Gameplay
The gameplay in Mahjong Epic 2 is simple and engaging. Thus, if you have had experience with any other mahjong games, you should feel at home in this game. If not, the game is pretty easy to pick up! Just select a layout you want to challenge and head right into a game!
In each new game, you’ll be presented with a board filled with mahjong pieces arranged in certain formations, such as H-shape, crossroads, arrow, standard layout and many others, called layouts. There are up to 350 different mahjong layouts in offer in Mahjong Epic 2.
Similarly in the classic Pairs game, whereby you flip open cards to match 2 of them together, you’ll need to match 2 mahjong pieces with the same patterns, numbers or words together. Instead of flipping cards over in a Pairs game, in Mahjong Epic 2, you’ll need to uncover hidden mahjong tiles by matching the tiles on top or on its either side. Once exposed, the tiles will then be available for matching.
Thankfully though, Mahjong Epic 2 provides some passive help for you, provided that you have the option turned on. The game will highlight all available tiles that you can use for matching, leaving the rest of the blocked tiles in shadows. Blocked tiles are tiles that are flanked on both left and right sides by other tiles or tiles that are stacked on by other tiles.
The goal in Mahjong Epic 2 is very straightforward – you just need to remove all the tiles from the board by matching the identical tiles. However, time is also a critical aspect in this game as the games are all time-based. You are given a limited amount of time - it varies depending on the difficulty of the layout you’re on - to match all the mahjong pairs on the playing field! The timed feature in Mahjong made the game much more challenging and fun to play!
Furthermore, you can earn up to 3 stars per layout if you complete the game without using any of the useful helpers, namely hint and shuffle, available. Of course, you’ll also need to finish the level within the stipulated time. If you couldn’t get 3 stars in a layout, you can always replay the layout once the previous playthrough was completed, or well, if you want, you could just quit the level and restart that particular layout. In addition to stars, there are even a plethora of achievements that you can strive to obtain as well!
If there are any trickier layouts that you need some help with, well, be assured that Mahjong Epic 2 offers 2 useful helpers to lend you a hand. There’s a hint option that will randomly highlight a possible match on the board for you. This is definitely the option you’ll need to first use to see if you’re really stuck... or not. If you are truly stuck in the game, there’s another option that you can use as well – shuffle. The shuffle will rearrange all the mahjong tiles on the playing field, opening up new matches and allowing you to progress in the game.
Interestingly, Mahjong Epic 2 offers what some mahjong players have always wanted – plain old challenging mahjong games without all the thrills, bells and whistles. There are no special bonuses in the game, nor are there boosters. There aren’t even a storyline in this game. Mahjong Epic 2 offers plain and simplistic mahjong, but of course, you shouldn’t be mistaken that the game is very simple to complete... the game does put up plenty of resistance in terms of that.
