Not Tonight 2

Summary
Not Tonight 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to a breakout indie title. Filled with satirical political humor, the game features a Papers, Please-style gameplay, but this time, it’s set in a dysfunctional US – or what’s left of it – instead of the UK. In this game, you play as friends of Eduardo who are scrambling to accumulate the necessary documents to prove he’s a US citizen. Join them as they travel through a divided US, meeting many wacky people along the way. Will they be able to save Eduardo from being wrongly incarcerated?
Plotline
A band of friends, namely Eduardo, Malik, Mari, and Kevin, decided to participate in the Seattle Protest to reclaim democracy and reunite the US. However, an unmarked van stopped right in front of them and quickly bundled Eduardo into its embrace before speeding off.
Stunned by what had happened, the friends received a text message from the Martyrs, the “other” US government that had claimed the southern states after the US was internally divided, asking them to provide proof of Eduardo’s US citizenship, namely his passport and his family tree, to be handed in manually at the gulag in Miami, which is literally on the other side of the country.
The friends scrambled to find and collect the documents needed to free Eduardo from being wrongly imprisoned, but this means a road trip across a dangerous and divided US with Malik trying to secure Eduardo’s family tree and Kevin tracking down Eduardo’s grandmother who supposedly had his passport.
Gameplay
Like its predecessor, Not Tonight 2 has a gameplay that’s similar to Papers, Please. In this game, you’ll be checking the validity of IDs and tickets as a BouncR. Similar to “Not Tonight”, the game starts off easy enough, but then it ramps up the changes by introducing new elements into the game such as fake IDs and ID validity, as well as a variety of tickets depending on the location you’re working as a BouncR at.
For instance, at NYC, you’ll need to play a rhythm mini-game to let customers entry into the club, while at the plague-afflicted Chicago, you’ll need to check for masks, only admitting people who are wearing one. At New Camelot, you even get to operate an arbalest that allows you to shoot down wizards on balloons trying to gain entry to a knights-only club. However, there are points where the mini-games seem to be more luck-oriented than skill-oriented, resulting in some frustrating moments for sure.
There are also times when you may need to manage two queues, one for regulars and one for VIPs. You won’t want the VIPs to wait too long, but the regulars will also leave the queue if you make them wait for too long. For VIPs, you may have to do additional checks like getting the right password or cross-checking their name on their ID to the names on a guest list.
As a BouncR, your earning for that night is tied to how many customers you let in. However, there’s a bit of a catch – you’ll need to fulfill the criteria needed as requested by your employer as well as the objectives (well, actually one objective and two bonus objectives, if you want to be precise) listed on the little Post-It note on your clipboard.
For the rejected customers, you may also want to highlight which part of the criteria they have failed to qualify for, just to prevent them from asking you to check again, essentially holding up the line. Though, some customers may still try to do so. There’s a time limit here as well. Although there’s no visible timer, you do get reminders when certain time has passed.
Now, depending on the difficulty level you’ve chosen before diving into the game, you may get some amount of leeway when it comes to adhering to the requirements. Making a few mistakes may only get you a warning, but if you’ve made a grievous amount of them, then your pay will definitely be docked.
There are also three additional quests that you can complete for every location you visit, thanks to this odd little app, MapO. You’ll get a score between A and C, along with the associated rewards, ranging from extra cash to free health restores, depending on how many out of the three objectives you’ve completed. Note that you’ll lose health every time you take on a BouncR job, which is basically every night since you can’t skip a job, and it seems like the only reliable way to restore health is by completing these MapO tasks.
Getting an A grade is definitely preferred because not only will you be able to get all three rewards for completing the three quests, but you’ll also be able to use you’re A grade like a currency to buy items from the MapO shop, which is located within the BouncR app on your phone for some reason. However, this can sometimes be easier said than done, mainly because the quests you need to complete can be quite vague, sometimes resulting in missed opportunities to complete a quest.
As pointed out before as well, Not Tonight 2 puts you on two separate adventures, namely Malik’s and Kevin’s, as they try to obtain the documents needed to free their friend, Eduardo, from the Martyrs. However, they both took different routes to get to Miami where Eduardo was held so you’ll get to visit different major cities across the US and see how the division among the country has changed the landscape and the people there.
Graphics/ Sound
Not Tonight 2 still features the much-beloved pixel art that is prominent in the original, but of course, there has been noticeable upgrades, in terms of the smoothness of the pixels and the shading. Each location is well-designed and distinct from each other as well. The sound in this game is as great as ever, offering lots of ambiance that brings each city you stop at to life! Of course, if you’re into dance music, you’ll be able to enjoy a selection of great tracks while working as a BouncR.
Conclusion
All in all, Not Tonight 2 managed to retain all the best parts of the original game, including its satirical and dark, political humor; amazing sound and pixel art, as well as it’s deceptively simple yet entertaining gameplay, which also featured some interesting new mechanics, while fitting everything perfectly into a whole new setting. However, as many have pointed out, the game seems to have a shallower story here and that it is more linear than the original.
So, if you’re up for more “Not Tonight”, this sequel is definitely a game that you’ll want to play. It’s offers some lighthearted fun that feels more arcade-y than the original.
