Summary

Smooth Operators 2 is a 2D tower-based business management game where you try your hand at establishing the most profitable customer service center from the ground up! Manage your employees and provide them with various amenities and professional development, sign on new clients, research new office improvements, and most important of all, make a ton of money to fund your business expansion!

Gameplay

Smooth Operators 2 is a fairly easy game to get into, especially if you have some experience playing tycoon games before. Similar to most tycoon games, you’ll start off small, hiring a handful of employees, and trying to complete the orders that are sent to you from your clients by the end of the work day.

As a customer service-based company, you’ll have to handle various customer service-related jobs, from taking inbound calls to making outbound calls, and even dealing with any backoffice work. You’ll need to hire enough employees to fulfill each role respectively just so you can hit the daily quota set by your clients. Unlike some tycoon games though, there’s no choosing which employee to hire since the game doesn’t provide unique individual stats, meaning that employees are virtually indistinguishable from one another when you first hire them. Of course, from time to time, there will be events that will significantly change the daily workload you can expect and you’ll be expected to prepare for the events accordingly.

What if you can’t reach the quota, you may wonder? Well, clients don’t typically like being let down, which would damage the trust you may have built with them. As per the contract, there’s also this little clause about a penalty that will be imposed if you fail to reach the targets by a pretty large margin.

As your business expands, so will your office building. You’ll need to add in more rooms to allow the hiring of more employees just so you can accept more orders from your clients and of course, make more money! Employees are very particular about the room they work in, and if it’s the “wrong” one, their efficiency will be decreased. The same case goes for employee requests that you get. Denying a request often results in poor morale and lower productivity.

Inversely, there are multiple ways you can increase the efficiency of your employees. You can, for instance, “upgrade” their skills via some personal development, which thankfully is instantaneous in this game. You can also upgrade the room they work in, boosting morale and hence, their productivity. Hiring enough Janitors to clean their workstations, enough handymen to maintain the offices, and having IT support to help fix any computer issues will result in higher efficiency, due to zero downtime, as well.

Not to mention, there are also the needs of your employees that you’ll need to fulfill. To prevent them from spending way too much time on lunch breaks, you can set up a cafeteria of some sort so they can quickly grab a bite to eat. Of course, you’ll need to set up restrooms and although this is entirely optional, recreational rooms for your employees to wind down. Some of these rooms, or corridors, can also be adorned with various accessories which will increase the morale of every employee that passes through.

At the beginning, you will only have access to the most basic of… well, everything, but by investing in hiring a bunch of Project Managers, you can research new useful upgrades such as the flowtubes or teleportation devices, which makes traveling between floors so much faster and easier as compared to elevators. You’ll also need to research new floors so that you can keep expanding your company upwards, especially once the ground level is completely filled.

All of these upgrades, new rooms, and even new hires will cost a lot of money, some may even require upkeep. This is why it’s crucial to ensure you have enough revenue pouring in to sustain your operations. You’ll start off with a single client, but once you have a bunch of Business Development employees on the payroll, you can then start looking for new clients, with hopefully more profitable offers, or a way to negotiate a higher workload from your existing clients. You can freely drop clients as well if they aren’t paying enough – there’s no penalty for breaking a contract here.

Sometimes though, times can be hard and you may need a little financial pick-me-up to help pull your company out of debt. The game offers a ton of loans, each with different interest rates and loan repayment schemes. However, all loans have one similar policy – they will only charge you the agreed-upon daily installment after the 5th day. So, you’ll want to plan accordingly and make sure you don’t spend all of your profits.

To help you keep track of everything, the game helpfully provides you with real-time charts while a final report is presented to you at the end of each day. The game has a lot of sass too and is quite sarcastic in many of the tooltips.

As fun as the game is, Smooth Operators 2, as well as the original title, feels rather simplistic as a tycoon game – it’s definitely more idle-based and less in-depth than some tycoons I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing before. The game seems to me to be more suited for the mobile platform.

Graphics/ Sound

The game features pixel-style graphics that look great, especially if you love old-school-like aesthetics. Personally, however, I think the devs should have called the “food room” a “Pantry” instead of a “Kiosk”. The soundtrack here is both upbeat and catchy to listen to. There’s plenty of ambiance too, giving you the feeling of a hectic customer service center where phones are ringing almost constantly.

Conclusion

To put it simply, Smooth Operators 2 is an idle-like business management tycoon that’s very easy to dive into and play. The game offers fun and satisfying progression, providing you with plenty of upgrades and research just so you can min-max your way to becoming a customer service mogul!
