Plotline

Although there isn’t really a storyline here except for the fact that you’re just starting out a new online sticker designing and printing business, the game does feature a variety of mini-stories shared by different customers that you can gather bits of as you receive new orders from them. Once you’ve completed a mini-story, you’ll be rewarded with a photo showing you how your stickers have made a difference in their lives. It’s quite satisfying to follow each mini-story to their respective completion, and the writing is excellent here.

Gameplay

Running an online sticker business is actually quite simple, and involves the simple cycle of designing stickers, printing them out, packing the orders, and posting the packages. First, you’ll need to design a couple of stickers to put up on your online store before the customers will start pouring in.

The process of designing a sticker in this game is made incredibly simple, thanks to the many tools available, such as the ability to flip stickers horizontally or vertically, or adjust their size. Besides different types of sticker paper, you’re also given a plethora of premade sticker elements from a selection of themes ranging from nature to animals (including dinosaurs), to even space, to mix and match to form the sticker you want.

There are even multiple color choices available for the stickers’ background and outline, in addition to certain texts that you can add to your sticker designs. All of which, along with new sticker elements and designs, can be unlocked via the Upgrades section. You can also buy parcel upgrades, like new packaging material and color, new sticker paper type, more sticker slots for your store, or even candies that you can give as a free gift to your customers.

Depending on what upgrades you’re getting, can cost either hearts or money. Hearts are earned whenever a sticker element levels up, and to earn XP, you’ll need to have that sticker element added to a sticker you’re selling. Only sold stickers will earn XP for each sticker component that they are made up from.

Money is earned from selling stickers as well. How much you get mostly depends on two factors: 1. The size of the sticker and 2. The type of paper used for the sticker – there are naturally many different types of sticker paper, each adding a different kind of effect on the stickers, whether it is glossy paper or a sparkly one.

Anyway, once you’re done with the design, you just need to save your sticker, and if there’s still space at your online store, it’ll automatically be listed on your store, so you can simply wait for the orders to start to roll in before you start printing them out.

You can actually save a whole lot of stickers in this game as long as you have the store space for them. If not, you could always delist a sticker from the store to free up space or spend money to upgrade your store so you can list more stickers. Note that you can actually save the stickers you’ve designed to your actual computer and print them out to use in real life if you want.

Now, there are actually two kinds of ways you can approach the sticker-printing process – the easy way or the hard way (to maximize profits). The easy way is, of course, the most convenient whereby you simply choose the right sticker paper to use, click on the stickers you want to print (if you need multiple copies, click multiple times), and the game will automatically fill up the paper with the stickers you want. It’s also okay to print extras if you have the space for them. Once you’re happy with the result, you can just hit Print and get the sheet of stickers printed out.

However, there’s a catch here - the game will automatically place the stickers for you onto the sheet without maximizing the space. You’ll end up with a printed paper with plenty of empty spaces. This is where the “hard way” comes in!

For the hard way, you manually add (or you could use the game’s help from time to time), adjust, and rearrange the stickers you want to print in such a way that every possible space on the sticker sheet is fully utilized. You can even mix stickers here, using smaller stickers to fill in the gaps between the bigger stickers. The game also helpfully indicates to you the potential turnover for that particular sheet of stickers as opposed to the printing costs. You’ll want that potential turnover to be as high as possible to maximize your profits.

Now, this process can be tedious, to say the least, but in return, you’ll get the most bang for your buck. Of course, doing this can be helpful at first, since there are plenty for you to unlock, and you may be eager to quickly unlock them all. Though, once you approach the end-game, there’s really no need to push for maximum profits, namely because it can be very hard to lose money in the sticker business. not make a profit in this game, so it’s completely alright just to take it easy and let the computer do its thing.

That being said, if you have an OCD-like compulsion to maximize space and profits due to years of playing shop sims, the hard way is one way of doing things in this game as well. Similar to the sticker design interface, there’s a floppy button here that allows you to save the sticker sheet you’ve designed onto your actual computer so you can print them out yourself if you have a sticker-friendly printer.

After printing out the stickers, you’ll then need to start packing those orders. As a rule of thumb in any business, it’s okay to give extra but never less. So, if you could take a bit of a loss, it’s completely alright to send out more stickers than the customer ordered, but never – never! – send out fewer stickers than requested… or even send them the wrong ones. By giving out extra stickers, you’ll simply level up the sticker design faster since gifted stickers that are sent out will be counted as a “sold sticker”.

As mentioned, you could also include free candy if you want too, but note that giving out free gifts will likely cut into your profit margins. You might want to do this sparingly here, especially at the start when money can be a bit tight, since it doesn’t really change the outcome of the gameplay in any way. Once you’re done with all the orders, make sure to remember to send the packages out, or you won’t be paid!

You have some time to fulfill each order you get – it doesn’t have to be on the same day you received the order – but if you dragged your feet too long, you might find yourself forgetting to send out the packages before the deadline, losing out on some profits and risking angering a customer.

To make things even more interesting, the customers you get in this game aren’t all soulless AIs generated by a name generator. Sticky Business provides a host of unique customers with their own life stories to tell, and they do that via the orders they send in. From their notes, you can learn more about what your customers are going through and how your stickers have made such a difference in their lives. Sometimes, you may even get requests for custom stickers that if you manage to fulfill them, will further progress their respective storylines.

Designing stickers, along with several activities in this game like sticker printing, packaging, and posting, will progress time, with the sticker designing process consuming the most time of all. Make sure to allocate your daily time well, so you can do everything you want within the day. As pointed out before, most of the orders you get don’t have to be completed within the same day you received the order, so you will have a bit more time to prep whatever stickers you need for your customers.

Graphics/ Sound

Sticky Business has amazing graphics, complete with a simple, clean-cut interface and a vibrant color palette that matches the game’s cozy theme. There are lots of sticker designs that you can have fun mixing and matching to create your own stickers here. Although you can’t draw out your own designs, nor can you add in your own texts, the premade ones are sufficient for you to come up with some pretty creative and cool stickers to sell.

In terms of sound, the game features a range of soothing soundtracks that work well to provide a relaxing environment for you to run your own online sticker business.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, Sticky Business is definitely one of the more iconic cozy games out there. Not only will you be able to give your creativity free rein, but you’ll also get to have fun running – and chilling – a simple online sticker business where profits are very easy to get, and the customers are all pretty cool people, whom you can learn more about via the little notes they send in. The tie-in between the game and actual sticker-printing is very well-done too, allowing players who have the facilities to print out stickers that they have designed within the game so they could use the stickers in real life.
