, before you start, you’ll be given the option to choose between the shorter Abridged version where there are fewer events or the complete experience. Personally, considering that time constraint is actually a thing, I chose the Abridged version.
Now, in terms of the gameplay, if you approach Eternal Threads like a 3D visual novel – with superb voice acting, by the way, and some elements from “walking simulators”, then you’ll definitely not be disappointed.
The game will have you walk – or run – from one room to another to watch the string of events that happened in the house. There are two main ways you can view the events – you can choose a specific character in the timeline viewer and follow him/her only, or you can view all the events that happen chronologically regardless of the people involved.
As you view the various events that happen on the timeline, you’ll encounter potentially corrupted moments where a decision was made. You can then choose to alter it or keep it as it is. Every decision you make here will have consequences, sometimes immediately but oftentimes, later down the road, as new events will be unlocked while some existing ones will become locked. Some decisions are interconnected as well, so it can be tricky if you plan on watching all the events available in the game.
Ultimately, by changing only the necessary decisions, you should be able to help all six housemates survive the tragic fire in the end.
Interestingly enough, you may also learn how to gain access to locked areas in the game by watching an event where the location of the key was mentioned and shown. Unlocking new areas in the house will allow you to unlock new events that happened within those areas as well.
The timeline viewer here comes with many helpful tools to make it as easy as possible for you to change events. For instance, once a potentially corrupted point is discovered, you can then go back and easily alter the decision made either directly on the timeline via the timeline viewer while skipping all the dialogue, or while watching the event again.
You could also narrow down the scope of the timeline to only focus on one or a few characters, ignoring the rest. This is very helpful in cases where you’ve managed to save some of the characters but not the others, so you just wanted to focus on those who stayed dead at the end of the timeline.
Graphics/ Sound
Since you’ll be walking about in a charred house in the middle of the night, most of what you see is covered by the veil of night. That being said, the holographic projections here are fairly bright so it’s easy enough to see, despite being a bit grainy and with regular flickering – to think they would have developed better holographic technology by then! As mentioned, the voice acting here is simply superb. The voices really bring each of the characters to life.
Conclusion
Despite a slow start, Eternal Threads offers a 3D look at a gripping story filled with excellent plot twists and interesting, relatable characters. Thanks to the convenient timeline viewer, the game also gives players a chance to go back and manipulate the timeline; to right a wrong – well, multiple ones – just so they could save all six housemates from a fatal end and fix the current timeline.
