Plotline

A couple, with the wife is expecting, got lost in the forest. However, they are caught in the middle of a thunderstorm with the baby is coming! As they stumble along, trying to escape from the storm, they found an abandoned hut. The couple moved in and the baby… or more accurately, the babies, since they are twins, are delivered! From there, you will be the one writing the story of this family as well as 2 other siblings who will be joining your village soon… just make sure you write them a good one!

Gameplay

Rather than taking a simple village-building approach like other city-building games, Village Life focuses more on the people – the community, living in the village, making it a very unique and appealing social experience!

In this game, you’ll not only need to expand your village’s population and size, you’ll actually need to take care of each individual villager’s needs, no matter if he’s an adult or a mere baby! First thing’s first, the phrase “there’s nowhere like home” is a very important one in Village Life. Thus, you’ll need to keep your villagers sheltered by building huts for them to have a roof over their heads, leading to increasing their happiness bar (the yellow colored bar right underneath your villager’s portraits). The basic home can only support up to 2 individuals but as you level up, you’ll unlock better and bigger huts to house more villagers. You can also upgrade your current homes to fit in more!

Next, you’ll need to address to the growling stomachs and the dry mouths in the village! Assign water gathering and foraging tasks to your villagers by clicking on the stones at the riverside to get water and clicking on the strawberry bush, or any food sources, to gather food. However, the processes may take some time to finish though. You’ll just need to patiently wait for the duration to finish or you can speed things up using gems, which can be bought using real money or can be earned in small quantities via watching partner videos or completing achievements.

Once the gathering and foraging processes are finished, you’ll just need to click on the basket or buckets of supplies to collect them. The water will later be stored in the water barrel, whereby thirsty villagers can go to quench their thirst while the food will be stored in the food storage, whereby hungry villagers can go to sate their hunger. Keeping enough food and water around in the village to fill belly of your villagers is vital in ensuring their happiness – do remember that!

Warmth is another aspect that you’ll need to take care of. To light up the campfire in your village, you’ll need wood and flint, which can be obtained from trees and flint reserve near to your village. Once the fire is up and burning, you need to ensure that the fire keeps burning or at least, you have enough resource to relight the fire if needed. Furthermore, bear in mind that the more villagers you have, the bigger fires you’ll then need!

Once your villagers’ basic needs are addressed to, you’ll also need to collect other resources for crafting tools at the workshop and constructing buildings! These resources include vines, tin bars, mud, wooden planks and many more! Thankfully, resources are abundant in the area around your village - you’ll just need to get your villagers to go and collect them!

You’ll be storing all these items in a general storage area, unlike food and water. Each different item will occupy a space in the storage area and they can be stored in batches of 50. If an item exceeds 50, it’ll take up another slot in the storage area. Do note that there are limited spots in your storage and as you level up, you’ll soon realize that there are plenty more variety of resources that you’ll soon need to collect. Luckily, you are given the option to sell your unwanted items for coins and you can free up a space in the process in this game.

Now that you have all of the resources you need, you can start building up your village in Village Life! To build, you’ll need to spend some happiness to place the foundation of the building on the ground, fill in all the materials needed and assign a villager or two to get it built up. Buildings in this game can be separated into 2 main groups – houses and fun buildings. Houses are of course the dwellings that you need to build for your villagers to stay in. Fun buildings, on the other hand, are buildings that help boost up the happiness bar of any carefree villagers in your village and these buildings experience wear and tear. You’ll need to ‘rebuild’ them after using them for a number of times.

Carefree villagers in Village Life are people, who have all their needs and demands fulfilled - you can easily see what their needs are by clicking on each individual villager and looking at the thought bubble in his/her portrait. This is applicable to children and babies too. Carefree people tend to use fun buildings or objects to increase their happiness, hence, remember to cycle through your villagers to see what each of them want from time to time!

Once these carefree people have their happiness bar filled or maxed out, the sun in their portraits will rise up and you can click on it to collect the happiness for your sun shrine. Sun shrine is technically your experience bar in this game while happiness is your experience points. When sun shrine is filled, you’ll automatically level up. Each level up brings new resources for you to unlock, new decorations and buildings to construct as well as an additional 1 villager slot to the total number of allowed villagers in your village.

Getting every villager happy in your village is one of the goals in Village Life… another goal is to increase the population of your village in order to make it grow! To do this, you’ll need to hook up your villager with a villager from your friends’ village and you’ll need the love shack! This is not a building that you can build though – it is just the famous/infamous place that your in-love virtual villagers use to make babies. You’ll get to choose whether you’d like to have twins or triplets, which will cost gems, or you can just go with the free default of a single baby. If you want to select the baby’s gender, you can as well… by paying a mere 5 gems! After the female villager is pregnant, she will deliver the baby after 24 hours, or you can opt for immediate birth by coughing up 32 gems. Take note that while being pregnant, your villager will not be able to do any tasks.

After the required period of time the baby is finally out! You’ll need to give him/her a name and feed him/her milk. The baby will grow each day until are ready to work and have babies of their own! Not to mention, Village Life also provides a family tree for each villager so you can see how your villagers are all connected. Moreover, each villager has inherited attributes (skills that reduce task time) that can be potentially transferred to their offsprings as well. So, selective hook-ups with your friends may be a great option to get the offspring with the skills that your village needs!

The social aspect in Village Life is very important too… to the point that the social interaction it requires feels ‘forced’. It is virtually impossible to play the game alone, except if you plan on spending real cash or if you have the patience of a 100-year-old tortoise! Neighbors or friends play a huge role in thie game as you will need to request items from them, such as building materials and certain resources. You will need to have at least a friend who plays along with you to give your villagers a chance to date, marry and have babies too!

There are also achievements that you can acquire to earn yourself some free gems; quests, including fun story quests, to complete; and Maya’s market to buy village décor to make your village look amazing. You’ll even get to move to a new location (the riverside) to set up a new village after your current one reached its maximum capacity as well!

Community

Village Life boasts of having 19 million monthly active users and has almost 2 million likes on its Facebook fan page. This is no surprise considering that this game is very fun to play with, especially if you’re playing with a band of reliable friends! If you would like to meet and add your fellow players, you could head over to the fan page and check it out for yourself! Furthermore, the page also posts updates on the game on a regular basis and there are even weekly “Village of the Week” contests, whereby you stand a chance of earning up to 50 gems, provided that you participated, of course!

Graphics/ Sound

The cartoony graphics in Village Life are filled with bright colors and exudes a cheerful feeling! The babies in this game in particular are extremely adorable, especially accompanied by the sound of them cooing. The way the game depicts villagers who are in love is rather funny as well – these villagers will be surrounded by hearts and will be swooning over their loved ones in their minds when idle. The game features a catchy tribal music. The music is coupled with amazing sound effects, like the sound of the weather, animal life or even your villagers working. The graphics and sound in this game is really awesome!

Conclusion

In short, Village Life is an excellently-developed village-building/ simulation game that focuses on individual villagers in the game instead of having a sprawling town of meaningless buildings that you cannot relate to. Being a slow-paced game, you’ll need to wait a substantial amount of time for new unlocks in this game as well as for a baby to be born. Of course, you are given to option to speed up all these using gems and thankfully, you can earn some gems for free through various means in the game. The social aspect of the game can be as frustrating as Farmville’s due to placing a lot of emphasis on asking friends for materials that you can have no other way to obtain for free. In spite of that, its overall gameplay of taking care of a village of villagers, fulfilling their needs and making the happy more than compensates its downsides, making it a game that is worth your time! Do give it a go today and, to have a more enjoyable time there, don’t forget to get some of your friends to try the game with you too!
