Summary

Rocket Wars is a hidden gem, ready and waiting to blast off and give you an explosive experience as soon as you start it up. It’s a perfect game for the Nintendo Switch, delivering a couch co-op and PvP gameplay that will provide you and anyone playing it short bursts of adrenaline-fueled fun.

Here, you’ll take control of the game’s one of many rocket ships and compete in a variety of game modes both in 2v2 or on four-player free-for-all. Game modes vary, with each requiring different goals and victory conditions, keeping things fresh for all players.

With that said, would you want to get into a rocket and lift-off to fight in Rocket Wars? Let’s check out what it has to offer:

Gameplay

In Rocket Wars, you control a rocket ship and compete with or against four other players in different game modes. These include the team (2v2) and free-for-all versions of Deathmatch, Survivor, Nuke King, and Space Ball. Meanwhile, Entangled is a team exclusive mode, while Free Play is a free-for-all exclusive. Matches are set in a set in a circular arena wherein the boundaries put you back into the fray. There’s also a circular white ball in the middle that you can use to either escape or block your enemies’ shots.

The game modes vary, giving you a fresh and unique experience. For example, Survivor is a last man standing mode where players have five lives each. Deathmatch is a race to 10 kills, while in Space Ball, you’re tasked to protect your area while driving a football to those of your opponents. These require different play styles which will keep you on your toes.
In total, Rocket Wars has 12 ships that you’ll gradually unlock as you gain experience and level up. Each ship has its own strengths and weaknesses which makes it important to pick one that suits your playstyle. For example, if you prefer a durable ship but you’re ok with dealing lesser damage, go with the Bubble. Meanwhile, if you prefer firepower over health and handling, go for the Vector and Viper. Apart from unlocking ships, you’ll also unlock skins which will give your ship a unique look.

During every match, you’ll pick up special weapons that randomly appear on the battlefield. These range from mines you can plant behind your ship, a buzzsaw that gets larger when you charge it, a sniper, a shotgun-like weapon, a laser beam, and a nuke that takes 10 seconds to detonate yet kills all your opponents.

It’s a must to learn how to effectively utilize every weapon, considering that their use is limited and they are extremely lethal when used the right way. You’ll also be able to activate a shield that deflects everything though you can only activate it in short bursts.

In Rocket Wars, you can choose between two control schemes which are easy to pick up and learn. However, the control bindings aren’t the most intuitive. For example, the fire and special weapon buttons are B and Y respectively, which makes it hard to fire both at the same time. In any case, it would have been great to be able to fully customize controller input. For some reason, you can’t also pause the game. Pressing the + button will bring up the main menu which will require you to start match all over again. The control scheme remains the same (press the SL and SR buttons to activate boost) if you’re playing with one joy-con.

Although it’s a couch co-op and PvP, it’s not like you’ll be able to play Rocket Wars with others all the time. Thankfully, the bots in the game are quite good and can give you a challenge regardless of the game mode you’re in.

It’s easy to lament what Rocket Wars flaws and the features it lacks which could have given it a huge interstellar boost. Note that it is solely a singleplayer and couch multiplayer game with no online capabilities. It would have been great to compete against players from around the world by making it a global arcade game.

However, what it provides more than makes up for what it lacks. It’s a solid couch co-op title and a must-have for anyone looking for a fantastic party game to play with friends and family. With that in mind, Rocket Wars is like one of those highly-played games in old-fashioned arcades you and your friends immediately run to after school and during weekends.

Graphics/Sound

Rocket Wars isn’t going to win awards for its visuals but it holds up fairly well and is stable even if everything is exploding on-screen. There are no framerate drops and although the screen can get fairly crowded, you can easily discern your ship thanks to great use of color contrast and minimalist graphics. In addition, the electronic music fully complements the atmosphere the game provides and it will definitely be a joy to your ears.

Conclusion

Overall, Rocket Wars is a solid title and it’s safe to say that it could be a go-to party game if you’re meeting with friends and family. Thanks to its large array of ships, game modes, and weapons, every match you play will provide a unique and distinct experience, helping keep everything fun and fresh at the same time. Though it may lack online features and the ability to customize key bindings, you won’t be disappointed with it.
