Gameplay
To start playing, you are given 3 languages to choose from first, namely English, Spanish and German. Choose one you prefer and head right into the game! The game introduces you to Sydney Quinn, one of the lead investigators for the Mystery Society, who will be guiding you through your training mission in Paris.
Each location on the map in Hidden Objects: Mystery Society is indicative of a scene that you can explore. For every scene you play, you’ll consume a certain amount of energy in return. Scenes are technically not timed, though there’s a timer that counts up instead of down. This timer will record the time you took to complete a game and reward you with bonus points accordingly. You’ll also earn a speed bonus if you can find all the items on the list as fast and as consecutively as you can.
The scenes start off very easy as they only provide a couple of items for you to find - at most 6 items at the beginning anyway. However, not to worry! This list of “things to find” will gradually expand as you level up and increase the mastery of the scene. Talking about the mastery of scenes, well, like any hidden object game, Hidden Objects: Mystery Society allows you to master scenes by replaying the scene. Replaying scenes is actually pretty fun in this game as the locations of the items do change, but it’s rather random, so sometimes, it’ll change, and sometimes, it’ll not. You can earn up to 5 mastery stars per scene and naturally, as your mastery increases, the scene will increase in difficulty as well.
There are plenty of game modes on offer in Hidden Objects: Mystery Society. These game modes include words, differences, silhouette, and night modes. The words mode involves a list of names of the objects that you’ll need to find in the scene while for silhouette, instead of a list of names, you’ll get a list of the shadow figures of the objects. For night mode, the entire scene will be darkened and your mouse cursor will be the only source of light you can use to search for the items you’ll need. The items are listed as words in this mode.
Interestingly, the game includes differences as a hidden object game mode in this game. For differences, you’ll need to compare two similar cropped images of the scene and identify the items that are missing from any one of the two images provided. Unfortunately, game modes are randomly assigned so you’ll just play whatever you get from the game.
Have enough gold coins and level? Well, you can then unlock a new location on the map by buying the necessary visas using in-game cash you’ve earned. There are plenty of locations on the map that you can unlock though most of them do take quite a while to get to. For example, to get to Prague, you’ll need to be level 44. Even for the most diligent of gamers, that’ll take a long time to achieve. Moreover, once you’ve collected the required materials and reached level 18, you can even head to overseas locations from the airport.
There are also quests for you to complete. Quests usually ask you to collect collectibles from certain locations on the map. Once the entire set of collectibles is completed, you can then trade in some items you’ve obtained from scenes with other fellow members of the Mystery Society to obtain valuable items that you’ll need to complete your collection and earn yourself a free hint.
In terms of hints, Hidden Objects: Mystery Society provides quite a range of them. They include magnifying glass which locates 1 hidden item in the scene; magnet that fetches 1 item from the location; fingerprint duster which reveals all hidden items for a brief period of time and infrared scanners that reveals items when you mouse over them. There is also a compass hint that points you in the direction of the hidden items, touch magnet that retrieves all items near to where you place the magnet and vacuum which finds 6 items in the scene for you. There’s also a hint that is specific to a game mode, namely the night mode, called the torch. You can use it to light up the entire room for a brief while.
Community
The community for Hidden Objects: Mystery Society is pretty sizeable – the game has more than 20 thousand likes on its Facebook fan page and around 100 thousand monthly active players! If you encountered any problems in-game, feel free to ask for help there, or if you want to add friends, you can meet your fellow players there and perhaps add them to your friends’ list as well!
Graphics/ Sound
Hidden Objects: Mystery Society provides a pleasant, orchestral-like music that is pretty catchy and not at all repetitive. In terms of graphics, the game did very well in that department. The scenes are all very well-designed to the point where every hidden object manages to blend in so well with its environs to the point where it can be out in front and still look inconspicuous.
Conclusion
All in all, Hidden Objects: Mystery Society is a fun-to-play hidden object game that allows you to travel across the globe and visit various famous locations like Venice, London and Prague. Work together with your fellow Mystery Society members, trade with them, and uncover mysteries along the way.
