Summary

A theft of a “paranormal” nature has brought Bruce, a respectable police officer in East Wales, rushing back to the precinct. It seems that a ghostly inhabitant in Duke of Buckingham’s castle has been accused of stealing the Duke’s priceless family jewels. Fortunately, Bruce isn’t someone who’s spooked easily (as he doesn’t believe in ghosts) and he sets off on this quest to scour every room in the mansion for clues as to who the real thief is. Lend him a hand and together, you can bring the real culprit to justice!

Plotline

Bruce, a police officer in East Wales, was on a well-deserved holiday until a call brought him rushing back to the precinct on the double. It seems that he has a very intriguing case on his hands where the so-called “ghost” of the Duke of Buckingham’s castle has been accused of stealing the Duke’s prized and priceless family jewels. With a “there is no such things as ghosts” mentality firmly in mind, Bruce needs to scour the various rooms in the mansion to find out who’s really behind the theft and bring him or her to justice!

Gameplay

Like most hidden object games out there, the bulk of the gameplay in Secret Investigations: The Fortune Teller Mystery requires you to solve hidden object scenes. These scenes are not made up of the standard word lists. Instead, you’ll get colored pictures of the objects you need to find. However, the tricky thing about this game is that the game also places items that look the same but are differently colored as compared to the list of pictures you’re given to mess with you, but as long as the item is the same, design-wise, then you’ll be fine. The color of the objects doesn’t really matter.

There are also the occasional darkened (night mode) scenes where you are given a narrow beam of light to search for hidden objects. Most objects for these special scenes are hidden in plain sight, but it can pose quite a challenge considering that you might still miss spotting them as you wave your beam of light around the scene.

Interestingly, in this game, there will always be a tool, which is listed in your hidden objects list that you’ll need to find and collect. Once the tool is safely in your inventory, you’ll then need to use it to interact with an area on the scene and unlock a concealed hidden object. For example, there’s a scene whereby you’ll have to find a hammer in order to smash a piggy bank for another hidden objects – the coins inside the piggy bank.

Not to mention, all these scenes are timed scenes. You are given only 180 seconds to find all the items needed which may range from 6 items up to a maximum of 10 items. This does make Secret Investigations: The Fortune Teller Mystery a very challenging and fast-paced game. The time you use to complete a scene is very important in this game. This is because depending on the time left, you’ll be awarded with police badges. You can earn up to 3 badges per scene by the way. These badges are then needed to unlock new subsequent scenes. If you don’t have enough badges to do so, you will then need to return to previous scenes

Furthermore, there are puzzles that are sparsely placed in between scenes, though in Secret Investigations: The Fortune Teller Mystery, there are, admittedly, more scenes than puzzles. The puzzles in this game are made up of a variety of types including the familiar match-3, spot the difference, and other logic-based mini-games. These puzzles, like the scenes, are timed as well. Some puzzles consist of several rounds and the timer doesn’t refresh in between rounds, so be sure to hustle and get those puzzles done as quickly as you can.

If you failed a level, no matter if it’s a scene or a puzzle, you’ll then lose a life. You start with 5 lives and they regenerate over time when they are lost. On the other hand, if you did well in a scene or a puzzle, at the end of it, you’ll then get to choose your bonus. You’ll be presented with 3 identical briefcases and you only can choose 1. Most of the time, you’ll obtain a small sum of coins from these briefcases, but if you’re lucky, you can get more of these coins.

Coins are vital in this game as you’ll need it to purchase 1 of the many power-ups listed on the right side of the screen while in-game. They include hint, magic, freeze and torch. Hint and magic, when used, will highlight one random item from your list. Freeze, on the other hand, helps you by stopping the timer for a few critical seconds. You can use this power-up for puzzles too (unlike the other power-ups). Last but not least, the torch which unlocks later in the game can be used in any of the night mode scenes so you can see the scene better for a brief period of time.

Community

Secret Investigations: The Fortune Teller Mystery has an amazing 100 thousand monthly active players despite being a rather short game... if you play it zealously for a day or two that is, and the fact that this game is a brand new game. That being said, the game has quite a nice albeit small community. If you would like to join, be sure to head over to the game’s Facebook community page.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics are rather unique and nicely-done for Secret Investigations: The Fortune Teller Mystery, though some players may want an option to enlarge the screen (by playing the game in full-screen mode) added to the game. In terms of music, it contains a huge dollop of melancholy and a sense of adventure, especially during the “chorus” part of the music. Although the high quality music is looped, you won’t get tired of it. It’s that good!

Conclusion

In a nutshell, Secret Investigations: The Fortune Teller Mystery is an investigative hidden object game where you’ll help Detective Bruce in solving the case of missing family jewels. Debunk the belief that the ghostly inhabitant of Duke of Buckingham’s castle is responsible for the theft and search all the rooms in the castle extensively for clues. Piece together what you’ve found and you’ll be able to identify the real thief.
