Plan B: Terraform

Summary
Plan B: Terraform is a resource management and logistics game where the goal is to set up production facilities to both supply the three colonies with all the necessities and to pump greenhouse gasses into the planet’s atmosphere to raise the temperature and eventually terraform the place. Set up efficient production chains and logistics to produce and move various processed goods and raw materials to where they need to be!
Gameplay
Plan B: Terraform provides a tutorial to help guide you through the basics of the game, but as you progress, you’ll unlock more technologies, some of which might take a bit of trial and error to figure out.
In this game, you progress by achieving the goals indicated by the level. The goals can vary from milestone to milestone, ranging from increasing the temperature of the planet to growing your population by fulfilling demands from colonies, whether it is to bring in a steady stream of supplies or to remove waste efficiently. Every goal you complete will level you up, usually unlocking a hoist of new technologies that will either help you improve your production capability or logistics, or unlock a new resource that you can then use to produce important goods that the colonies may need or to further terraform the planet to make it more habitable for your pioneers.
Of course, like any game, you’ll start off simple with a few production chains, including mining excavators and factories, but it can quickly get increasingly complex with more production chains that get increasingly interconnected, requiring materials produced by other productions or needing entire new industries set up in specific locations, such as setting up the ice extractors at the north and south poles of the planet.
Due to this, it’s crucial to have good logistics. At the start, you will only have access to roads and trucks which aren’t exactly an efficient setup due to the insane number of trucks you’ll need to send a regular supply of materials to a specific production facility if the distance is long enough. Thankfully, at one point, you’ll unlock the rail system, allowing you to produce and set up railways and have trains, instead of trucks, transport goods to where they need to be at higher speeds.
Considering that production doesn’t stop automatically here and the fact that resources are finite in this game, it may take a lot of time pauses just to make sure every part of your industries aren’t overproducing structures or items that you don’t need. There’s currently no way to recycle overproduced items, such as roads that you may have long replaced with rails or the thousands of trucks you’ve produced prior to having trains. Thankfully, this probably wouldn’t be a huge issue since resources are abundant on the planet – it’s just that you’ll have to redo your logistics to accommodate mining or production operations that are further from your original location once a resource is exhausted.
As an early access title, Plan B: Terraform is still a work-in-progress and it shows. For starters, slightly changing the road you’ve built will mess up all the truck routes that go through that stretch of road, requiring you to manually “reset” all of them. Not to mention, you can’t disable buildings, especially once you have enough of a component or a structure either.
As mentioned before, the game also requires a lot of micro-management at the moment as exhausted extractors will need to be replaced, sometimes pretty constantly once your operations grow big enough and well, the game doesn’t let you know if an extractor isn’t doing anything anymore so you’ve got to manually hunt them down.
Graphics/ Sound
Plan B: Terraform features graphics that are visually pleasing to the eye. The (mostly) toned down colors match well with its focus on creating a chill and relaxing gaming experience. There are also three filters that will allow you to view the planet in different ways, and a zoom option so you can easily move from planet view to surface view. However, it would be nice to have a bit more zoom options, especially in between the planet view and the surface view.
In terms of sound, you’ll get to listen to a selection of (mostly orchestral) music that fits well with its sci-fi theme and provides that relaxing atmosphere for players.
Conclusion
All in all, if you love games where you get to optimize production chains in a fun and chill way and don’t mind the micro-management needed to run things at tip-top shape, then Plan B: Terraform is the game for you! The game may be an early access title but shows a lot of promise and is constantly getting new patches, bringing updates that improve the game in many ways.
