Summary
Jacky’s Farm is a fun, farm-themed match-3 puzzle game that is obviously backed by a different version of the classic “Jack and the Beanstalk” storyline and a gameplay that will keep your eyes glued to the screen for hours to come. Each game is challenging in its own right and new elements are constantly being introduced to keep you on your toes.
Plotline
Although the game doesn’t really contain a lot of text, you can experience a nice twist to the classic “Jack and the Beanstalk” children’s tale through the levels of match-3 games that you play.
Gameplay
Unlike many other match-3 puzzle game, Jacky’s Farm is quite a strategic game. The game provides you with a huge variety of special crops, a.k.a. power-ups, which you can only get by matching more than 3 crop pieces. For instance, matching 4 crops in a square form will get you a magic pumpkin, which will help you remove important obstacles or pieces in some very hard-to-reach areas in a more “precise strike” kind of way.
This is very different from other bomb-based power-ups like the diagonal bomb or the grape bomb which you can get by matching 5 crops in an L form and a T form respectively. If you can match 6 crops together, you can even get a hurricane power-up that can clear all items in a row or column depending on which direction you swipe it towards. Best yet, you can combine these specials to obtain much stronger effects!
As mentioned, the game can be pretty strategy-based. The puzzles you are asked to solve sometimes consist of multiple playing grids. Some of these tiles can even move as you make your moves. The objectives that you’ll be asked to complete can get pretty varied as well. At times, you’ll be asked to simply collect a certain number of a specific type of crop, while at other times, you may be asked to collect special magic beans to feed the fairy and help her along her journey. Not to mention, there is a boss level every 10 levels or so. Here, you’ll be asked to make matches and use those matches as munition to hurt the big bad giant.
As you advance to later levels, you’ll encounter challenging obstacles that will do their best to hinder your progress. These include grasses which you’ll need to make matches over them, or barrels that can be destroyed by making matches next to them. These obstacles will gradually become trickier as you move to the higher levels.
You are also given a limited number of moves to complete the level. Naturally, extra moves will turn random pieces on your board into specials and activate them, giving you a cascade of extra points. However, if you have not enough moves, you can choose to either buy more moves or give up, lose a life, and try again.
Obviously, losing a life isn’t ideal since if you have none left, you can no longer play the game… at least until your lives regenerate which frankly can take quite a while. This is why you should know how to use the boosters that you can get for free and when. There are many types of boosters, including the shovel which will allow you to remove a single crop or obstacle of your choice. You can also buy a Pumpkin booster to get free magic pumpkins on your playing grid before a game begins.
Community
Jacky’s Farm is a pretty popular match-3 game on both Facebook and on the mobile platform. As such, the community in the game is quite huge. You can also invite your friends to the game so you can gift each other free boosters and lives.
Graphics/ Sound
The graphics in Jacky’s Farm are quite alright for a casual game. The colors used are bright and attractive and every character in the game looks well-designed. The music is really nice as well. It’s relaxing and yet not the “drowsy” sort of music that can just knock the lights out if you’re tired enough.
Conclusion
Although the game doesn’t really focus much on its storyline – something that I think it should, Jacky’s Farm isn’t your average match-3 puzzle game. Truly, the puzzle element in this game is strong and it requires you to have a solid knowledge of how to form and use your special power-ups. If this sounds just like the game you like, know that the game is also available on mobile devices in addition to being on Facebook.
