Summary
If you haven’t played any of the Frog Detective games before, then it’s probably something you might want to add to your video game library.
Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery is a charming, whimsical, and quirky take on detective video games. It’s like a Sherlock Holmes game, just made safe for general audiences and kindergarteners. As an adult, it may be a little difficult to find enjoyment in such a brightly-colored kid-centric experience, but overall, it’s a well-made experience complete with well-written dialogue, funny and corny jokes, and good gameplay perfect for all ages.
Now available on the Switch, is this first-person mystery adventure something you want to try? Let’s check out what it has to offer:
Plotline
Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery puts you in the webbed feet of the titular character. As an amphibian investigator, your task is to go on a journey across three locations with three different acts where you meet quirky animal characters. Don’t be distracted by their goofy demeanor, though; some of these colorful personalities could be the suspects!
Don’t expect anything serious to come out of Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery’s three arcs. Though it gives a vibe comparable to something akin to LA Noire and Sherlock Holmes (especially the music), the gameplay and overall atmosphere are closely comparable to what toddlers dive into. As the chief amphibian detective, you’ll interrogate suspects, look for clues, make notes, and unravel a rather straightforward web of mysteries.
There are three cases which are The Haunted Island, The Case of the Invisible Wizard, and Corruption at Cowboy County. The first case, The Haunted Island, has you help a sloth bothered by scary nighttime sounds, while the second, The Case of the Invisible Wizard, has you search the Warlock Woods to find a missing wizard. Finally, the third case, which is Corruption at Cowboy Country, puts you in a desert mystery about a town not having its own sheriff.
Gameplay
Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery’s gameplay is relatively straightforward. It’s a first-person adventure, and most of the time, you’ll walk across various locales, locating items, conversing with characters, and trading in items. Although it heavily relies on the mystery narrative, there’s really nothing stress-inducing here; it’s a relatively easy game to play, and everything feels quite intuitive. You will not get aimlessly lost, although a sharp eye is required occasionally.
You’ll play as the titular Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery. The journey centers around solving various cases, investigating what seems to be a haunted island, or looking for a wizard in plain sight. If you’re looking for anything deep, though, this isn’t the right game - most mysteries are about whimsical entertainment. It won’t rack your brains, and you’ll mostly go along for a nice, stress-free ride.
Like a real investigator, you will be armed with a magnifying glass in Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery. This tool will aid you in environmental exploration; it does little but magnify objects, enabling you to see things better. As you progress through the three arcs, you will be introduced to new mechanics. The 2nd act introduces a notebook that documents information about the characters you meet, helping you track what is happening. Meanwhile, the third act is set in an expansive desert environment. Due to the larger area, the game provides you with a scooter, enabling you to head over to various places relatively quickly.
Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery is a relatively short game - it takes just a couple of hours to complete. It’s stress-free, and most of the time, you’ll just have to let the narrative play out. In a way, it’s a chill game and perfect if you’re looking for anything that doesn’t take a lot of effort to play.
Graphics/Sound
Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery has kid-friendly graphics with an art style and visuals comparable to a children’s art book. The character design is sublime - most people you’ll encounter have cute and whimsical visuals. The music has some semblance of mystery, and on some occasions, it may feel a little out of place. Regardless, everything looks fantastic on the Nintendo Switch.
Conclusion
Overall, Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery is a game geared towards a younger audience and for players seeking a stress-free game. With silly characters, well-written funny dialogue, and stress-free gameplay, it’s something you definitely need to add to your Nintendo Switch library.
