Summary
Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft features the remastered version of the iconic Tomb Raider games, namely the first three games of the series, along with their respective DLCs. Playing as the adventurous British archeologist, Lara Croft, you’ll venture into the depths of various hazardous ruins in search of hidden treasures. Complete platforming challenges, take on ravenous wild animals, solve ancient mysteries, and discover secret levels!
Gameplay
Tomb Raider, at its core, is an adventure-driven 3D platformer with a fairly more open world than some other titles within the genre of its time. This means that the gameplay often involves a lot of running (sometimes, to go through an opened door before it closes), which could require some amount of speed and jumping from one platform to another, as well as going through various obstacle challenges that may require precise timing and some finesse.
Unfortunately, the controls here can be a bit awkward by default, mostly no thanks to its wonky camera angles. For the unfamiliar, aside from the usual arrow keys to move (usual for old games, that is), you’ll use the Ctrl key to interact with the environment, such as to pull a lever or to shoot, and the Alt key to dodge or jump. You can even combine both the Ctrl and the Alt keys to make Lara jump and grab hold of the edge of a tall ledge so she can pull herself up. Swimming is another ball game, with the Alt key being used to swim forward and the arrow keys orient Lara underwater.
All these and more can be learned through the game's nifty tutorial at Lara’s Home. That said, you can choose whether you’d prefer the old “Tank” controls or the new “Modern” ones in this remaster – it’s entirely up to you!
Similar to most 3D platformers, Tomb Raider contains interesting platforming puzzles and challenges, including the famed labyrinth, City of Khamoon, where the whole level is one massive environmental puzzle, or the much hated (due to its difficulty) Aldwych that’s set in the London tube station, no thanks its plethora of puzzles - some unique; some classic - and that ever constant question of what to do next.
Tomb Raider also has some light combat where you will need to fight various hostile creatures ranging from wolves and bats to mummies and even dinosaurs using Lara’s iconic dual pistols! Thanks to its console roots, the game includes auto-targeting, so you simply have to face the enemy and, naturally, be within range to shoot them. There’s no limited ammo or such nonsense here, so feel free to “waste bullets”.
Enemies aren’t trees in this game either and will attack Lara when she is spotted… sometimes, they will swarm her. Due to this, you might want to prevent Lara from getting overwhelmed and dying by using her many cool dodge moves. She could cartwheel sideways, leap backward, or do a backflip. Of course, she could also do her famous move - jumping sideways and shooting at enemies, too.
There are consumables in this game as well that you can pick up and store in Lara’s inventory. To use them, simply tap the Esc key to access the inventory. There’s a compass too, that you can check for directions… and no, there’s no map in this game, though it’s probably unlikely you’ll need one.
Tomb Raider is also known for its secret levels, with most containing a helpful health restoration pack, but unless you refer to a walkthrough or are familiar with their location, they might be tricky to find, so keep an eye out!
Graphics/ Sound
It’s plain to see that this classic has been lovingly remastered for the modern times, and yet, the game still lets you choose between the old polygon look and the new, more polished, and very much gorgeous version by pressing F1. However, the game is riddled with massive camera glitches that make orienting Lara quite frustrating to a player, especially during tight platforming parts with little room to navigate… though, the issues aren’t really anything game-breaking. There are also some spots in the game that can be a bit too dark in the modern version.
In terms of sound, the game opts for its original sound assets, providing players with a blast back to the past. Unfortunately, similar to the original, the sound leveling in a remaster might not be as smooth as one might hope. The team could probably improve this aspect a bit in a future patch.
Conclusion
All in all, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft is a faithful remaster of the originals, providing both new and old fans of the franchise a chance to experience and re-experience the start of what made the Tomb Raider series great! The remaster may not be flawless, but it’s definitely worth a play.
