Gameplay
When it comes to gameplay, Cooking Dash features the usual hectic (bordering on frantic) gameplay of getting Flo to cook and serve her customers’ orders before her customers get frustrated enough with the slow service that they’ll just up and leave.
In this game, you’ll need to prepare the ingredients, cook the food, serve the dish to the correct customer and collect the cash that’s left behind. Similar to other cooking-themed time management games, the objective of the game is to serve as many customers as you can within the time limit. However, interestingly, the game doesn’t require you to sit your customers or take down their orders so you can save some time there.
The customers in Cooking Dash comes in various color, creed and of course, patience levels. Customers will start to lose their patience over time after placing their order, but the rate at which their patience is lost varies between customer type. The elderly in the game are usually more patient and they don’t usually mind if you serve another customer first, while busy customers will lose their patience much quicker. This is a pretty important aspect in the game because the amount of tips you get depends on their patience level. Once the level moves from “green” to “yellow”, “orange” or “red”, you can be certain that the profit you get is lesser than what you could have gotten.
Due to this, it is crucial to learn how to prep your kitchen within the first few seconds of the game once your restaurant opens its doors. Foodstuff that cannot be burnt or overcooked can usually be prepped in advance, such as chopping up stuff or battering food with flour. Once you’ve unlocked the warming station, you can also cook some of the more popular dishes in advance and keep them warm.
However, be warned – if you accidentally burnt a food, you will then need to bin it. A discard penalty will be imposed for every item you throw... that is unless you spend the game’s premium currency to upgrade your compost bin just so you can get a waiver for the penalty.
Aside from upgrading the compost bin, there are tons of other items, mainly food and appliances, in your kitchen that you can improve in this game using the cash you’ve earned by serving your customers. Appliances can be upgraded to increase their speed and capacity as well as reducing the burn rate, while foodstuff can be upgraded to increase the amount of profit it can earn you per sale. You can also invest in getting décor for your restaurant so that your customers will be more willing to wait for their food and pay more in tips, or that you’ll be able to operate longer hours and earn more money.
Not sure which upgrade to get? Don’t worry! The game will offer you a recommended upgrade option which you can decide to follow or not. However, most upgrades require premium currency (gold bars) especially after the first upgrade. Besides buying them using real cash, gold bars can also be earned for free by completing achievements, leveling up, completing 5 stars per episode, linking your game to your Facebook account (1 time offer) or by watching ad videos. New restaurants are also unlocked as you level up.
As you advance through the episodes, you’ll gradually be required to serve additional items (drinks, mainly) as well as combine entrees with main dishes together to form a more complex dish. This can be pretty challenging and really forces you to carefully plan your moves ahead of time. After all, you can queue up multiple actions in this game but you can’t really cancel the actions you’ve queued.
The really unique part in Cooking Dash is the Prep Kitchen which is unlocked at level 6. Here, you can learn and craft new recipes to attract super versions of customers to your kitchen. Like superheroes, they have powers too, such as paying 2x the food they ordered provided that you have the food they want. You don’t even need to provide the ingredients or the coins to prepare these special dishes. All you need is time to wait out the crafting timer and collect your special dishes. You can then use them before entering a game by equipping the dishes in your Active Boosts section. You can have up to 3 Active Boosts at most per level.
By attracting and serving these special customers, you will also gain Fame. If you managed to increase your Fame enough, you may eventually be able to appeal to unique VIP customers who are even more generous with their money.
Like all freemium games, Cooking Dash has an in-game shop that sells premium gold for real cash. These gold bars can then be used to purchase upgrades or to buy premium helpers like the grandma auto-chef. With her on your team, she can help you prep all the ingredients you need instantaneously and upgrade all the prep stations fully. For really tough levels, hiring the services of this super grandma is the easiest way for you to earn all 5 stars available per episode.
There is a crazy ton of episodes for you to play in Cooking Dash as well - more than what you’d usually expect from a casual match-3 game. However, since you need to spend Supplies to play an episode, you won’t be able to burn through all the levels in a day. Of course, if you don’t want to wait for your Supplies to be automatically restocked, you can always spend premium gold to buy more.
Community
Due to its ties to the immensely popular cooking-themed time management game series, Diner Dash, Cooking Dash has already amassed a pretty large following of players. There isn’t a lot of social interactions in between players in the game due to the lack of player-to-player communication. However, if you link your game up with your Facebook account, your friends will then be able to send you free Supplies every day.
Graphics/ Sound
Cooking Dash definitely doesn’t shirk from investing lots of time and effort into making sure that its graphics are top-notch. In terms of sound, the game’s music is really able to get your heart pounding as you rush against time to serve as many customers as you can. The ambient sounds, such as the sound of people cheering and clapping, helps frame the atmosphere that the restaurant you’re managing is actually on a game show.
Conclusion
In short, Cooking Dash is an amazingly fun cooking-themed time management game that has drawn its inspiration from the popular Diner Dash series as well as the other similar freemium on the mobile platform. If you are a fan of Diner Dash or any cooking-themed time management game, you’ll definitely enjoy playing Cooking Dash! Try it today!
