Summary

You are holding a treasure map on a remote island with a wicked grin on your face! The treasure is certainly here... you can practically smell it! There are just “some” match-3 puzzles standing in the way between you and your preciooouuussss treasure! Surely you can solve them all to get to that big red ‘X’ on the ground? Well, take on the challenge and see how far you can go and how many treasures you can dig up before you are defeated by the puzzles in Pirate Treasure! Solve all the riddles and find the ultimate treasure of the renowned pirate, Henry Morgan!

Gameplay

To start, the game provides a nice little tutorial to instruct you on how the game works. More instructions will subsequently pop up as you encounter new items while playing the game.

In Pirate Treasure, you’ll need to swap 2 gems that are adjacent to each other in order to get 3 similar gems in a row or column to explode them! You can swap the gems either vertically or horizontally, but, obviously, you cannot swap them in a diagonal manner. By making match-4s, you will get to create a special gem with a bolt of lightning circling it. Match the lightning gem up and it will clear an entire row or column, depending on which direction, either vertical or horizontal, the band of lightning is.

For matches of 5 gems, the special gem you get depends on how you matched the gems together. If the match-5 is in a T- or L-shape, you’ll get a cross lightning gem that is able to clear both row and column it is on when matched. If the match-5 is in a linear form (entire row or column), you’ll get a brilliant star gem instead! To activate it, you just need to swap the star gem with any regular gems and all the gems with the same color as the swapped gem will explode!

Matching gems is fun and all, but what’s the purpose of all these? Well, the objective or goal for the levels in Pirate Treasure basically asks you to clear the field of gems marked with a black skull in the limited number of moves provided. In order to clear these marked gems, you will need to match it up with other normal gems. As you progress, you will encounter new objectives, such as collecting all the barrels in the field by dropping it to the bottom of the board. Pirate Treasures is a fairly easy game to play.

Since you are provided with limited number of moves, what if you have plenty of leftovers after completing the objective? Well, at the end, any remaining moves will be instantly converted into bonus score points. Moreover, if you have any special gems, they will all be automatically activated as well, earning you some more extra points!

In addition, each level has up to 3 stars for you to earn. Stars are important to open treasure chests that are scattered around on the map. If you’re wondering what’s in the chest, well, you should definitely start racking up stars to find out (Hint: free gold, power-ups or both)! There are also bonus levels that you can unlock, if you have enough stars, where you can win unique prizes! Bonus levels have a different objective than the usual ones. For example, the first bonus level requires you to feed the monstrous and carnivorous fish by collecting the required number of fishes in 80 seconds. It’s a race against time as you complete matches with gems that has “fish” marks on them to “feed” the giant fish! However, once everything’s completed and you get the prize, you cannot play the level again. It’s a one-time deal! Every episode you’ve completed will also award you with a collectible, which is then stored under your “treasures” tab. Complete all the episodes in Pirate Treasures to collect them all!

Although the levels at the beginning are not at all hard, some of the later puzzles can be pretty tough to crack, especially if you aim for the 3-star mark and especially when the various types of blockers or obstacles are involved. There will be chains and webs that will keep you from matching up the gem underneath it until you’ve released the gem from its bonds and there are also bricks that you’ll need to break in order to access the gems the brick tiles have walled off. There are also metal chests that will take “ages” to crack, particularly when they are triple chained!

There are even boss levels whereby you’ll have to fight mean walruses by matching gems around it. Thus, due to this, there may be times when you did a level so poorly that you’ve actually failed the level and in turn losing 1 life. Thankfully, you are given a maximum of 5 lives and that these lives can slowly regenerate over time. However, you can skip all the waiting by buying more lives using real cash or by asking from your friends.

If you need any help with a particularly frustrating level, well, worry no longer! Pirate Treasures has just the “things” for you – power-ups! The game doesn’t have a plethora of power-ups like other match-3 game. Instead, it keeps it simple by providing only 3 important ones, namely the hammer, whirlwind and lightning, all of which can be unlocked by completing the first episode of the game. The hammer works by being able to break any gem it touches while whirlwind is a rather powerful power-up that will mix all the gems up on the board. Lightning, on the other hand, is able to blast any column in the field. You are given 3 for each of the power-ups for free, but if you need more, you can easily purchase them (in the form of power-up value packs) from the Pirate Shop using the in-game coins you’ve collected.

Besides power-ups, the Pirate Shop also sells a range of other merchandises that any self-respecting, treasure-hunting pirate might need... and all of these are available at affordable prices! There are extra power-ups, such as hourglass, which adds more moves at all levels and is active for an entire day, and star wand that makes a star out of a random gem before each game for 3 days in a row, for real cash. You can also purchase the rum needed to “whip” your crew in shape to move on to a new episode once you’ve completed the previous one here. However, if you would like to bypass all that hassle, you could just buy a rum stock for real cash and your crew will not ask for rum for 10 days.

Last but not least, for those ambitious players, do challenge yourself and try to obtain all the achievements in Pirate Treasures. Some achievements are level-locked though, but as soon as you’ve completed the level on the map, you’ll be able to unlock a new row of achievements. See how many of them can you get!

With almost 600 thousand likes on its Facebook fan page, Pirate Treasures is indeed a very popular match-3 game! There are also plenty of promotional offers available on the page if you’re interested to buy coins or special power-ups. The community in this game is very friendly as well! Thus, if you need friends who will gift you lives on a constant basis, you can definitely find some willing takers on the fan page. The developers are very active too and they occasionally introduce new elements to the game... it can be a new episode or a bunch of new power-ups.

Graphics/ Sound

The very cartoony graphics in this game has a very unique art style to it. It is unlike every other cartoonish match-3 games. The backgrounds in Pirate Treasures are very beautiful as well and the gems look well-designed! The music in this game is perhaps one of the best pirate music for a casual game. The game provides 3 different pirate-y tunes. One of which is available on the map and sounds very upbeat and a lot more “pirate” as compared to the soft music provided during a game that is more soothing instead. The music for the bonus level is different too! The music sounds more like the combat music for an exhilarating pirate swordfight. Overall, the music in this game is definitely of high quality!

Conclusion

In conclusion, Pirate Treasures is a fun-filled, addictive and pirate-themed match-3 game that contains plenty of challenging levels (though the earlier levels are fairly easy) that you can enjoy! Match 3 or more gems together to explode them out of existence! Match more gems and you can earn yourself some very useful special gems, such as the star gem, lightning gem and cross lightning gem. Try to earn 3 stars for all the levels to unlock pirate chests for some goodies and even to uncover a bonus level, whereby you’ll have to match up gems marked with a fish icon to feed the monstrous and carnivorous fish in the game! There are plenty of obstacles and blockers that will hamper your efforts to get those stars or to complete a level though! Thus, the game offers 3 different power-ups that you can buy using in-game coins to help you! Strap on your scabbard, wooden leg and eye patch – it’s time to start hunting for yer pirate treasure in Pirate Treasures today!
