Summary
Honestly, it would be an understatement to say there are plenty of Metroidvania games today. The genre is crowded with many titles, some established while others are relatively new, hoping to make their mark on the industry. One of which is The Weird Dream, a captivating 2D Metroidvania adventure that thrusts players into the role of a mysterious rabbit armed with a chainsaw navigating the ruins of Alpha City.
With its intriguing plotline, tight gameplay mechanics, and distinctive art style, it stands out as a must-play for fans of the genre. The game is published by WhisperGames, which has a stellar track record with Chained Echoes and Rising Lords under their belts. Moreover, the game is developed by the relatively new AmberDragon Studio, and, in a way, they made a decent debut.
So, should The Weird Dream be something you should dive into, or is it a nightmare of a game? Well, let’s check out what it has to offer.
Plotline
Set in the desolate landscapes of Alpha City, The Weird Dream puts players into a destroyed world full of mystery. As the enigmatic rabbit protagonist, players will embark on a quest to uncover the secrets behind the city's destruction. The game’s story unfolds through encounters with long-dead NPCs, and pieces of the story are revealed through old TVs scattered throughout the environment along with monster profiles.
This storytelling method adds layers of intrigue, immersing players in a world where every discovery brings them closer to unraveling the truth behind the city's demise. The tale, though cryptic at times, keeps players engaged, driving them forward in their quest for answers. I didn’t find any character particularly interesting, but the entire narrative pushed me to dive deeper and further seek answers.
Gameplay
At the heart of The Weird Dream lies its engaging gameplay mechanics, blending exploration, combat, and character progression seamlessly. Players will traverse the varying environments of the now-ruined Alpha City, dealing with obstacles, enemies, and traps that will hinder their progress. For example, there are areas where there are spikes on the ground, forcing you to respawn to a said area. Meanwhile, there are also inconspicuous and out-of-view areas you need to find since they hold power-ups and abilities. This requires you to explore every inch of the map because you’ll be missing out.
Combat in The Weird Dream is both fluid and satisfying. Armed with a chainsaw wielded by the protagonist like some sort of sword, players can unleash a flurry of attacks on their foes, with every sixth hit adding a charge to a power gauge. Once filled, players can unleash devastating special attacks, turning the tide of battle in their favor. The variety of enemies keeps combat fresh and challenging. Plus, The Weird Dream’s boss fights are well-made; they require a lot of strategy and calculated moves, given they are not just one-dimensional opponents. Furthermore, players can’t just button-mash their way to win - every move has to be calculated.
In addition to combat, platforming plays a significant role in the gameplay experience. Players must navigate treacherous terrain, utilizing their agility and reflexes to overcome obstacles and reach new areas. The tight controls and responsive mechanics ensure that every jump and dash feels precise, adding to the sense of satisfaction when conquering challenging sections. It takes a while to get used to some of the mechanics, particularly the dash and down-attack one that lets you extend your time in the air. Thankfully, the game’s controls are relatively straightforward and easy to learn, with ample controller support.
One of the game's standout features is its robust character growth mechanics. Throughout their journey, players will acquire new skills and abilities by collecting ability orbs scattered across the map. This progression system adds depth to the gameplay, empowering players to tailor their play style to suit their preferences. In addition, the game also has a well-made inventory and item system where you can consume, cook, and purchase items that can heal and provide a variety of buffs.
Graphics/Sound
Visually, The Weird Dream adopts an anime-inspired art style, a major deviation from its peers that utilize pixel art. While the graphics may appear simplistic at first glance, they exude a sense of originality and eccentricity that perfectly complements the game's rather dark yet colorful atmosphere. The character designs, particularly those of the bosses, are striking and memorable, contributing to the game's visual appeal.
As players progress, they'll encounter diverse environments, each meticulously crafted to offer a unique gameplay experience. From dilapidated city streets to overgrown ruins, the world is teeming with secrets waiting to be uncovered.
In terms of sound design, The Weird Dream delivers. From the eerie ambient sounds of the desolate city to the adrenaline-pumping music that accompanies intense combat encounters, every sound contributes to the game's atmospheric immersion. Although the jump and attack sound effects feel quite repetitive, this is more of an annoyance than an actual issue.
Conclusion
In conclusion, The Weird Dream is a standout title in the Metroidvania genre, offering a well-made blend of engaging gameplay and an intriguing narrative. With its robust character growth mechanics, tight combat and platforming elements, and memorable boss encounters, it's a must-play for fans of the genre. Whether you're drawn in by its intriguing plotline or fast-paced gameplay, The Weird Dream is a requirement in every gamer’s library.
