Summary

With action-packed and brilliantly-animated moves, Kritika Online lives up to its name and franchise. The game offers plenty of stage-based “questing” zones which end with an epic boss fight and also PvP arenas for you to test your mettle. There are many ways for you to improve your characters; ways that you’ll need to fully utilize in order to ensure that you’re the best player around! Let’s not forget about the game’s amazingly engaging storyline as well. The villain Archie must be stopped at all costs – will you be able to save the poor people of Kyrenia from his tyranny?

Plotline

The middle age of Kyrenia North was ended by the discovery of Lapisium, a potent mineral that contained immense power, bringing the entire nation into the dawn of a new mechanical era. However, most of the Lapisium supply in the world is controlled by Archie, and as a result, he became the most powerful person in the world.

The bad thing is... Archie is neither a fair nor merciful ruler. His iron-fist rule has caused the nation’s people to be split into 2 groups – those who supported his regime and those who want to engineer his downfall. Some citizens have started to revolt, forcing Archie to build up an impressive and deadly army of mechanical creatures. He also became extremely paranoid, leading him to create a mechanical monstrosity – the Boulder Demon.

Currently, the demon is running amok on the world and you are determined to stop it before more lives are lost. Are you strong enough to be able to do it?

Gameplay

Once you’re set up and ready, you’ll first need to create a character to play the game with. There are 4 classes on offer in Kritika Online, namely the scythe-using (obviously) Scyther, the Warrior with its compulsory oversized sword, the dual-wielding Rogue, and lastly – now this is quite an odd class – the Mage class which happens to be able to use guns like James Bond and hurl powerful magics at their enemies like... well, a really proficient magic user. The choice you make here isn’t too important since you are allowed to create more than 1 character.

Not to mention, you’ll gain access to the game’s advanced classes once you reached level 15 in the game. Due to the stark differences between each of these advanced classes, you’ll probably need to change your play style after the class change. In terms of character customization, the genders of each class are unfortunately fixed, but you are allowed to mix and match a variety of hairstyles, hair color, face shape, eye color, skin color and other features. You can even choose the colors you like for your character’s clothes.

In Kritika Online, one of the first things they taught you, aside from how to move your character, is how to do combat. This is because, unlike most “tank and spank” MMORPGs, you’ll need to move quite a lot in this game. Due to this, the combat system in this game feels very fluid, especially when the game included “jumping” into the mix. You can jump and change direction in mid-air to avoid danger, or even jump and activate a certain skill in mid-air to get a quite different damage effect and animation. Of course, like most action-based combat, Kritika Online also require you to use your dodge skill at the most opportune time during combat to reduce or to completely avoid taking any damage.

There are plenty of other nuances in the game’s combat system that you can fully utilize in order to maximize the damage you deal, such as combo abilities, which will only be unlocked by chaining up some of your basic skills in a particular sequence, as well as a back attack bonus. The game’s combat system is also very well-suited to the game, especially when it comes to the game’s boss encounters, because the bosses in this game know how to use their abilities. You’ll only meet a boss at the end of every stage or instance you run through.

Similar to the stage-based questing system available in games like Dragon Nest, you’ll need to complete these “stages” or “instance” multiple times just so you can “level up” the stage from the Normal level right up to the Legendary level (4 levels in total) and get the best rewards the stage has to offer. Interestingly, at the end of every instance, if you managed to deal the most damage and snagged the MVP title, you’ll actually get to pick your reward... well, not exactly. Being an MVP means you can pick a faced-down reward card from the 4 given, but if you’re not MVP, you’ll be simply assigned a random card after the MVP has taken his pick.

Aside from the usual quest stages, there are various other instances you can challenge yourself with, such as the Crusade instance, the Ether Stage, a Boss-only Stage and more. As you may have noticed, Kritika Online has quite a lot of PvE content. However, PvP players mustn’t despair just yet... if you managed to reach level 60 and above, you’ll finally gain entry into the Arena to test your mettle against other players. The Arena is separated into 5 rank brackets, and depending on your performance in the arena, your character will move either up or down the rank ladder.

