Summary
Apparently, October 2018 is a lucky month for PlayStation Plus users, thanks to Friday the 13th being part of the free games lineup. After all, it fits the season: Halloween is nearly upon us, and spooks and scares Jason Voorhees provides worth experiencing. Though its inclusion into the mix is rather questionable due to the nearly similar Dead by Daylight being offered last month, it provides a better and whole new gameplay experience that even non-horror fans would love to undergo.
Like its name suggests, Friday the 13th is a game that is faithful to the movies. The maps are based off the locations in the films and the same can be said about the different versions of Jason. The game basically pits seven counselors against the brutish serial killer. The former’s goal is to survive through a variety of means, whether by escaping or by taking Jason down. Meanwhile, the latter's goal is quite straightforward: kill every counselor on the map.
Plotline
Though the films are known for their intriguing storylines, a plot is nonexistent in the game. You’ll basically drop into a lobby, be transported to one of the locations and a certain timeline in the film series, and start playing. Tommy Jarvis, a character in the films and Jason’s arch-nemesis, is in the game. Meanwhile, the counselors are original characters with little resemblance to those on the films. Their backgrounds, stats, and different lore are put into detail in the menus, alongside the different versions of Jason (like the sackhead version which was before he put on the famous hockey mask).
Gameplay
Friday the 13th’s gameplay loop is fairly straightforward. You will join a lobby with eight other players and as soon as everyone connects to the game, a Jason will be randomly selected from the cast. So yes, you have a one in eight chances to become Jason in every session you start with. Regardless if you play as the hunter or the counselors though, you’ll still be treated to a lot of fun.
The counselors’ goal is to survive, whether by escaping or through killing Jason, which is not an easy feat. They can escape by car, through gathering the necessary car parts scattered across the map like car keys, battery, and a can full of gas. Once the car is repaired through a series of minigames (if you mess up even once, Jason will be able to locate you), counselors can get in and drive away to escape the camp. Another option is to repair the phone box and call the police who arrive after a set point, or Tommy Jarvis who is capable of defeating Jason.
Counselors can pick up items to help them survive. These range from a map, first-aid sprays, and weapons like axes, baseball bats, and even a flare gun. Moreover, they can also set traps, hide under beds and closets, as well as leap through windows to make quick escapes. It’s also important to note that each counselor has different stats. For example, Vanessa Jones can run quickly but can easily be spooked due to her low composure, while A.J. Mason can hide from Jason in plain sight due to her high stealth stat,. Be sure to read up their profiles before making a choice so you can safely pick the one that suits your overall play style.
Meanwhile, playing as Jason is a lot of fun. The power you have over the counselors is just amazing: you can easily poke fun by letting them go and even intentionally pass by their hiding places. There are many Jason types and all of which are based on the film. You will have access Jason’s numerous skills that can let you take out the counselors, ranging from a teleport-like “morph” skill and ones that can easily let you track them. In addition, you will also unlock cinematic kills which are extremely gory executions as you progress and level up.
Community
Though Friday the 13th can be played in single player, its appeal is mostly on the multiplayer aspect. Cooperation and teamwork is needed if you want both you and your teammates to survive and escape. Thankfully, you can easily play with your friends and coordinate with teammates by using in-game voice chat. Be careful though, since Jason can hear you on the mic and learn what your plans are. The game has an official wiki and a Reddit community where you can interact with other players and learn new tips and ways to improve the way you play.
Graphics/Sound
In terms of graphics and presentation, Friday the 13th impresses thanks to the detailed environments and outstanding voice acting. The eerie atmosphere of the camps can spook anyone (though the scare factor becomes easier to deal with as you play more) and when the characters speak, you can clearly feel the fear in their voices. Unfortunately, there are some bizarre texture problems and occasional framerate drops. However, these are more of a nuisance and not game-breaking at all.
Conclusion
Friday the 13th is a game you would want to dive into and play with your friends. It’s something you would definitely play for a long time, though it needs to solve its server issues if it wants to retain its player-base. Whether you’re a fan of the films or not, the game provides fun and unforgettable moments. It is a must download for PlayStation Plus users and is a perfect game to play during a Halloween party.
