Summary

Hex: Shards of Fate is a massively multiplayer online tradable card game (MMOTCG) that features a one versus duel card battle where you must deplete your opponent’s life to zero. The gameplay draws inspiration to the popular card games but now featured in a video game format.

Plotline

You play as a wandering champion that is traveling around the world of Entrath. In your adventure, you will be encountering some of the known races of Entrath, as this path you may opt to choose sides whether for the Ardent Alliance where you join arms with the fellow Humans, Elves, Orcs and the unique Coyotle race. Or you can choose the dark side with the Underworld with the Dwarves, Vennen, Shin’hare or the Necrotic.

Gameplay

How the gameplay works in Hex: Shards of Fate works very similar to a lot of popular tradable card games, most specifically Magic: the Gathering. From its basic mechanics all the way to the card types, it draws inspiration from the popular card game which can be a good and bad thing.

The basics of the game is to ensure that you defeat your opponent by draining its life to zero before they do it to you. Each side has their own 60-card decks to be used as their weapons. You can damage your enemy’s life by directly attacking with your summoned creatures or damage dealing spells. Summoning or casting requires resources, and you can acquire them from your deck when you managed to draw one from your turn.

There are certain rules to make the game balanced, for example you can only play one resource card per turn unless you use a card that can add an additional resource to your pool. Or when summoning creatures, they cannot attack until the next turn unless they have the Speed ability which allows them to attack at the same turn when they were summoned, then there is also the exhausted status after attacking which prevents them from blocking any incoming attacks directly to you and the status will end when you start your next turn.

There are different kinds of cards in Hex: Shards of Fate. There are the standard Troop cards that can deal damage and block attacks, Resource that are required to cast spells and do summons, Action cards that can do effects in play but are one time use. It also features a Quick Action that allows you to use during your opponent’s turn.

Constant cards, on the other hand, works like Action cards but stays in play until it is destroyed and Artifacts that can work as either a Troop or Constant. Each of the cards can work better with each of the types to provide a powerful combo against your opponent. The rarity of the cards may differ, from commons up to the legendaries, the rarer the card, the powerful it can create, but common cards can still provide a great push to your play in the early stages of your matches.

The best aspect in any card games is the deck building, you earn rewards like new cards or booster packs that lets you build your own deck from scratch. This adds new strategies on your battle that plays differently depending on the type of opponent that you are expecting to fight. In the beginning, you start off with a pre-constructed deck to give you an idea on the basics, but as you progress, you will be encouraged to modify your deck to make it play better against powerful foes.

The game features two different modes that caters to different kinds of players. There is the classic PvP battles where you can challenge real players online. Or you can play the game against opponents in a PvE campaign mode. Here you can learn more about the lore of the game and battle AI controlled enemies where you can earn rewards. There are also a series of quests and challenges that you can take that also provide rewards.

Community

Even with more online card games releasing in a free to play model, Hex: Shards of Fate still has a healthy number of players actively playing. You can do a matchmaking and still get a player in your queue. There are also a series of tournaments that offer real cash and other neat prizes occasionally which encouraged competitive players to participate. There is also a global chat area for online players to chat with the others.

Graphics/ Sound

The visual effects on the game has the combination of 2D and 3D, the 3D effects provide a sense of immersion to players as it gives life to the cards with its special effects. The 2D artwork are impressive that really reminds you of the classic card games in physical cards that some collectors love to collect. The soundtrack is decent as it provides fantasy-themed tracks to keep the mood in the game.

Conclusion

Though it is heavily familiar with a popular card game, Hex: Shards of Fate is still an entertaining game that can be played by long time card game fans. Though newbies may take a while to get used to the game mechanics, but once they get used to it, they will surely enjoy one fine card game. And the best part is players can focus on being casual or competitive.
