Summary

Being a light MMO game, Lego Minifigures Online is a solid Lego game for Lego fanatics and children alike! You’ll also definitely see plenty of typical MMO features in this game, including using character skills for combat, skill trees, instances as well as having 3 different character classes. There are up to 70 adorable minifigures that you can collect and upgrade using diamonds or stars. You can even purchase minifigures in real life and input the code into the game to get the virtual versions of your minifigures as well. Thus, if you have a youngster or even a friend, who is a huge Lego fan, this is a great free-to-play game for you to pick up and play with him or her!

Plotline

The story changes from theme to theme. However, for the first pirate theme, the story goes like this: Your character arrived on the pirate island while trying to find the missing minifigures from your character’s ‘welcome to Lego minifigures online’ party and you started exploring. As you progress through the map, you eventually reached a fortified wall that is blocking your path, and thankfully, there’s a cannon nearby.

However, the jackets, or dragoons behind the wall aren’t as amused by their destroyed wall and decided to throw your character into jail. Your character met an elderly pirate captain in the brigs and both of them decided to team up and stage a jail break! Being an escaped convict, your character is now as wanted as the pirate captain. To return the favor of saving him from a lonely death in the prison he suggested that you head towards to the pirate town on the Isle of Yarr to join as a jolly pirate crew. Will your LEGO minifigures make it? What will happen to them now? You can find out more by playing the game!

Gameplay

After signing up and installing Lego Minifigures Online, you’ll be brought to the menu to choose your very first set of Lego minifigures for your adventure! There are 3 sets for you to choose from and each set contains 3 minifigures of different classes, namely defender, builder and strikers. Defenders are the most well-rounded melee/tank class and can dish out a respectable amount of damage, while builders do not deal a lot of damage but they have the special ability to craft useful objects from Lego pieces that will help you progress through the game.

Strikers, on the other hand, are the class with the most damage-dealing ability, due to their special area of effect skills. By having each class in your team (that’s the best team composition, by the way), you won’t need to worry about not having the correct class of minifigures to complete certain parts of the story quest.

Once you’ve done choosing your character, you will be given the opportunity to mix and match your character’s name from the list of words provided. However, do note that although you need to choose a first, middle and last name for your character, only the middle name will be displayed in the game. After everything’s done, your chosen character will be dropped into the world of Legos and you’re ready to start the game!

The game starts off with a simple tutorial to teach you the basics of movements and combat. Since this game is a point-and-click adventure, you will need to use your mouse to move and to attack. The combat in this game is simple as well – it is a straight-up hack-and-slash most of the time. However, it adds in your minifigures’ skills or abilities into the mix, allowing more variety to combat. Each minifigure has their own special attacks - two of them.

Furthermore, you may also be wondering “Why you had to choose a set of minifigures instead of just one minifigure during the character selection process?” Well, this is mainly due to this very unique aspect in the combat system of this game, called ‘character switching’. While battling enemies, you can easily rotate between your 3 characters in the same set. In fact, switching characters is the key to effective combat. It’s way better to switch your current character to another character when the current one is low on health, as opposed to wasting health potions or to die. You can then switch the character with the low health back and wait for his/her health to regenerate while out of combat. If your character dies, you will not be able to use the character again… at least until the revive timer has run through its course.

The gameplay in Lego Minifigures Online is somewhat similar to Legend of Zelda. This is because you’ll be spending a lot of your time trying to destroy as many Lego crates, barrels, chests, fruit baskets/trays or anything in the game that is destroyable… like what Link in Legend of Zelda does. As a matter of fact, a lot of the smaller objects in the game (not including houses or walls) can be trashed by the mere swipe of your character’s sword or staff.

What’s the purpose of leaving a destructive trail of Legos wherever your character goes? Well, first off, these objects will reward you with gold stars, bonus health and even sometimes diamonds. Gold stars are vital for upgrading your minifigures while diamonds are the main in-game currency in Lego Minifigures Online and can be used for purchasing potions or to buy new minifigures. New minifigures comes in blind bags and is randomly selected for you. In other words, you cannot just buy whichever minifigure you want. Don’t worry though, once you have a specific minifigure, the game will not give you the same minifigure again. There are up to 70 minifigures for you to collect in this game and it’ll take quite awhile before you can get all of them.

Buying minifigures in the game can be rather expensive as they can cost up to one thousand diamonds. If you tried the game and know the rate at which you can earn diamonds in this game, you will know that getting to one thousand diamonds can be tough unless you shell out some real money.

You can use real money to purchase your virtual minifigures at the shop or you could also head over to your nearest toy store and buy the real life minifigures (Series 12 only) instead! Real life minifigures have special codes attached to them and you can input these codes into the game to collect your virtual minifigures! The process works somewhat like the game Skylanders. You can also subscribe for a monthly membership (using real money) to earn a free minifigure bag every month too!

Thankfully, there’s another less money-heavy method to obtain new minifigures - by farming instances or dungeons to painstakingly collect your new minifigure piece by piece. However, instances have their own cooldown timers and you’ll need to wait several hours before you can clear them again. Furthermore, the drop rate for minifigure pieces is not exactly high either, so do expect to put in hours of gaming before you can collect all of the pieces. Once you’ve collected the body/torso, the head and the legs of the same minifigure, you will just need to combine them to a baseplate and voila! You finally got your new minifigure! Whew!

If you decide to get the membership, you may be interested to know that besides the monthly free minifigure bag, you will also earn a lot of other benefits such as weekly free diamonds and permanent stars boost. You will even get access to special additional adventures, called pocket adventures, to earn more stars, diamonds and experience points too! Most importantly, by being a subscriber, you will be able to utilize the in-game text chat… sorry, free-to-play players!

Community

The community in Lego Minifigures Online is one of the most diverse among other games on the internet! This is due to the fact that Lego is a highly popular building-block-type toy that caters to people at all stages of life! However, the game separates the free-to-play community in the game with the subscribers’ community by allowing only subscribers to communicate in the in-game chat box. If they could only change this, then the gulf that separates both types of players can be narrowed.

Graphics/ sound

The cartoony graphics in the game does not only appeal to kids, it looks really good to an adult as well! The Lego minifigures are so adorable and the animations for them are very well-designed. The music in Lego Minifigures Online changes depending on the theme of the story your minifigures are in. Thus, for the first theme, the pirate theme, you can expect Pirate of the Carribean-type music in the background. The game even contains plenty of voice acting, but the characters in this game do not speak English though. They usually ‘exclaim’ in gibberish instead. This makes the characters even cuter!

In short, Lego Minifigures Online is a fun-filled casual MMORPG that is guaranteed to bring a smile on your face, as well as anybody who is playing along with you!
