Summary

Take your ships into space and enjoy a stunning MMO where you have a fleet of craft to fly and a huge range of missions to complete. Upgrade your ships and take on other players or join your friends and take down the Alien menace on it’s own turf. This amazing game has it all and so much more to enjoy.

Plotline

In the far future mankind has taken to the stars, warp jumps between systems make colonization possible. But being human, the galaxy is divided into factions. To make matters worse, deadly infections run rampant quarantining entire systems, aliens plague every known sector and pirates prey on the weak in open space.

Into this intense universe comes you, a new pilot with a small budget and only the smallest of ships to call your own. But that is just the beginning of your journey and you can end up the master of a fleet of ships and with a reputation as a fearsome pilot. Can you save your world from the alien threat and bring peace once more to an unsettled universe?

Gameplay

Upon entering the game you are taken to a quick tutorial where you are dropped into a fighter and shown the basics of the game. How to move in space and shoot. Once you complete this you will receive a free 1 day licence (more on that later) and then you are able to go and find yourself a new ship and start fighting in space.

There are 3 factions in Star Conflict, the Federation, Empire and Jericho. Each of them has their own unique ships and strengths and weaknesses. The empire favour heavy armor and less shields. The Federation use lighter armor but more shields and are faster. Jericho combine the two but with the best technology in the universe. Though you choose one faction to begin with you can unlock and fly ships for all 3 with no limitation.

One of the first things that stands out to you is the sheer number of ships for each faction. From small stealth fighters to destroyers. Unlocking a ship requires you to reach the maximum level in your current one and it will open up the next rank. Each rank has either an upgrade to your current craft or a completely new one. Gaining xp on ships is easy, simply play it in either PvE or PvP and you gain something called Synergy. This is experience and it accumulates ranks on your ship. The higher your rank the more abilities or things your ship can do.

Each ship has several equipment slots, and the further into the tree you get the more slots and options available to you. The basics are covered for you when you get a ship such as weapons and shields. There are also lots of modules that do different things, such as repair your ship or counter enemy abilities. You can pick the loadout for each ship before you battle and the equipment you have can be easily swapped between them.

Initially you have 3 ship slots available, these are the active ones you will be playing with. Ships not in the active slots are not lost, just not playable when you launch a mission. You can change the active ships whenever you are outside of a fight and this gives you a lot of flexibility.

Every item in your ships can be upgraded. You can choose 1 item at a time to research, and as you play you earn loyalty to the faction whose ship you are flying. This loyalty is spent on the research and there are 4 ranks to an item. Once it is maxed out you can then work on another. Having maxed out modules and weapons can be a big advantage but getting there is relatively easy and of course it’s fun to gain what you need while you play the ships.

As you go along there are also tasks for you to complete for each faction and some neutral parties. These will give a variety of rewards and you can choose to dock your ship with a particular faction to earn loyalty with them as well as credits and other items you may need. The quests are easy to find and there are also weekly challenges to enjoy.

Once you have your ship you can go and launch a mission, there are several types for you to try revolving around PvE and PvP. You can jump into either easily and as scary as it sounds, the PvP is balanced and ships stats are adjusted to make it more enjoyable. In other words an advanced player with a maxed out ship is still killable in PvP and you won’t get one shotted in return.

In terms of PvE there are missions you can run to gain experience, loyalty and items as well as eventually raids on alien ships. The more advanced your ship the more missions available and the better the rewards will be.

There is also the option to fly into opens space, this is where the real treasures can be found. But of course this comes with it’s own dangers too. There is a huge area to explore and monsters to fight, though they are not balanced to what you have so if you find something truly big it might be best to run. You also run the risk of running into other players, who may be nice to you or turn pirate and blow you out of the sky. While it has it’s risks space can also be very rewarding.

There are 2 main currencies in the game, Credits and Standards. Credits are earned in everything you do in space as well as from tasks. Standards are awarded for completing achievements, there are also many ways to find them in game. One of the best features is that you can transfer Credits to Standards, which means you can play completely free and still buy the premium ships or items. Standards are also used to buy a licence which gives many in games bonuses for a limited duration.

Outside of the game you can choose to buy some of the premium ships for real money or buy Standards. Both are available through Steam and the game website. Some ships are only available as a DLC, which means only for real money. These are few and far between and you can still get some amazing ships without the need to spend.

Being an MMO there are also many social options. You can add and chat to friends or do missions together. You can also create a corporation, essentially a guild where you do group activities and get to hang out together. Joining one is free and easy to do.

With a simple yet deep combat system and its relatively easy controls Star Conflict is a great game to get into. There is a lot of depth towards the end game and so many options to truly personalize your fleet. One of the best things is that there are no truly “must have” ships, they are all competitive and you can find one for your playstyle and be competitive yourself in both PvE and PvP.

One of the benefits of being a good quality free to play game is that a lot of people play it. Quite simply there is a huge following for this game. There are lots of people online all the time and you can always find a battle. You can build your own corporation or join another and band together to complete the end game content.

Outside of the game there are lots of active forums, websites and Facebook pages dedicated to Star Conflict. The official website has its own forums too where you can trade information and tactics. So coming into the universe is a welcome feeling and there are so many other players involved that it never feels dull.

Graphics/Sound

Right from the start you can see that Star Conflict has a rich feel and superb quality gameplay. The battles are smooth and simply beautiful to behold. The ships are well designed and you can identify the classes in the game as well as easily in the tech trees. In short it looks stunning and this makes it very fun.

There is an immersive quality to the sound that really brings you in and adds a nice touch to the visuals of the game. The sound of thunder when you open up with certain weapons is thrilling and getting into the action feels and sounds natural.

Conclusion

Building your fleet up is fun and you can enjoy the entire game without spending any real money. In a free to play game this is a rarity.