That being said, don’t let the other players hand your ass back to you – make sure your character is in its best possible shape. One of the main methods of “character strengthening” in this game – short of caving in and giving him or her copious amounts of “steroids” a.k.a. bonuses that you can buy using premium or real cash – is by improving your character’s equipments.

You can do so at the forge with the necessary runes and stones. You should also bear in mind that every item you upgrade will become bound to that character, so be sure to switch to the correct character before picking up that forging hammer. Durability is important in Kritika Online as well. Once any item has zero durability, any beneficial effect it may have on your character will instantly be removed. Thus, be sure to keep your tools of your trade well-repaired at all times.

There’s also a machine called a “Jewel Funie” which will allow you to equip powerful soul stones to your equipment; unlocks sockets on your equipments; upgrade low level soul stones into a stronger one; and combine 2 different soul stones of the same grade to get a random soul stone of a different type but same grade. This is a great way for you to give your gear some extra boost.

In addition to title attributes, another crucial way to substantially buff up your character is by upgrading his or her skills. You’ll need skill points for that and thankfully, you can earn more points with every level up. You can also learn new skills by simply investing a skill point into the skill in question. Interestingly, most classes have their own class-specific special skills in addition to the usual Dah, Normal Attacks and Emergency Escape skills. For instance, the Mage class has this really awesome Shadow Hand skill that can be triggered when an enemy is knocked down. As there isn’t anything that resembles a “talent or skill tree” in Kritika Online, you’re stuck with the current skills you have... at least until you do a class change.

Is your inventory clogging up with gear you don’t need? Well, you can either try to sell them off (only the unbound ones, of course) at the Auction House or you can salvage them for valuable parts via the salvage machine. The parts can then be used on the equipments that your character is currently using.

Unlike other games, Kritika Online is a game that cares about its players. This explains the presence of a Fatigue system in the game. Every stage entry will consume your Fatigue Points for the day, and once they are completely depleted, you’ll lose your Fatigue Payback Buff and be unable play the game. Your points will reset at the end of every day. This is a rather efficient way to prevent overplaying and to avoid players from burning through all the game’s content by overplaying.

Amazingly, there are also internet café rewards for players who connect to the game servers from participating internet cafes. These rewards include exclusive avatar items and weapons, more fatigue points for you to use, as well as increase quest completion experience and rewards.

Community

Players in Kritika Online can truly be a part of the game community by signing up and join a Guild. Guild members are required to donate guild points for the betterment of the guild and in return, they will get some company while leveling and when they want to challenge a difficult stage in the game, which calls for teamwork, they can easily find willing participants within the guild.

By adding friends, teaming up and playing together, you can also earn friend points. These points can in turn be used to exchange for various gifts for your friends. That said, ever since the game became open to the public, there are already some gold sellers hanging around major questing hubs “yelling” out their wares through the chat system or through the game’s loudspeaker system that will allow the sellers to market their gold to every player on the server regardless of where they’re at. Admittedly, it can be pretty annoying.

Graphics/ Sound

The anime-themed graphics in Kritika Online is fantastic. They have this dreamy-look which kind of resembles the visuals in Dragon Nest that I happen to adore. The soundtracks in the game are very well-composed as well and have quite the variety. They can range from soothing, Celtic-inspired tunes to the rock music that plays during combat that will surely get your blood pumping. The sound effects are also very well-done and play a rather important role as an early warning system of sorts before a boss unleashes its ability.

Conclusion

To conclude, Kritika Online is an impressive anime-themed MMORPG that provides an engaging storyline, sufficient class selection (if you include the advanced classes), an action-packed combat system, plenty of instances for you to explore and conquer, as well as opportunities for you to go head-to-head with another player in the Arena once you reached higher levels. There are also many ways you can buff up your character besides simply leveling up. The graphics and sound in the game are perfectly done, improving player immersion and subsequently, their gaming experience. Seriously, if you’re looking for a Dragon Nest-like game to play, Kritika Online is your best bet. Give it a try today!
