Plotline
A new galaxy and a new beginning - humanity had thought they could finally enjoy a life of peace and prosperity… that is until the Gorox attacked. The reconstruction process has just begun and it is up you to bring the fight to the Gorox; to show these alien scums what humans are made of as well as to prevent any future attacks from them! The fate of the last pockets of humanity is in your hands… are you capable of protecting it, commander?
Gameplay
To start sending retaliating forces back to the Gorox, you’ll need to repair and develop your space station base first!
You can start by building more habitat modules to accommodate your displaced staff and for the future pilots for your space crafts. Since the last attack by Gorox depleted the station’s energy level, you will need to build a new and powerful fusion reactor to meet the energy demands of your station as well! Energy is mainly used for research purposes and for building up your forces.
Besides energy, there are 2 other resources that you’ll need to begin mass producing at once – titanium and silicon. Titanium and silicon are very vital to the development of your base as it is needed for almost every single building and unit in this game. Thus, ensure that you are producing plenty of these resources at all times by keeping your buildings upgraded as well as constructing the maximum number of resource production buildings allowed! Building silos for the storage of these resources would be a great idea too, otherwise you’ll be tripping over the ores and the silicon everywhere!
You can also further boost the production rate of your resources by positioning them so that they are within the area of influence of public buildings. Public buildings, such as media tower and disco, are buildings that enhance life quality of your inhabitants and thus, improving productivity. After all, if your inhabitants are bored, they do get up into some stupid mischiefs. However, considering that you’ve just started, you may perhaps experience some resource shortage despite your best efforts. If so, you can head over to the galactic market and buy more resources or bonus advantages (resource-related production bonus) using space cash, the currency that only real money can buy.
Due to having only 1 construction slot available, your development progress may be a tad bit slow. This is because both, the construction process as well as the upgrading process, use that same construction slot. You can pay space cash to rent up to 2 more construction slots though, if you have the cash to spare.
Furthermore, upgrading your command center will allow you to build new buildings and hence, opening up many possibilities! As most buildings take up quite a lot of space, you’ll definitely need to expand your base really soon! Base expansions, thankfully, do not require friends to help in the unlocking process, but it uses up resources or space cash instead. The number of base expansions you can purchase depends on the level of your base.
Your base looks really thriving at the moment… let’s keep it that way by building some defenses to protect it, shall we? To do that, you’ll need plenty of gun turrets and factories. Turrets, such as laser cannons, MP projector, missile battery and plasma guns are the first and main line of defense for your base and you can purchase a variety of them as you level up. It’s always best to mix and match your defenses as certain turrets are more effective against a specific type of space crafts.
Factories, on the other hand, are the building where you’ll be manufacturing your combat space crafts by the dozen! Similarly to turrets, there are a range of space crafts, all of which are combative in nature that you can manufacture. Some examples include Hornets, Bastion, Orca, and Barracuda. The higher the level you are, the more variety of space crafts that you can make. However, how many units you can have at your base is limited by the number of hangers you have on your base. You can upgrade your hanger/s to increase its storage capacity.
Let’s not forget about the main issue here, that is to defeat the Gorox and to do that you’ll need some research too! After all, battles are, usually, not won with outdated technology, so don’t put your forces in a disadvantage and let them have the best “toys” that current technology can offer! To perform research, you’ll need to build a research center for your resident scientist, Professor Wulfrich, to work in.
Research can be separated into 3 categories, namely gun turrets, support centers and units. Each individual unit or building that can be grouped under any of those categories can be upgraded up to 9 times. However, these upgrades are limited by the level of your research center, while the level of your research center is restricted by the level of your command center. If you want to upgrade further, thus you’ll need to upgrade your other facilities first.
Once everything’s upgraded and built, you can finally take on the enemy! To initiate combat, you need to spy on an enemy base first to scout out its defenses. Next, you can attack by deploying your units one at a time or in bulk at strategically weak locations in the enemy’s defenses so you can completely annihilate the alien scum. There’s a limit as to how many units you can deploy in each battle though and this limit can be increased by upgrading the portal structure in your base. In addition, each attack you launch uses up a warp portal (you will have a maximum of 3 warps). These portals regenerate over time.
The combat system is very much similar to games like Clash of Clans. However, you are unable to highlight buildings as important targets for your space crafts to focus their fire on. Units that are not destroyed in battle will return to base safely and you can reuse them for other fights as well! A quick tip – place your space crafts so that they can take out the defenses on the base first. Once the base’s defenses are out, your pilots will have nothing to oppose them as they raze the entire base to the ground… uh, space. You will also earn bash points from the attacks you launched and these points will contribute to your ranking, both the weekly ranking and general ranking (all time).
Later in the game, you’ll be asked to choose 1 of 3 factions, namely Servana Inc, Lucky Star Systems and Protosyn, to join. There will also be an option for you to establish colonies in the game to fuel the rapid development of your base!
Community
Starting with a small space station, you’ll certainly need someone or at least a lot of them to shelter you from harm so that you’ll have the time and space to grow. This is where the benefits of being in an alliance truly show and thus, you should definitely sign up to join an alliance, or to found your own, as soon as you can! You can also head over to Goodgame Galaxy’s Facebook fan page or its forums to meet with the players in the game.
Graphics/ Sound
Being a futuristic, space-themed game, it is no surprise that the game opted for techno music – like what you’d hear in Tron (the movie). The music in this game has some variety, but its battle music is perhaps the most interesting as it is very upbeat and catchy… all at the same time! The space scenery in Goodgame Galaxy is pretty average in spite of being a browser-based game. Although it is good looking enough (the planet looks amazing visually), there have been other browser-based space-themed game that look much better. For the building models and space crafts, they are very detailed and look polished.
Conclusion
In short, Goodgame Galaxy is exciting MMO strategy game that is set in the future and in space! In this game, you’ll need to manufacture space crafts, build up your base’s defenses as well as to establish a stable economy to feed and fund your potentially-massive space fleet! Be strong enough as a space empire that even the Gorox will think twice before attacking you and when the enemy hear your name, they will run in the opposite direction! If you love space-themed MMORTS, this is a great somewhat-casual game that you can enjoy! So, play Goodgame Galaxy today!
