Summary

Gone are the days of rhythm games where you hit or hold keys. Today, many of them evolved to deliver unique experiences, while one made itself an icon by being a roguelike RPG. In a way, the genre is in the state of reforming itself, but at the same time, it has already found a loyal fanbase yearning for more.

Aaero is one of the games in the genre that provides entirely new gameplay mechanics, managing to set itself apart from its peers. It’s a rhythm/music game at heart but also doubles or appears to be something akin to a 3D space shooter. Thanks to its electronic dubstep soundtrack, the game is a joy to the ears while delivering an incredibly challenging experience.

Now available on the Nintendo Switch, should you give Aaero and its soundtrack a shot? Before you decide, let’s take a look at what it provides:

Gameplay

In Aaero, you’re placed in the cockpit of what seems to be a spacecraft traversing a uniquely-designed alien world. There’s no lore or story to speak of, and you’ll dive in straight into the action. Before that, though, the tutorial videos will orient you to the basic controls. In a nutshell, you’ll only need the two sticks on both joy-cons and the ZR button. If your joy-con suffers from the perennial problem of drifting, don’t worry - it didn’t bother me throughout my playthrough.

Aaero is mainly a rhythm game mixed in with casual shooting mechanics. The rhythm aspect mainly lies on ribbons scattered across each level, and you need to “follow” them by moving your craft around using your joy-cons. Thankfully, there’s no need to be precise - only a specific range of accuracy is required. Nevertheless, this is a tricky endeavor, considering that the ribbons loop and change paths quite a lot. This aspect affects the music that accompanies the level, rendering it out of tune. Moreover, if you fail to hit the ribbons after a certain amount of time, your ship blows up. If you consistently manage to get it done, you’ll earn more points and increase your score multiplier.

Meanwhile, the shooting mechanics are relatively simple. All you have to do is run the crosshair that appears when you move the right joy-con over enemies that occasionally appear and move throughout the screen. You can fire up to eight projectiles at once, and when you’ve locked on to your targets, press ZR. Though it sounds like a child can quickly master the game, enemies are rather hard to deal with in Aaero. You can’t dodge when an enemy moves in. In contrast, some enemies (especially the frightening bosses) require you to shoot multiple times to take them down, which can be pretty tricky considering you have the rhythm and navigational aspects to be concerned about.

Finally, there are also parts wherein you have to navigate different areas carefully. For example, there are parts that suddenly close off when you approach them, requiring you to dodge. Usually, these suddenly appear, and they trigger in sync with the music. These range from falling structures and prison bars that close off a large chunk of space, requiring you to quickly fly to a different area.

These sequences, paired with the electronic dubstep music, are exhilarating. You’ll need to multitask and make precise movements with your joy-cons to aim and shoot while dodging traps and closed-off areas. All things considered, it is a difficult game and you will undoubtedly finish certain levels through memorization. Even finishing the normal mode is a challenge, and there are unlockable Advanced and Master levels for players who want to push themselves to the limit. For those who want an easy experience, thankfully, the Chillout mode exists.

Your score at the end of every level is tallied by the accuracy rate of tracking ribbons, as well as the enemies you’ve taken down. If you’ve reached a certain number of points, you’ll earn a specific number of stars. Of course, you’ll be driven to earn as many stars as you can.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Aaero looks fantastic on the Nintendo Switch. The art style is impressive, looking like a merge of futuristic tech in a ruined, ancient alien world. Despite the high fidelity and impressive graphics, the game runs pretty smoothly; there are no framerate drops or visual issues to speak of. You can also change your craft on the main menu, and there are four to choose from.

Apart from the impressive visuals, the songs stand out as well. Each level has a theme song of its own, and the effects, ribbons traces, and environmental interactions (like traps) are all in sync with the songs, making it seem like the levels were crafted with the music in mind. Some of the tracks include Bass Cannon by Flux Pavillion, Katy on a Mission by Katy B, and Sequence by Neosignal.

Conclusion

Overall, Aaero is a quirky take on the rhythm genre, delivering an enjoyable yet challenging experience, more so than most of its peers. It requires total concentration, and its licensed songs are a total fit to the atmosphere and gameplay elements it provides.

Aaero is available today on the Nintendo Switch, and if you’re looking for a new rhythm game, we recommend adding it to your backlog today.
