Gameplay
After a short and sweet tutorial, you’ll be given your very first virtual aquarium. Naturally, to start, you’ll need some fishes first. Happy Aquarium provides a huge range of fishes that you can collect. Let’s not forget about the other aquatic animals available such as frogs, aquatic crawlers like lobsters, crabs and shrimps, and even huge sea creatures like whales and sharks! In this game, you can also choose the gender and name for all the sea creatures you buy. Awesome, right?
You can buy as many fishes as you like but to place them, you’ll have to bear in mind that each aquarium has a maximum capacity. Once the capacity is reached, you won’t be able to place anymore fishes. Thankfully, there are many ways you can solve this problem. You can either expand your fish tank to provide more room for your fishes or purchase a brand new tank! After all, you can own up to 20 aquariums in Happy Aquarium. You can free up some space by selling off fishes that you don’t want too.
Right, now that you’re the proud owner of a nice range of fishes, it’s time for you to perform your “aquarium-keeper” duties. You’ll begin by feeding your fishes with the feeder provided. Do take note that fish food will cost you in this game, so don’t waste your fish food by trying to over-feed your fishes... it just won’t work. Instead, feed them exactly the amount they want and need. Feeding is very important in Happy Aquarium because it helps you grow your purchased baby fishes into adult fishes that are much nicer to look at. Growing into adulthood may take some time though, and if you can’t wait, there’s always an option for you to buy insta-growth pills to instantly turn a baby fish into an adult fish.
Keeping your aquarium clean and hygienic is vital to your fishes as well. You definitely won’t want your fishes to go belly up before they reach adulthood, right? For some casual and idle fun, you can even tap the glass to make the fishes swim around rapidly in the fish tank. This is the only way, besides feeding, for you to interact with the fishes in your tank
Once your adult fishes are healthy and fed, you can then attempt to breed them to produce more fishes. The breeding process is pretty quick, but the fish egg-hatching process may take awhile. So, to speed things up, you might want to spend a bit of cash on magical vitamins called insta-hatch. After your baby fish pops out from the egg, you can easily repeat the process of growing it up by feeding it and breeding it again to obtain an endless supply of excess fishes to sell.
With some coins in hand, you can head over to the store and begin creating your beautiful aquarium. There is a wide range of decorations, including animated décor called Tank Mates, as well as props like corals, submarines, statues, clams, sea urchins, flora, and the occasional oddly-shaped stones. You can even purchase beautiful backgrounds, and add in some ambiance by placing lighting and changing the type of sand.
In addition, Happy Aquarium also provides a nice array of mini-games for you to enjoy. You can, for example, “train” your fishes and enter into a mini-game where you have to click to collect falling coins and food. You’ll also need to click on falling hazardous items like golbs of poison, or sea creatures, like squids, to avoid any misfortunes from befalling on your poor fishie.
There is also a mini-game where you can participate in an exciting treasure hunt with your fish. All you need to do in this game is to use your mouse to steer your fish around the aquarium while collecting as many coins and treasure as you can before the time runs out. There is also an arcade with a pairs game where you can win tickets in exchange for prizes. This mini-game will cost you pearls (premium cash) to buy tries though!
That being said, Happy Aquarium is a rather social game as it encourages you to visit your friends daily and check out their treasure chest for free collectibles. By completing any one of the many collections, you will win a special prize for your tank. There are also social-based events in which you’ll need to fill your “crew” (10 members needed) before embarking on an adventure to capture exotic and rare sea creatures, such as the loch ness monster, for your fish tank.

Happy Aquarium has over 7 million likes on its Facebook fan page and the game itself has hundreds of thousands of active players per month. It has recently completed its transition from mobile to the Facebook platform, but it has already racked up quite a following. Not to mention, the community at Happy Aquarium are a seriously creative bunch! There are plenty aquarium snapshots where players managed to create incredible sceneries and backgrounds using decors provided in the game. Graphics/ Sound
The cartoony graphics in Happy Aquarium is very unlike the realistic ones for some other aquarium simulation games and this is a fairly refreshing touch. In terms of music, the sound provided in the game is pleasant and soothing to listen to, but it is not at all memorable or “ear-catching”.
