Summary
MechQuest is a free online browser roleplaying game from the makers of AdventureQuest and DragonFable. It features the classic browser game experience where players venture into different locations to complete quests and defeat a limitless wave of enemies for more exp and powerful loot. You can also participate in special events that are themed depending on the season or new story update events to add more storyline to the expanding lore.
Plotline
The game is set in a futuristic world, where you meet different aliens and other humans living in other planets. You start off as a star cadet where you head off to the Soluna City. You then begin your adventure with different quests, you can take them in any order you like, as the story can also progress on your own pacing. And the interesting part with MechQuest is that it has regular updates on its storyline to keep it fresh to the veteran players and even engaging for new players.
Gameplay
The game mechanics of MechQuest is very identical to its fantasy-theme counterpart; AdventureQuest. It features all of the hefty amount of quests, events and items that players will be collecting and accomplishing.
Players can create their own characters, from picking gender to the appearance, the cosmetics for the character are very limited, from only selecting hairstyles, hair color and skin color. But in terms of costumes and other accessories, they can be acquired by completing quests or purchasing them at the in-game store with real money or in-game currency.
As for gameplay, it features the classic turn-based roleplaying game combat. Each side will take turns on attacking or defending. Some abilities may have casting cost or cooldown durations, while other have special attributes that can deal status ailments on enemies. You win if you managed to bring the HP of your opponents to zero, otherwise you lose if they managed to do it to you first. Winning a battle nets you exp and credits and you can battle more enemies at your own pacing, plus there are no penalties when losing, so you can grind up to earn more credits to purchase the powerful weapons for your arsenal.
In MechQuest, you get to pilot your own mech. Your starting mech will feel nimble, but after enduring some battles to earn enough money, you can upgrade it to add more powerful attacks and sustain more damage. The appearance can also be changed by purchasing parts from heads to arms and even the bodies. However one drawback is that the equipment that you purchased will be unequipped every time you logged back to the game, this can be remedied by purchasing a Star Cadet account, which is the premium account for MechQuest.
There are a huge load of quests that can be found at MechQuest. From the basic beginner quests, to the story driven ones, they provide enough content for players to enjoy. These can provide a hefty amount of exp to level up and credits for you to use in improving your mech. Some of these content even provide more lore to the MechQuest world and add more life to it, and the quests can also give out exclusive rewards such as cosmetic items or new powerful equipment. Interacting with NPCs is interesting, as not just they provide quests to you, they can also provide some quirky remarks that have reference to it lore or on current events, such as internet memes and other pop culture tropes.
The item mall in the game is just the same as with other MMOs, but more items are only available for those who purchase them with real money. Then there is the premium account called Star Captain Account where it provides a huge load of benefits to the user, from exclusive equipment and quests to increased inventory and mech hangar. The good side is that purchasing is only one-time and you are now getting long-term perks.
Community
Despite the game being an online browser game, MechQuest does not offer any multiplayer features. There are no ways to communicate with other players as the game is basically a single player story experience. But even without any multiplayer functions, the game has a large community, with thousands of players online just to enjoy the space adventure, it keeps the game running with more content based on player feedback.
Graphics/ Sound
In terms of visuals, MechQuest has a simple anime-style art design to keep it more colourful. Since the game runs on a browser, it features flash-based 2D animation, which is the same as with the other browser games from Artix. The game lacks any music which is a letdown as it could help keep the mood high, the sound effects are minimal are just comprised of hit noise and explosions just to confirm if your attacks made a hit.
Conclusion
Though MechQuest is already an old game as it still runs on Flash, it can still provide some entertainment to the players despite the simplistic combat and visuals, it provides a lot of content to keep everyone engaged for days. Those who want something simple and less requirements for their computer or laptop may want to consider trying this game out.
