Summary

The card game space is rather saturated today, with games like Hearthstone, Magic the Gathering, and old favorite Yu-Gi-Oh dominating the space. Each game has its unique characteristics and gameplay aspects that set them apart from the rest of the cast.

Gods Unchained is no different. By that, we mean it manages to set itself from others via being a play to earn game. Yes, it supports cryptocurrency, and by making cards by repeatedly playing and winning, you can earn real money. Moreover, it emphasizes players own their cards, so they’re free to sell, trade, and buy new ones whenever they wish and whatever the means.

However, we’re not here to make money or talk about getting rich via Gods Unchained. Instead, we’re here to discuss whether it’s fun or otherwise and how it compares to other popular CCGs. Before you hit the download button, let’s check out what it has to offer:

Gameplay

Gods Unchained’s gameplay is relatively in the same boat compared to its peers, just with its own unique elements.

There are a total of six gods, each with its own set of abilities and cards that fit its theme. For example, the God of War, Auron has creature cards with warriors while Elyrian, the God of Magic, uses witches and warlocks. The same can be said about spell and relic cards, which also follow the theme of the god they belong to. With that said, you’ll step into battle with a deck of 30 cards each, and you’ll have the option to build your own or create one from scratch.

The arena battles use turn-based mechanics, with you and your opponent taking turns setting up cards, activating spells, and attacking using your creatures. You’ll have a certain amount of mana to spend on cards or triggering god abilities (once per game), and it increases over time during the match. Games usually start slow and pick up at the latter end, given that with more mana, players will be able to unleash more powerful cards. However, how long a game goes on depends on how quickly you can decimate your opponent’s god’s HP, set at 30.

There are many elements to consider and jargon to learn in Gods Unchained. We highly recommend understanding and memorizing in-game mechanics like the special cards and terms like ‘frontline,’ ‘flank,’ ‘burn,’ and ‘twin strike.’ Knowing the full extent of your cards’ capabilities will help you get far into the leaderboards.

You can workshop or build your original deck in Gods Unchained. You can obtain new ones as you play or simply buy what you need from the in-game market. It can get a bit tricky, and you may spend countless hours perfecting your deck. This is where the game modes come in. You can try using them in a battle against AI opponents, and if you’re relatively confident in it, you can try the ranked constructed, the ranked mode in the game. There are also other modes like:

- Quick sealed where you receive 50 random cards from where you can construct a deck of 30 and then play.

- Quick draft where you can draft cards to your deck then play.

There’s also an unranked constructed mode where you try out constructed decks against other players without impacting your standing.

Gods Unchained is free to play, although there’s an option to purchase starter packs at different prices. However, these only contain cards of varying rarity levels, not full decks. In a way, this suggests that these packs focus solely on the game’s blockchain and cryptocurrency aspect since these cards’ prices will gradually rise.

Community

Although you can easily find a match in Gods Unchained, the game doesn’t have a huge following online. However, it has passionate communities on Discord and Reddit, and if you’re planning to enter the blockchain market, there are lots of people buying and selling. Moreover, if you need help with the game, you’ll also find a sufficient number of tutorials and guides online.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Gods Unchained looks fantastic. The user interface, which is a massive deal in creating a card game, is extremely intuitive. If you’ve played another CCG before, you’ll feel right at home. Meanwhile, the fantasy and medieval aesthetic it provides excels as well, although we can safely say it was inspired mostly by its peers. Nevertheless, the card art and arena animations are a joy to experience, highly comparable to more established games.

Conclusion

Overall, Gods Unchained is an excellent card game that holds up well compared to its peers in the CCG space. Though most of its gameplay feels familiar, it does well enough to set itself apart. The cryptocurrency aspect is being sold as a revolutionary aspect, being the first of its kind. However, it’s not THE part of the game you’ll probably spend a lot of time on unless you’re playing intending to earn.

So, if you’re looking for a CCG that is fun and worth getting into, Gods Unchained is just that.
